It makes perfect sense though. The people most likely to do major coding would be older programmers, not some 20 somethings that game all the time. The architects are likely to not be gamers, just good developers.

This is in contrast to what devs have said about the 360, that the people making the OS were in fact gamers and took the user's perspective into account when designing the features and layout. I have no information or proof to back this up but I think the XB1 UI and OS was designed by those who were used to working on an OS for the PC where a mouse cursor and keyboard commands can be used.

No doubt. The original 360 OS was pretty poor though, not to mention slow as ever. I could easily see MS bringing in some PC OS architect heavy hitters to make this OS, and those same people not really understand the overall spirit of the machine.

I would believe that if the first 360 OS was a gamers heaven. It wasn't it took lots of feed back, them taking a couple of chances on some good ideas, and almost a complete overhaul of the UI, before they got it right.

The One as it stands is in a much better position. Sure they were stupid to leave some stuff out. I think the overall UI with some smart tweaking, performance tuning, with some well thought out implementation of missing features and you will have a really good console OS. Better than the 360 one by far.

It's possible given how everything became a disjointed application, which is similar to a PC setup.

The "everything is an app" idea works well for a lot of things. The problem is that some of the most used functions that were stripped out (friends, messages, party chat, etc) shouldn't have been. If they had the message system and friend system integrated in the OS and not an app, I think it would be a much better system.

Does anyone here have the official Xbox One stereo headset? My son is wanting a headset better than the one that came with it and this looks to be pretty good for what it is

I'd wait until we know if the next update fixes the popping issue with the headset adapter that affects some headsets, including the MS branded one.

I never expected MS to sell off the Xbox name, I mean...their other platforms(windows phone) and their OS business isn't setting records at the present time. Xbox is still a big name even if Sony is doing better with the PS4 currently.

shit like this is why analysts are retarded...

“The growth in video games is on tablets and smartphones and the music and video content is already on the move in mobile smartphones and tablets,” Nomura Equity analyst Rick Sherlund said at the time of the Xbox One launch. “Sure, it’s nice to watch this on the big screen too, so we are not saying there is no market for this, just that it is probably not enough to cement Microsoft in the consumer space relative to disintermediating smartphones and tablets.”

so record breaking sales on the new consoles is a sign that console gaming is dying and moving to the phone/tablet market? it's just crazy how out of touch with reality these "analysts" are for the most part.

they sound like the fanboys on this forum (and other forums) who can't grasp the concept that both can exist. it's okay to have a mobile market and a console market. you don't have to be in one camp or the other.

Elop (the person rumored to be sent to head up the Xbox division) was the person who suggested selling it, so that it could run without the MS company pressuring it. It wasn't because it was losing money, but because it was in Xbox's best interest to distance itself form having to cater to the MS company as a whole in their idea and direction.

Who knows what will happen under Spencer though. Spencer was VP of MS Studios though, so he might be well fit for this position.

Nadella is an engineer, not a business guy like Balmer, so perhaps MS will all go back to that way of thinking (for the better, IMO).

MS should be working to boost the Xbox brand and gaming in general not the other way around IMO. Everything MS does from now on should include asking how it will affect the Xbox. Specifically as it pertains to Windows 8.1 and beyond, DirectX 12 and beyond, and Windows phone(since there can be a deep and important integration between the Xbox One and any future consoles and the Windows Phone).

It just seems like there's some pieces in place that could make the whole ecosystem really work between their products.

It does seem rather disjointed that all their systems aren't near fully integrated with each other by now. They have the ecosystem and install base to start it off. Even if they started with Windows 8, Xbox One and Windows Phone 8. It just seems incredibly short sighted that these devices don't interact much better or even have vastly similar navigation.

I read they are makings apps to control TV features as well. Hopefully, the ecosystem will become much less disjointed. Sadly, I've only used my Xbox One for watching TV lately, as I've been busy with Dark Souls 2 and Diablo 3 expansion.

Yeah, the new Smartglass is awesome. I'm in the beta and got set-up yesterday with a Windows 8 tablet. Browsing through the program guide on the tablet is very satisfying.

That sounds incredible! I already use the voice features and being able to look for stuff (and schedule DVR!) from a tablet would just be phenomenal. Now, once they add in media streaming from a server (in the same app, I mean), it will be complete.

Like I said...the pieces are in place. Also Windows Phone OS is now free to use for manufacturers.

All forms of Windows are free for device under 9 inches, meaning things like the Venue Pro 8 and the Miix 2 don't require a licensing fee, though that makes me a bit concerned that devices like the smaller Yogas and the T100 will get shrunk down to skirt the fee on the 10.1-inch devices.

The only thing MS is missing is a time machine to make up for the way late start they needed

Now they just need to make it so that if you buy apps/games on your account, you can access the same things (so long as they are compatible with the device) on another device. Why should I have to buy fruit ninja again on my phone, if I have it on my 360 for example. Streamline that based on the associated account. It will make your consumers more loyal to your product and it's ecosystem.

I believe they already do this with tablet and phones similar to iOS on the iPhone and iPad. I'm sure they won't do it across Xbox One and tablet though. It would be nice if they did, but I don't expect it at all.

Some devs help you out as much as they can. For example, all of the Zen pinball tables I buy on PSN are playable on the Vita, ps3, and ps4. That's as good as you can get because there's no way to jump the gap between everything else. The best I've seen is Portal 2, which if you bought it for ps3 you could activate it on steam for the PC.

I also thought there were games you could buy on the XB-one and have them on your windows phone and/or win 8 tablet. I may be wrong though.

PLEX on the XBOX One? It's plausible given the cross-platform initiative, and you wouldn't hear any complaints from me about it. Although, I already have a HTPC, so it's largely unnecessary, but I'm sure others would like it! It would also help curb the "We want DLNA!" comments.

I think at best they will have a pack that is a couple bux more that gives you access to it on all your devices.
