So, is Kinect voice chat always on and working, assuming I didn't uncheck the option in settings?

In COD, I can see those with voice chat enabled have a microphone icon next to their gamertag in the players lists, but I never see one next to mine. Or are those just users with a lot of background noise and/or didn't calibrate their kinect well and/or are heavy mouth-breathers?

Just wondering cause I just noticed last night I've been hearing other player's reactions to my kills sometimes (if I'm close...I think?), and am now wondering if my rude, frustrated blurbs have been getting through to others...

Mine is off and I don't remember if that was the default. I think it was.

My wife found one at a Wal-Mart a couple days ago. She hit four of them in a 60 mile trip on her way home from a business meeting. I've been told it's off limits until Christmas.

That's just cruel.

So, I went and updated both consoles last night, and after everyone kept talking about the elusive device control features, I decided to try and find them. I guess I assumed they would be in the same section as the X1's power settings (i.e. Instant On, etc.), but they're under TV & Devices or something like that. Since it requires you to enter your brand, I'm guessing it uses IR instead of HDMI-CEC like the PS4 uses?

Yes, I'm pretty sure the Kinect blasts the room with the IR signal since it isn't directly facing the components.

I have to say my xbox one is truly an amazing device.

Being able to seamlessly switch between gaming, tv, apps, and music is something no other device can do as well as the X1. Using kinect vs hunting for a remote makes the experience truly revolutionary.

Does it work 100% of the time? Nope. Kinect has a ways to go to achieve near perfect accuracy, but if this is version 1.0 I can't wait to see what the future holds. Microsoft bet big this generation and it's looking like their vision is the way of the future. I don't want another hockey luck sized streaming device that can only do a handful of things. I want one device that does everything, and the X1 is truly in a class of its own.

Early adopters be warned, the system has bugs. But once you live with the x1 for a few days you'll wonder how you ever lived without this integration. It's worth the asking price.

The XB1 is ok but most of the crap they expect it to do, it does half assed(no dolby digital support at all, party chat is broken and it adjusts the game volume without asking, the voice commands only work half the time). It's not seamless, not even close. Apps make the OS feel disjointed. Things that should be at the core of the OS are put into an app that doesn't even work as well as the 360 did. It's got some good games and some of the stuff it does is neat in a "hey watch this" kind of way. It's far from the wonder box you make it out to be.

It's fine to like it, I like it. It's just that there are things it doesn't do that should not be overlooked. On the PS4 for example the party chat works properly on it from day one, it streams twitch and ustream from day one, supports dolby digital from day one, can record more than 5 minutes of gameplay on the gamedvr from day one. All things I cannot do on the XB1.

You seem not satisified with PS4 nor the XBOX One, according to all your previous posts. Why do you waste your time in Console forums if you have a massive PC to play games?

Cause I play games on console. Oh no...I have a good PC therefore I cannot play Consoles at all...

That tired old argument is lame. Most of the people posting here who have one or both of these have a PC, some of them better than mine. What's the big deal?

Both consoles were rushed, and I call it like I see it. You can look back a few pages and see a bunch of things that are just done stupidly and screwed up on the XB1. You can see the same stuff over on the PS4 thread if you care to look. It's not just me saying it either. I HAVE said multiple times I do not regret either purchase and have gotten multiple hours of enjoyment out of them both. I don't know what you were reading, but I've always said they are both good and I like them both. I am not going to overlook things that I feel were either failures or can be made better though. Lets be clear on one thing, you can like something a lot but still criticize it.

Completely agreed.

How is the TV deal going? I've seen reports of very reduced picture quality and eliminated surround sound. Are those still issues? Any one using it with DirecTV, the Genie in particular?
I am using it with DirecTV Genie, but I don't really use the TV functions on the One, basically it just passes through. I have on occasion used the Kinect to pause TV (i.e. I'm in the kitchen and have Sportscenter on in the background, and don't want to miss something) which is pretty cool, but I've only done that a few times.

I don't notice any picture degradation at all. I'm not some elite videophile, so it's possible others might notice what I don't.
I do notice that I have to turn my receiver up about 20% more than without the One. Not that it's a big deal.

