OK, finally getting around to considering a One purchase. I have the original Xbox and the 360 (two in fact), but my friends and I all decided the movement of COD games going futuristic (ahem, silly) killed our willingness to play.
Being a household of means (no kids to share my toys), I was thinking of buying the One, but which one? Previously my paranoia induced state would say, "Fuck NO" Kinect, but now I might reconsider. Also considering their Elite controller even though my original days in FPS was on KBM (and god I miss that).
So, anyone know anything more formal about the M$ announced backwards compatibility and maybe the ability for those on 360's to play same games together with those on One's?
If you have a BC title on the One, I don't see why you wouldn't be able to play online via the 360 emulator. I've honestly just never tried, never had a reason. I guess I could fire up my One, install my 360 copy of
Gears, and test it a bit later.
The console you get is going to be your preference, though. If you go to GameStop, you get a free game and a free controller (the basic black one). If you go to Best Buy, you get a free game and a $50 gift card (if you have GCU, that pays for almost the entire post-tax price of a second game). On top of that, if you're near one of the good Best Buys, they'll let you buy one of the $70 Locke controllers for $30 Saturday afternoon, on top of the other free stuff.
I like the Elite controller, but not to the tune of $150, it's not THAT much of a step up for me. It's also the only bundle that doesn't come with any games. I'd rather get AT LEAST one game with my console than a good controller upgrade. IF you have a friend with a One, you can also use the "Home Xbox" feature to share those free digital titles you get. I'm going to get the
Halo 5 console at Best Buy, then my brother-in-law and I can both play off of the included digital copy.
Also, the only bundle including the Kinect comes with a 500-GB HDD and 3 free games--
Kinect Sports Rivals,
Zoo Tycoon, and
Dark Dreams Don't Die. While the Kinect is convenient, those games all pretty much suck. You can get the bigger HDD and better games (1-3) in other bundles, and I recommend that over the Kinect. If you want the Kinect that badly, it's $100 on its own right now, I think.
If you like
Forza or
Halo, those painted consoles are probably the best options, they're very nice-looking. If not, the
Tomb Raider or Holiday (
Gears Ultimate,
Rare Replay,
Ori) are nice options. The Elite's nice too, but I can't get over the lack of an included game.
