by "best launch game" i'm talking about best launch game this gen lol not ever. mario 64 is the best launch game ever.

and by "repetitive" i mean it's repetitive how tomb raider is repetitive in it's combat, the last of us is repetitive in it's combat, etc. but it has a lot of variety in scenery as well.

me personally, if killzone is a 74/100, ryse is like 124/100 lol. just so much better and memorable than killzone. i had no desire to finish kz in general, but obviously it's all opinion.

I've given my thoughts on Killzone and I thought it was decent for a shooter and looked good but it had many flaws in the game design that made it annoying to play through the story. Online was totally different and was a welcome change from the Battlefield style for me, but it didn't have enough to keep me interested long term. I feel I got my $20 out of it,

Assassin's Creed is as repetitive as it gets when it comes to combat. Counter, attack, wait for next guy and repeat. Ryse isn't like that at all really, there's a little more variety to how you approach a fight. It may have fewer animations, but it's far less boring to me.

Mario 64 is easily the best launch game ever. This generation has total crap for launch games, but seems like console manufacturer's are setting precedence/copy-catting and "getting away" with it, since N64.

alright man ... whoever the hell gave Ryse bad reviews is smoking some f'ing crack. i just played it for like an hour and a half or so and i do not want to stop playing it. i stopped because i want to show my brother tomorrow the part that i'm at because he is going to flip his lid when he sees this game. this game is one of the most epic games i've ever played. the executions do not get old to me, and the double executions are a site to see too. sure it is repetitive, but the game is just so damn epic and the story is top notch as well. the voice acting is amazing too, as are the graphics and sound. it is like playing 300 meets gladiator. just epic.

seriously if you haven't played this game because of the reviews, give it a chance. my only complaint is that i didn't get it earlier because it is so badass. i traded in killzone at gamestop today for $40 and used it to get this, and do not regret it at all. this is by far (other than killer instinct of course!) the best launch game on either console, by a LONG SHOT!

It'll be interesting how your opinion holds up. The complaints are pretty common... Short campaign, yet still managed to feel repetitive and a bit boring

heh...yeah bring an opinion as fact.

I had more hours of fun with Halo than I did with any mario game in history. I didn't buy an N64 until Ocarina of Time and by then I had played Metal Gear Solid on PS1 which to me set a new bar for a game experience at the time.

I believe a lot of reviewers had their mind made up after the very lackluster E3 showing. But the devs obviously realized how it was received, and made the necessary adjustments.

I finished the game in about eight hours, and like I said before, loved every minute of it. Sure, you can say it's repetitive, but no more than any other hack n' slash game, or FPS, etc.
The epic presentation, the phenomenal voice acting, the excellent story... It makes the entire experience very very enjoyable.

Just goes to show how critical and subjective reviews come to very different conclusions. Most professional critics have to stick to criteria that can be perceived by most people. Unfortunately, "fun factor" is one of the most subjective values yet is often the heart of most critical debates. Michael Bay and Jerry Bruckheimer regularly prove that mainstream consumers will swallow critically foul films as long as they take them on an emotion joyride, and games work the same way. This is how cult classics are formed.

You can take a game like Ryse and come up with a 10 point bulleted, well referenced list of reasons why it is a poor game, but it means nothing to the person who bought into the emotional roller coaster.

I haven't played Ryse yet so I'll withhold my own opinions on its gameplay. That said, I will say that it's perfect possible for a critically poor game to still be a lot of fun and garner well deserved followship. As a launch title, maybe it is getting more attention than it would have otherwise gotten, but that's all the better for the developer who published a solid, if bland (based on reviews) game.

The reviewers who give Ryse and Knack scores lower than those who have played the full game feel they deserve and the same ones who give CoD higher scores than they deserve. That isn't coincidence.

i didn't get a chance to play much yesterday, other than to show it to my friends and brother who were over for football, but all 3 of them were blown away by it. my brother is not a gamer at all but he's always curious about how things look and stuff, and he's big into gladiator and 300, and likes roman stuff, and he was pretty blown away by it. he kept saying to me "are you actually playing this part or is it a video you are just watching?" because the game is just so cinematic in it's presentation and quality.

i do know it's short which sucks though. as far as it being repetitive and boring, it's about as repetitive as any hack/slasher is like god of war, ninja gaiden, etc. it hasn't gotten boring at all in the 2 hours i've played and it's weird because i'm almost holding back playing it for like 3 hours straight, because i don't want it to end so quick. i might actually go back and play it on the hardest difficulty once i finish it. i'm playing it on the hardest difficulty level that is unlocked for now, and it's not too hard so far.

the game is just freaking badass though. like if you are into roman soldier stuff in general, i simply don't see how you would not love this game.