On some boxes that happens which is why surround is in beta. I use Comcast and have good PQ and surround works. I can't tell a difference on my TV. Most channels use heavy compression, even on HD broadcasts so the quality is not very high. Very soft is how I'd describe most channels. There's only a few that really show any kind of clarity that rivals OTA.

Can the xbox one control tv if you do not have an hd box? I'm thinking of getting my little brother one for Xmas. He has ps3 now and hasn't said anything about a new system.

My mother doesn't have hd boxes just regular cable. I figure it would be a way for me too to play exclusives for xbox since I already have a ps4. I visit there often so it would be interesting.

Although I'm sure most of his friends have ps3 and he spends a lot of time playing cod and fifa online with them so I'm not sure if it would be something he would enjoy more than me lol.

It uses HDMI to find your box. If you try watching TV without a cable box plugged in it will tell you it can't find your cable box. At most it will be able to mute your TV and turn it on and off.

boomhower, and others, asked about TV surround sound...

Xbox.com said:
Digital surround with TV on Xbox One

Support for digital surround sound from your cable or satellite box is currently available as a beta. By default, only stereo sound will be received.

Follow these steps to enable digital surround sound:

From Home, say “Xbox, go to Settings” or select the Settings tile from My games & apps.
Select TV & OneGuide.
Select Troubleshooting.
Select the Surround Sound (BETA) option.

Note: Your Xbox One can produce digital surround sound for games and Blu-ray or DVD movies. Only the digital audio pass-through from your cable or satellite box is in beta.

And it's been working great for me.

Works great for me too. There are apparently some boxes that the xb1 has issues communicating with and they only output stereo. I have seen reports on other forums about it but they were on networks other than Comcast and uverse. They did not specify the box type.

For BF4 players there is supposed to be an update for the xb1 version today.

This is pretty much my experience except for two things: I don't have the genie, but an older HD-DVR box, also I find the Xbox One amplifies my sound so that I have turn my sound down, not up. The sound, I believe, is due to the surround sound "beta" that I have turned on, though.

My favorite thing about the Xbox One is the HDMI pass-thru. I know switching inputs on my TV and audio receiver wasn't that big of a deal, but being able to switch instantly between TV and games is freaking awesome. Having notifications pop up while I'm watching is freaking awesome. Having to turn on just the Xbox One and it turn on my TV and receiver is freaking awesome. I feel like if I ever get a PS4, switching to get to it is going to feel antiquated.

While I have my DirecTV box running through the One, I don't really use the guide much. I still use my DirecTV remote to switch channels and adjust volume on the receiver. When I have used the guide just to mess around, it's worked perfectly fine. It changes the channel, pauses, etc. using IR. The only time it fails is when the DirecTV box doesn't respond, the model I have is notoriously slow, the remote even fails to register sometimes.

I feel like I'll use the One guide more if I ever decide to go through and set my favorite channels. That and the fact that guide is much more responsive that on my DirecTV box, those are what may get me to switch eventually. The One guide's biggest problem right now is that it shows every single channel that DirecTV offers, while my actual DirecTV box hides stuff I don't pay for. This is where setting up my favorites would fix this.

In my opinion, the Xbox One doesn't reinvent TV, it just makes it insanely more convenient to switch between TV, Netflix, games, IE, etc.

Best way to say it in my mind instead of making TV it's own service they literally made it an app.

For what MS wanted to accomplish they pulled it off for me. I don't always play games every day. But my PS4 stays in standby and my Xbone is on every day.

I have the option to hide SD channels if there is an HD version. That is the best thing about the one guide to me.

It is funny going back and watching things like football in SD. How could we even make out what was happening back then?

So, numbers are coming out and it looks like the PS4 is winning the console wars with 2.1 million units sold, followed up closely by the Xbox One with 2 million units sold. 4 million in less than a month. Clearly, iOS and Android are killing console gaming!

you mean clearly wii-u is the #1 "next gen" console!

in regards to the SD, back in the day, i don't know about you guys, but i wasn't watching tv on 60" screens. my dads "big screen" tv was a 36" tv lol. sd didn't look too bad on that back in the day.

Plus the technology of CRT didn't allow for the same color depth and clarity. The flaws were hidden behind dim tube screens and muted colors.

Better quality TVs mean more obvious flaws in the picture.
