I'm sure it's been mentioned, but this is The ugliest console ever. Looks like a VCR actually.

The one they have been wanting all along, the one where the game industry is modeled after the successful nickel and dime model of the cell phone service industry.

Oh you mean the one where they sell you memory cards and rumble packs?

If they sold memory cards today you would need a unique memory card for every single game... You couldn't use your Rock Band memory card with your CoD memory card. And they would be $100 each and only have 16k.

They were almost that ridiculous on the first Xbox.

I'm almost surprised that with as much crap press they've gotten that they haven't put out any new releases.

How did that start solely with the first Xbox?

The mass adoption of generic 20 year old PC style shooters, the ability to ship now patch later, DLC, the focus on dirt simple cheap to make cookie cutter online VS mode play in small uninspiring levels along with the simultaneous decline of the long immersing single player story, the mainstream adoption of "mature games" and Hollywood game play (read: every game now features the stereotypical 5 o clock shadow billy bad ass one liner "realistic looking" characters with guns and can jump 50 feet through the air) etc.

The original XBox brought some of the worst aspects of PC gaming to the console crowd en masse and made it standard.

I like how they mention a price cut on it at the very end. Now we know the real reason the sales spiked.

I agree, the article is a bit poorly written, and sensationalistic. However, the price cut actually occurred at the beginning of May, and it didn't cause a blip, but XB1 announcement happens, and bam, sales shoot up. Timing is close, but the lack of serious movement in the two+ weeks previous to the XB1 conference tells me that it does mean that a lot of gamers sitting waiting for the XB1 said screw it, I want something new, I'll grab a WiiU to play for a while.

I don't think it necessarily even means those customers won't ALSO buy an XB1 (and/or PS4), just that the backlash against MS is enough to give Nintendo a chance for a while.

I do think, though, that with the unmatchable price of the WiiU this holiday season (we might even see something like $159 for the 8GB model), combined with the legit first-party games starting to hit, that the WiiU might get some traction just in a different market space, similar to how the Wii was profitable at the same time that X360 was successful. The market is pretty large now, it's not like only one company can make everyone happy, and a ton of gamers play on multiple platforms anyway. At one time I had a Wii, PS3, 360, DS, 3DS, and my PC (along with the classic consoles). I've since tossed my 360 back in it's box, given the PS3 away, and mostly play PC and classic consoles. The lady plays the Wii.

Personally, I'll probably look at the WiiU before I look at the XB1, mainly because any game that's on XB1 that I want I can get with a better experience on PC. I can't stand Halo, COD, or Gears, and I'd rather actually play sports or watch real games than play sports titles, so I'm kind of hesitant to drop a ton of cash on the thing. Forza though, I happen to love, so perhaps I'll wait a few years until they're cheap 2nd-hand before grabbing it for that game alone. Similarly, the PS4, I probably only would play GT, Tekken, and Uncharted, none of which I would really replay all that much down the line.

You know, I can't help but laugh every time I see that part of COD where the fish move away from you and they're like "OMG THE AI IS SO GREAT GUYS LOOK AT HOW THE FISH MOVE AWAY".

We did something similar in my Intro to Java class where you calculated if the distance between two objects were less than a parameter you set, then you move away from it. ADVANCED AI!

The Xbox One Misses the Perfect Set-Top Box Target

LAWLS.

I guess we all (or at least me) glossed over this. I had asked earlier if this will work with satellite. Of course it will! Because it's ONLY a pass-through. I know the reveal didn't indicate anything differently, but the way Yusif was pants-stiff over his switching of source I figured SURELY there is something more to this than HDMI pass through, like a proper integration of cable so I can throw my cable box away? My 18 month old $250 Sony receiver does the same damn thing (though not with voice prompt).

So basically you tell your xbox to switch sources (something I can do today with a remote on my receiver) and you still need your cable receiver remote to do things.

Lame lame lame.

As before, I still am optimistic that Xbox is going to be a pretty damn good game machine, so fingers crossed for E3, but all this tv nonsense is just that.

Yes, The Verge did an article on this last week. It's nothing special, it's been done dozens of times, Google TV is the same thing.

I always thought it would still require the cable box and would be basically a pass through with some added functionality within the one as demo'd previously. Did you see something that made you think otherwise until this article came out?

I don't know all the details yet about this new Xbox, nor have I taken the time to read all of this thread. I also know that nothing is totally set in stone yet. Here's the bottom line for me personally though, any of these things happen and I'm out:

1. If the used game market is destroyed and I have to pay $60 for every game(or whatever the new price for games is for the next generation), I'm out.

2. If I have to pay a fee to activate a game that I either borrow from a friend, or rented...after already paying the rental company or buying off Amazon, I'm out.

I love Steam, why? They basically have the same system, but I spend a whole lot less on a per game basis. So if MS wants to drop the prices of new games that you download from Live, run specials all the time, weekend sales like Steam does...I'll deal with numbers 1&2. But they won't. Everything will be the new price for months upon years.

That's why I'll be out. If I buy anything I'll buy a PS4, but probably not for a couple years until they get the kinks out.

The mass adoption of generic 20 year old PC style shooters

You mean the same shooters that all the PC boys complain that are not as good as the old 20 year old games? How many times do we have to look at Quake 2 vs COD layout maps for comparisons to point out why modern day shooters suck?

the ability to ship now patch later

Well it sure beats the old NES days where bugged games stayed bugged, from control issues, graphical or gameplay bugs, they either caused frustration that required us to work around it or made it impossible to realistically finish the game. I even have quite a few PSX/3DO games that I wish had patches for them.
Despite the obvious of todays games being so much more complicated in an ever increasing higher budget risk business with the same time limits to release makes for patches to be a requirement for consoles.
The release of the first Xbox had nothing to do with it.

I saw nothing. I hoped/assumed that given how much damn attention they spent on it that they were advertising something more than HDMI pass through and tacit within the huge amount of time the dude spent showing how it can change sources was something as essential as DVR, even though he didn't indicate there was.

============

One huge positive of consoles is that they have made gaming so much more popular that budgets have exploded. I remember the attention Quake II got because trent reznor did some music for it, but a budget on music like that is a given on a triple A title now, the amount of voice acting is way more than it was in the past, and the depth of games is often better as well.
