so what happens if you don't have your x1 online for a period of a week or two? what if you take it on vacation and don't have internet? does that mean that it won't turn on and let me play games after the first day?

if shit like this is really happening with this console, i may skip on it pretty much due to principal. this direction that it seems to be going is just a way that is totally inconvenient and gives me less and less control.

i don't want to have to...

1. install a 50gb game that can take who knows how long, before i can even play it.
2. enter a 25 digit code before i can play a new game.
3. have to worry about the console "being connected" in order for it to even work.

i don't want my console to be a pc. i like the simplicity of a console over a pc, which is a major reason i play console games over pc games.

also not being able to rent games from redbox and blow through them in a couple days... yeah, all of this is really going to play a much larger role in my decision to purchase this console than i had initially thought. before the conference yesterday i was 100% going to get this day 1. now i'm totally up in the air and need to wait for more information before i decide.
This is what Phil originally said:
Kotaku: If I’m playing a single player game, do I have to be online at least once per hour or something like that? Or can I go weeks and weeks?

Harrison: I believe it’s 24 hours.

Kotaku: I’d have to connect online once every day.

Harrison: Correct.
http://kotaku.com/xbox-one-does-require-internet-connection-cant-play-o-509164109

Of course Microsoft is now saying this is a "potential" scenario but the fact that Phil actually released this type of information to media makes it clear they are strongly considering this.

Supposedly the USB3 ports will allow you to hookup an external hard drive and use it "for everything you can use the internal hard drive for".
So I will have to buy the console, possibly a headset if that rumor is true, pay for xbox live, and then eventually buy an external hard drive?

2 and 3 there is no clear answer on yet. But 1 supposedly the games would still start up and run off the disc and rather than a "install" ruitine like on a windows disc, what is on the HD is basically a disc "iso". Meaning it can play off the disc and during downtime while content is no longer being loaded it will be busy copying the disc to the HD.

so so so stupid if this is true.

even my phone, which is used "online" for 99.9% of the functionality i use it for, will do the non-online stuff no matter how long it is "offline". i can still play angry birds on my phone when i'm taking a shit on vacation in aruba for a week. it woulda sucked if i went to use it and its like "SORRY YOU HAVENT ACTIVATED YOUR PHONE IN 24 HOURS PLEASE SHIT IN BOREDOM".

Or manage space better. Yes if you are really against clearing that 5 year old game you no longer play you will want to buy an external HD of your choosing which would be compared to the previous X-box a 4th the cost of buying a Microsoft hard drive kit.

When ever have you "had" to buy Live? I don't see how that would change here. It's been this way for nearly 10 years now.

Also what is the rumor on the headset. Must have missed that.

They actually talked about being able to play while it installs in the background. I'd have to search to find it, but I do remember this.

And we don't know the extent of what online connectivity will be required. More will be released, but until then every can cry the sky is falling in this thread.

I just don't know where to go with these rumors and what we've heard. I mean, in the grand scheme of things, the once a day internet check isn't the end of the world because my internet is usually one all the time. I would never take my console on vacation with me, so that doesn't bother me. I never buy a used game and rarely lend games out to friends, so all the limitations don't really effect me.

Well, the headset is a rumor, and I don't recall what the "accessory port" in the controller looked like. If it was just a 3.5mm input jack, any headset will work.

Also, the base 360 model did not come with a headset either.

Well, I play online with friends and use netflix and amazon, so I am pretty sure that I have to buy it if I want to use my console.

A lot of these rumors come from Microsoft execs who say things in an interview when asked a direct question. Pretty much tells me that they aren't rumors. Otherwise...why comment on it at all?

Looking at images on Google, it is not a standard head set hook up on the bottom of the controller, but I have no idea what kind of connection it is.

It comes with a Kinect right? That should remove the need for a headset altogether unless you have specific requirements. Which might be the case for you, but talking to a friend or group in a game should be available out of the box regardless of Sku.

I know it has a mini USB connection (similar to that one a PS3 controller) but there was another, I just don't recall exactly what it looked like.

I usually buy all platforms, but it really is looking grim for the One.

Kinect does require to be connected to Xbox One in all cases, yes

I find that creepy as hell. I don't want constant audio and video feed of my livingroom being uploaded.

Kotaku: If I’m playing a single player game, do I have to be online at least once per hour or something like that? Or can I go weeks and weeks?

Extremely limiting and kind of defeats the purpose of a plug-and-play console.

Also all this crap about TV...I don't even have cable.

What exclusives would the One have anyway? The 360 didn't have anything except Halo, which was mostly underwhelming and peaked on the original Xbox.

Do you talk to people now that have Kinect? It is horrible. It picks up all the ambient noise in the room. I don't want that crap, I just want a regular headset.

That is true. I didn't have a problem with it, others were complaining though. I'd prefer a headset so I can separate voice chat and game sound, but that is just personal preference.

people are going to HATE playing games with me online if it uses the kinect mic as the voice input. i like my shit loud when i game. i'm going to be "that guy" who constantly has a buncha racket going on in the background.

i also HATE hearing voices from xbox live come out through speakers and cut off in-game sound.

i would much rather prefer a headset.

It could be anything. To Arcade games, to kinect software, to timed exclusives they paid some studio to withhold from PS4. Who knows. Though given the track record on the 360 I am not really hopeful on this point. Like you said they had a couple exclusives, most notably Halo (perhaps Forza if you're into that).

This is rather ignorant. There were quite a few quality exclusives for the 360.

And I can confirm the pictures of the controller show a mini USB port. I would assume a mic would plug into that, if it is not wireless.
