It will certainly fail in Europe, but that's to be expected. Did you see the 360 numbers outside of the UK? Complete failure. XB1 is more expensive than 360 and being launched against a direct competitor with a better reputation there, combined with features that largely don't matter to those markets (incompatible in many cases actually due to their TV delivery systems, lol). The Xbox titles aren't as popular in Europe either. Ever see what's popular in Germany, France, Italy, Spain? It's far far different than here.
Everyone knows this.
Specs though, people largely don't care. If the difference is large enough visually, people might take notice later on, but for launch timeframe it's all about hype/sentiment/economics.
XB1 may do okay in UK, but is going to bomb like hell in Europe. Same as XB1 should do very well in the US.
Saying XB1 will do well in Europe at large is like saying XB1 will do well in Japan. Not gonna happen.
And people doubted me
2014 sales :
Europe (including UK) XB1 total : 364,755
Europe (including UK) PS4 total : 1,189,893
UK XB1 total : 202,128
UK PS4 total : 313,888
Germany XB1 total : 54,305
Germany PS4 total : 193,206
France XB1 total : 59,107
France PS4 total : 183,663
US XB1 total : 1,038,434
US PS4 total : 1,442,961
So yep, decent numbers in the US, though less than I expected. UK it is doing okayish. Europe it's getting killed. It's widely available as well in 'unofficial' countries like Sweden, and the officially announced 'launch' prices are higher than the importer prices for units already on store shelves in those countries (even for import Kinect bundle vs. 'official' kinectless launch console).
June NPD will be interesting, it appears from store charting that the $399 SKU bumped sales for 2 days before falling like a rock.
All of this is good news for Xbox this holiday though, I get the feeling Sony will get arrogant and stick to $399 barebones, while Microsoft will make a $349 Halo MCC bundle w/12M XBLG. XB1 is not dead by any stretch, although it really has had a rough first year. The first two months saw epic sales to their most loyal fanbase, but from January on it's been news from bad to worse. Will Phil in the driver's seat I'm still interested to see what they do next. At least he changed my mind about XB1 from 'never' to 'maybe'. I will probably still wait for a slim model and a major price cut though, holiday 2015? I babysat one for a little while, and hated basically everything about it. Will still probably get a U before a PS4 though.
Funny enough, I've fired up my OG XBox and am really impressed with how good it is overall, it was a total boss console during that time even though it didn't sell that well.
Phil : Bring back Mechwarrior and I'm in Halo schmalo, no Bungie = I don't care.
