MS and Sony don't do backwards compatibility to "force" new console purchases... They don't do it because it is a feature that would limit the new console's power.
I'm not even sure it's because of that, I feel like it's more because they realize that after a year, nobody even cares about it anymore. They then have that extra cost in a market that is increasingly sensitive to price. You always hear a couple of cries about lack of backwards compatibility, but how many people outside of the hardcore gamer even use it if available?
