Yep...this is my thoughts. Video is optional on skype.

So again. I still don't need Kinect even to do something that I would never do as I have a cell phone to do something. Amazing, isn't it.

The whole NSA thing is getting more believable by the minute

Meh...they just wanna try to force usage of it in games to offer some differentiation between PC/XB1/PS4. "oh look this game is on every system but only on XB1 can you use kinect to do this..." Same game...just an added gimmick to try to offer a perception of extra value.

I don't care for it, I'd rather not have it but in the event I do get an XB1 which I very likely will now, I will promptly stash the Kinect down behind stuff out of the way.

I didn't think there was a way to turn it on w/o the Kinect?

But go ahead and think of ONE THING, ONE THING that Kinect does today or can do in the future that I can't do alternatively with the controller. Go ahead.

-Video chat in game
-Scanning in your face to use as texture on a model
-Sharing anything visual in games (like maybe a hand drawn map in a online rpg room)
-Motion and gesture control
-Motion capture what you are doing like and use it to animate character in game- EG record a custom emote, etc.
-Play air guiter and have it pick out the cords you are playing and what strings you strum
-Have physical CCG cards used in game and follow their play (I know ps3 did this with the eye.)
-Have CMG models bring in virtual assets (like skylanders)
-Dance games that really see how you match vs the template
-FPS games that use lean control, view and stance control like a trackIR unit.

etc, etc.

There are a ton of uses just for the camera portion, let alone the motion portion. Maybe you don't find them valuable, but it's not like you can replicate it with a controller and even things that can someone be duplicated aren't qualitatively the same.

This is a win for consumer rights.

I think MS was going to ride it out despite all the negativity with the gamers, but when Sony was able to walk all over them without having to do anything then the mainstream press started picking up on it, and then with preorders lagging they had to step back and rethink their strategy. They are only doing it because it was going to hurt their wallet.

I am happy about this. It shows that people can make a difference and even the biggest companies need to listen even if they don't want too. I still have negative feelings about the situation but it is mixed with positive and some hope. On the negative side, we've seen MS's hand now and what they want to do and will move too, on the positive it shows that they will bend to consumers. The hope is that they learn from this and when next gen (X2) is coming out their policies are consumer friendly and they don't try and pull some kind of stunts like they did in the past couple of months.

They still have other issues they will have to contend with, but they at least removed 2 major ones. While I can not say I will purchase an X1, I can say there is at least a chance I would purchase one now whereas before there was not a chance of ever owning one. If you are curious my main reasons for not purchasing one are there are not MS exclusives I care about currently, Kinect, *if* Live Gold is still plastered with ads (if it is like it has been, ugh, I don't like paying for a service and getting ads that take up so much space, but that is another topic all together), and being burned on the 360 (RROD). The last one is the easiest to resolve and will find out over time if they turn that around.

This is good though. We need competition and the way it was looking this was going to be a good old fashion slaughter and no one wins when the one on top doesn't have to fight to keep it.

what's to stop microsoft from going back to the original plan 2 years from now?

Absolutely nothing. Lock people in then...although I hope this doesn't happen. If it did there would be a ton of people buying new PS4s at that time lol

Pardon my interruption

Does the XBOX1 have DVR capabilities when watching their cable services? It looks like they are trying to be a substitute/replacement for cable & satellite services.

also

MS also said that they will be removing the "Microsoft points" and change it to real life money.
I just bought 3x 1600 points and a 12month gold subscription for my xbox360 and will I be redeem those points on Xbox1?

Also one more thing, since I'm in Canada, Will I be IP blocked from watching their Hulu or Huluplus and cable services they are providing?

The Xbox360 blocks me already so I'm assuming they will be, but I'm crossing my fingers that they wont

I hope somebody came across these questions and saw their answers

Massive anti trust and consumer lock in lawsuits when people don't have the choice to sell their investment and jump ship to a competitor if suddenly their games were worth nothing because MS did a bait and switch.

I'm sort of a little bummed that they did an about face on the DRM policy. I liked the whole family sharing thing as most of my family lives 600-900 miles away. The only bad thing is I doubt any of them are going to pay $500 for a X1.

EDIT:

There is no DVR component. The X1 has a HDMI input port, which will connect to your cable/satellite box's HDMI output port. The X1 will then display the feed from the box accordingly. Controlling the box through the X1 will be performed through HDMI-CEC (i.e. sending commands over the HDMI cable) or through an included IR device that will send the proper remote codes. Not all cable/satellite boxes support HDMI-CEC, so if it does not, the latter will be required.

MS also said that they will be removing the "Microsoft points" and change it to real life money.

Yes, you can use them. All MS Points will be converted to the new dollar amounts, but all converted dollars will expire after I think a year. Any dollars added after the switch will not expire. XBOX Live Gold subscriptions should remain as they are now.

Since you can't now, you probably won't be able to with the X1 either.

Speculation- They are trying to position the xb1 as a IPTV DVR at some point. Right now though its like a fancy google TV. Guide, etc. They would really need a new model with a cable card slot if they really wanted to take on a legacy TV dvr role.

I know the subs carry over to gold. I'm sure you point will just get converted to your local currency( speculation)

No idea on the IP blocking. I suspect that's a licencing issue.

I can't speak to region locking as I haven't heard anything about what services will and will not work outside the US.

For points they now equate to real money. 1600 points is $24.80 canadian dollars now. You can use the same Xbox Live gold membership on both the 360 and XBox One. All your redeemed currency will be available on that account.

The xbox one is not a DVR like your cable box has. It can work as a game dvr that can record live gameplay and upload it etc. Supposedly they are working with certain providers to allow this functionality but I'm not confident it'll work. The major cable and satellite companies want to continue to charge for their leased equipment and would prefer you not to own anything.

It doesn't have the hardware to work without a set top box from a provider right now. Unless you're thinking of access to their ondemand network, or something net a IP based DVR where the recording is on their end.

I can use my Xbox 360 as a Set Top Box w/Uverse without the need of a set top box

I wonder if they are going to reverse on the 'only one XBL gold account per console required' now that the family sharing plan is dead. Thats why they quit selling the XBL family packs earlier this year.

No I mean like a stand alone tivo box worked before.

Think of the chain like this... RG-6 to cable box > HDMI to XB1 > HDMI to Receiver/TV. What I read they want to be able to offer is the ability for the XB1 to record TV from the cable box, and offer full DVR services. You will still need the box though, but it would offer the proper interface to allow recording of live TV.

Since most cable and satellite providers charge extra for DVR service and a rental fee for the actual DVR box, they would be hesitant to give up control to a 3rd party.

Ideally they'd push TV through RJ-45 cables and you'd just use the XB1. I'm not sure how each TV service works though. I'm really only familiar with Dish/DirecTV/Comcast

From what I have heard once the major cable companies start rolling out nationwide IPTV you will be able to stream your entire channel lineup to the X-Bone, much like Comcast has their On-Demand portfolio streamable to the 360 now. This is why MS has been in negotiations with the cable companies about subsidizing it. It's certanly possible that they may let you record the IPTV stream to the X-Bone hard drive...