Hit a crazy bug in Dead Rising last night in coop. My friend threw out a bomb that was like a mini nuclear blast, the one that even blows your clothes off. It was next to a building, and after the explosion I was stuck in the wall. I tried to jump out of it and I guess I hit the wrong spot, because I fell under the map to my death. I told my xbox to record it, but I didn't have the chance to go check my clips last night so I hope it recorded right and I can upload it tonight.

From what I've read, it seems Ryse suffers from it's realism in terms of just how epic it is. Like in God of War and the like, there are just complete over the top stuff that adds to the epicness (like fighting a titan), but it says Ryse is pretty realistic in that sense.

I will probably pick it up for cheap, as $60 is a bit much for a single playthrough I'd expect to get.

I hit a bug in Madden twice last night I wish I had recorded. The first one, my QB went to throw the ball (I was playing career as a running back) and it just ejected his hand backwards nearly 70 yards, went out of bounds, and counted as a fumble... 4th and 79. Wtf? I hit a bug against that was similar, except this time the screen just flashed white when he got the ball, said "fumble" and we recovered it on the spot. What? It even showed these exact things in the replay.

That happened to me in DR3. I watched a cutscene for a boss character before the fight started and when I tried to move it crashed back to the dashboard. Only happened one time. Some people seem to think there are memory leaks in the system and that's why it crashes sometimes. I think they are just guessing.

I haven't had any crashes yet, but that is good to know that it crashes to the dash instead of a hard lock up.

So, Ryse or Assassin's Creed IV? I was going to get AC4 but purbeast's opinions have made me consider Ryse. Has anyone played both? I really enjoyed AC2 and it was the first game I finished in a long time but I haven't played any of the other ACs since.

If it were me, I'd pick Ryse. But, I am extremely bias against AC, as the first one was bad enough I've skipped every other. I refuse to buy another after that garbage.

I had heard that too about the first one but I read that AC2 was everything AC1 was supposed to be but never was and IMO it was a great game.

I played ac4 to completion and will say that ac4 has more to do and you can spend many more hours exploring the islands than you grt from ryse, but some of the mechanics of the game are cheap in order to make the game harder. Ryse never feels cheap to me in the same way. I do prefer the combat in ryse by far.

You are missing out. AC has come a long way since AC1. AC4 is the first one since AC1 where I don't think I'll be able complete all of the little stuff. AC1, travel sucked and none of the items showed up on the map if I remember right.

With AC3 I found and did pretty much everything. I have over 30 hours in AC4 with no end in sight. I have Ryse as well but haven't gone too far into it, I started out on a higher difficulty and ended up having to restart and lower it as I just kept getting my ass beat. My coworker finished it in about 8 hours. Anything less then 20 hours and I feel ripped off.

This is why companies are putting artificial difficulty (cheap enemies and poor platforming segments), and stuff designed to extend the time in the game (forcing you to backtrack on foot and do endless fetch quests). I would much prefer a solid 8 hours of no BS gameplay and action vs 20 hours of "go get that key for me from that dungeon you visited at the beginning of the game. Sorry but you have to go on foot the long way around."

The idea that every game has to be so long to completion does affect how some developers design the game.

You're so right. I hate when developers load you up with the same crap or make you backtrack through stuff just to say they have a 20-30 hour story. Give me 8 hours of ballsout fun and I'll be perfectly happy.

It is no different than earlier games. Nintendo hard is just a cute name for games that had invisible walls that killed you in one hit, spots were if you hadn't been there a few times before to memorize the exact patterns were impossible, and other incredibly cheap mechanisms for making their game difficult. Top Gun isn't hard, except the "QTE" landing / refueling is terrible, as the controls don't seem to accept inputs in time to pass it. And then we get some artificially long games because you have to replay certain levels over and over until you run out of lives. All just leftover from the arcade days. Games were meant to suck quarters from you, ask SmashTV.

I really enjoyed AC4, combat is kinda meh but still enjoyable, I did however love the naval stuff.

I am stuck with a lot of the others in that Ryse looks great and I really want to play it as I love a good single player story but $100nzd for a 6 hour game I kinda hard to swallow. I agree with the 40 hours of drawn out nonsense isnt a good thing but even still being done with a game after one afternoon for $100 is kinda rough.
