I can't remember how everything played out after the Sony unveiling (sans hardware) but I don't remember it being this negative. I haven't heard a lot of positive praise just a lot of negativity. I'm thinking these companies would be better served avoiding these teaser presentations in the future.

IGN is reporting that it is announced that indie developers cannot self publish their titles on xboxone. Sony already announced in Feb that they are allowing self publish.

http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/05/22/indie-devs-cant-self-publish-on-xbox-one
This could turn in to a big deal. I know there are people that don't play any arcade games on their Xbox, and they are missing out on some awesome games. If this is true, it will drive a lot of indie developers away from MS and towards Sony.

You are going to likely need to log into XBL to activate games on every console you play them on. It appears game publishers will have some control over the online v. offline so that could indeed be all over the place. I am thinking more privileges/features/versatility is going to come with a gold sub. Kind of a strong arm tactic to get you to pony up for it. I am thinking people who do not pay the extor... I mean fee, will get boned.

I should add more so than the current iteration does.

which for me is fine... i dont mind paying for the gold..... i get it for 35 bucks a year now.... it wont go above 60 a year IMo

Beyond used games, what will this tying of retail games to accounts do to rentals? Will rentals disappear? Will there be separate pressings of rental discs that don't have this limitation? How would MS control a rental out in the wild and prevent it from being loaded and played by unlimited numbers of people?

I could see special rental copies. There are some rental blu ray movies that dont include the special features.

What do we even really know as fact in regards to the used game scheme here?

Q: Will Xbox One allow players to trade in, purchase and play pre-owned games?
A: We are designing Xbox One to enable customers to trade in and resell games. We’ll have more details to share later.

that is all we know as fact as of now.

Yeah I think it's probable they're going to do something new, something we probably won't like relative to today's setup, but I don't think it's going to totally crash the used game market. If I had to bet I'd say it will be a required activation fee, say $5 or so, for used games. Kind of like some sports games today where you have to pay to play online if you don't have the free code that came with the original new copy.

MS is really dodging questions....

It feels kind of fishy. I'd wish they would just come out and say whats up, unless they are still working it out themselves.

I just clicked on that thread for the first time... some of the posts seem rather prophetic now, eh? I'll bet you guys were on to something with the more cynical responses.

Goodbye season pass that only impacted online play. Hello new fee that impacts everything.

If there is a fee, one thing to remember. You have to pay a fee to access the online portion of your game (gold) and you have to pay a fee to access the single player portion of a game (used). That's crazy.

I can't see the image at work, so I guess I will have to remember what page this is on so I can see it tonight.

heh i'm a developer dude, and what you are mentioning really has nothing to do with developing. sure you can use a random key generator as a developer and put that in code, but to have it actually happen AT PRESSING TIME is not how these things work. so it is a lot more complicated than you think, since no other optical media (to my knowledge) does this. it would require totally new mechanisms in pressing factories to make 10 million different copies of cod:ghosts.

according to the ms faq, they DO require an internet connection.

http://news.xbox.com/2013/05/qa

first question on the list.

I am a developer as well, but I have no dealt with pressing facilities. I would assume, they just have the image of the master on a computer and it burns that master onto an infinite amount of discs. Now, how hard exactly, would it be to change a single bit and just use the md5 hash? Say, you have an extra "fluff" of a few hundred bits tailed to the end just for this purpose. Would it be that hard to alter a single one and convert that to an img file?
Yes, we are thinking about a "feature" that would require certain infrastructure changes at pressing facilities, but for the most part, that is just in the software side.

Also, the first question does not address whether or not it NEEDs and internet connection, just that if you have one and it is lost, you can continue to play.

i dunno, it says " No, it does not have to be always connected, but Xbox One does require a connection to the Internet."

to me requires == needs.

Sounds like it needs one at first to check to make sure everything is in line then after that you don't need one

I would hope they do the Steam model of validating the game once and then not requiring the internet.

But that would put used games in the air

All the guys who made Xbox 360 a huge success left and it shows. With Xbox 1 (not to be confused with One) they were out to nickle and dime you for everything. They relaxed on Xbox 360 (got a little worse over time) but seems that model is back. Things are looking up for the PS4, doesn't hurt that it just may be a more powerful system on top of that.

Sorry, I misread that then. I skipped that part. Guess it does need one. But, seeing as how I live in at least moderately populated part of a developed country, having internet is not a huge problem for me.
