I have both the PS4 and X1 side by side, the ps4 is barely more compact, and the non-built in power supply on the X1 is a one time annoyance, if that (?).

My friends had ps3 and got ps4, the one other guy had an Xbox that had many issues with the ring of death and he recently got a ps4 mainly because of the price. Most people that have the previous generation will get the next one. Probably since they are used to it or already are in the live/psn ecosystem and play with their friends a lot.

makes sense. i had both as well but never got into PSN, it got off to a horrible start while MS already had a stronghold with online multiplayer.

Why is this always said with a bad connotation? As if paying for exclusives is somehow bad? Sony typically prefers to pay to have subsidiaries make their exclusives, Microsoft typically prefers to pay to have 3rd-party developers make their exclusives. It's really no different from a low-level perspective.

There is a difference between "we own the studio" and "We will pay millions just to prevent the competition from getting it at all"

Developers made no secret about the relationship they had with Sony during the PS4 development up to launch. Microsoft can learn something about giving that type of support.

Barely more compact? Hardly...the XB1 huge by comparison.

LOL?

My PS4 is 11" x 12".
My XB1 is 10.5" x 13".

What versions did you guys get? xD

Anyway console size and power brick coming into play in purchasing a console decision = lol

You omitted height. Xbox One is a good two inches high too. Plus doesnt include the enormous power supply. They even went with a full height bluray drive, lol.

See picture in post above mine. The XB1 is huge when compared directly. It's not fanboy anything...it's reality.

I think what no one can figure out is why it matters. If an extra inch ir two keeps you from buying a console that you otherwise want, you have a weird set of priorities.

Cause it was mentioned that it was big then people got defensive and basically called us liars. Proof is right there.

That said there is a reason why someone may prefer a compact box. Especially without the power brick. Depending on the location of a TV, there may be limited space available to place a system. It wasn't a problem for me but it could be a problem for some people.

PS4 is massively smaller than the XB1. I think that's a fair statement.

I personally do not care that much. I have a lot of room and the internal power brick is kind of nice when moving the unit around (I noticed this with the pS3 fat that I have), but not a deal breaker.

Consoles don't shrink over time because people want larger ones or don't care, though; the XB1 V2 will be smaller than this one for sure. The last revision of the PS4 will be the size of a discman

I have never understood why people care so much about the technical or physical specs of a gaming console. At least not the the point where they would berate someone for choosing one console over the other based on differences in technical and physical specifications.

The fact of the matter is that the salient (and arguably the only relevant) feature of a gaming console is the games it will play. Someone could have smallest most powerful gaming machine on earth sitting in his living room, and not be satisfied if it did not play any games he liked. Therefore the games should be the deciding factor of what console is "best" for a given player, not how the console looks or what it is technically capable of doing. And game preference is by definition personal and subjective. Thus, one person's opinion as to what games (and therefore what console) are best for him has not bearing on what games (and what console) are best for someone else.

Sure, higher tech specs are an indicator that one console may be capable of pushing more pixels than another. But the fact that a game is "pretty" does not mean it is necessarily fun. Ryse is proof of that, as are myriad other titles.

Full disclosure - I own the XB1 and will probably buy a PS4 at some point too. Not because I like one console over the other, but because there are exclusives on both machines that I want to eventually play.

Sorry guys, I didn't put my PS4 on top of my X1 during measurements, lol. But you see the measurements are reversed. The X1 is 10.5" deep and the PS4 is 12" deep (I guess that doesn't matter, but the width does?).

Anyway I still think it's a dumb argument, it's not "WAY smaller". It's a couple inches less in width and a couple inches greater in depth! Not sure why it would come into play in which console to purchase, it's not like we're talking about controllers here? If we're talking about portability, the X1 is a hassle if you have to take the kinect everywhere with you.

I don't know if height matters, unless you're just stacking them on top of each other (haha).

Actual measurements:
HxWxD
PS4 is 2" x 11" x 12"
XB1 is 3.5" x 13" x 10.5"

In other news, does anyone know if any directv superfan/NFL supercast type app is coming to X1 anytime soon? Directv cancelled their contract with sony (and the PS3) a while ago (I think) because of their "NFL" integration with the X1, but I have no idea what that means?

Thanks!

I haven't heard of anything other than the already existing NFL app.

Some people may not like that or they may not have room or are too lazy to rearrange things around. But yes it's a stupid reason.

It plays games, get what you prefer to play based on the last gen's game lineup. That's what I tell people who want a console but have no idea what to get. My coworker lives with some roommates and they have a $250 gift card from Verizon and he was asking me what console to get.

I told him about my ps4, the games Sony usually comes out with, asked what he liked to play. He wants to play uncharted and last of us and likes those types of series but in the house they have had nothing but 360's and he was interested in the console that would have better games for all the roommates to play together.

Since they already had live and were comfortable with Xbox I steered him towards the one since that's what they were familiar with. That and he didn't seem to care the ps4 is technically suited with better specs.

The sooner you realize that different people have different preferences, priorities, and tastes the sooner you will be happier. I know people who buy TVs based on the stand and bezel. Even when there are better models that don't cost as much.

yeah because a tv that is the center piece of a room that you will be staring at for hours on end is the same thing as a 10x10x2 box that you sit somewhere in an entertainment rack and could potentially be out of site.

right.

full on retard.

Talk about glass half empty.

Let's take Guerilla Games, for example. Sony didn't create them, they bought them. Do you look at it as Sony buying the developer as spending millions just so the competition can't have any of their games? Doubtful, you gleefully exclaim that Sony owns them and it's completely different than Microsoft buying exclusivity.

Whatever. Both Sony and Microsoft pay millions to get exclusive games, they just happen to have a bit different of a philosophy in how to do it sometimes. Somehow Microsoft is the bad guy in this.

Just cause you don't give a crap when you stick everything behind a wall anyway...ya know. Some people have smallish game rooms. Luckily I'm not in that situation.

Yes because Sony bought the developer outright. In the Titanfall deal, the developer, that is the people actually making the game, had no say until the announcement. I think the guys working on the title deserve a little more respect than that myself.

Gaming would be better if neither Sony nor Microsoft bought off devs.

Getting good titles in the most homes would be the best result for everyone. The money paid by Sony or Microsoft to buy a studio outright, or to legally bribe a studio into 'exclusivity' isn't money that comes from thin air. It's done because they believe they will profit at least enough to make that investment back. How that money comes back is in steering people to their platform with the titles that are now exclusive to the platform.

This isn't like Nintendo working their own IPs, this is just taking third parties that would otherwise make these titles available across every profitable platform and muscling them out.

Imagine a world where Halo, Forza, The Last of Us, Uncharted, etc, were on every viable platform rather than forced to only exist on one system or the other. Better for gamers hands down. And instead of forced artificial exclusives from 3rd parties or devs that got bought out, they could spend that $ instead employing their own people to make great exclusives.

Result? Gamers would have a lot more options on each system, and there would be even MORE great games out there with the money being spent more wisely.

i disagree 100%. i think exclusives drive competition and push things forward.

but i would love to see mario and zelda and metroid on the ps4 and/or xbox 1.

I agree and when you have a developer who solely works on games for one platform, they can do things with it that other studios can't because they have a more intimate knowledge of the system. I dont think last of us would have been as good as a multiplatform title. At least not as well optimized. I just wish there was more direct developer interaction than Activision and ea doing whatever they want.

I hope there are some superstars this gen with self publishing on both consoles. Developers have a chance to prove you dont need a huge publisher to be successful. I just wonder if they can get the proper exposure.
