MS and Sony don't do backwards compatibility to "force" new console purchases... They don't do it because it is a feature that would limit the new console's power.

I'm not even sure it's because of that, I feel like it's more because they realize that after a year, nobody even cares about it anymore. They then have that extra cost in a market that is increasingly sensitive to price. You always hear a couple of cries about lack of backwards compatibility, but how many people outside of the hardcore gamer even use it if available?

If the PS4 had PS3 backwards compatibility I would have bought one at launch, instead of waiting at least a year like I'm doing now.

Honestly, this. If the PS4 had BC, I would have kept it rather than sell for a quick buck. My 360 isn't hooked up anymore, but my PS3 still is. And, honestly, it is likely the best game in 2014 just launched on last gen systems (Dark Souls 2).

That's your opinion but I would bet other games this year get more praise from the community at large. Dark Souls is a love it or hate it thing. It lacks the broad appeal of some other games and it is pretty early to make that claim yet.

The only game I will be playing on a ps3 anytime in the future is persona 5.

Oh, of course it is only my opinion. And, unless FROM did something terrible with Dark Souls 2 (and from what I've heard, they didn't) this will be good. Even if it is only as good as Dark Souls, it will still be miles ahead (again, in my opinion) than 99% of games released.

There isn't a single game announced that has me more anticipating it's release.

I agree it isn't something that has mass appeal, however, I don't think it will get less praise than most other games. In fact, if you look at Dark Souls as an example, I think the community is fairly positive. Unlike something like COD where there is a lot of internet hate. It is helped by the fact that a lot of people avoid the game, due to the 'uniqueness' of it.

Backward compatibility is a pipe dream. Consoles are too powerful now to emulate in software, too expensive to provide the old hardware on board (see PS3 launch price disaster), and it would limit the new system too much building it around the existing architecture (see GameCube -> Wii -> Wii U).

These aren't 7 MHz 8 bit CPUs being emulated on a 1+ GHz PC anymore.

And it sucks anyway. Even PS2 couldn't play PS1 games correctly sometimes (FF7 and Xenogears were full of glitches and slow down issues on PS2.

And if that's not enough, this is the age of virtual consoles and digital content and selling you your games over and over again, so on top of all the real technical reasons there is now a financial incentive not to do it.

I didn't get a lot of time (maybe an hour) to play Dark Souls a week or so ago, and I can say that the general style of game it is won't be something that I'll call GotY. I'm still banking on The Division as my early GotY choice.

That is strange... on a side note, I personally don't see Watch Dogs selling well. The game doesn't seem like a good game, the whole hacking concept just seems silly. I really hope I'm wrong though, I was on the edge of my seat when I first saw it.

What? Have you even followed this game at all? The number of ways to approach a mission is incredible.

Like I said in the other thread, if it gets a decent sale on PC I may pick it up to give it a try myself. Even though I kind of hated some of the mechanics of the first title, I am interested to see how they changed things for the sequel and I am not against trying games just for the sake of giving them a try. If I hate I hate it but at least I may have actual reasons to hold an opinion.

Well maybe it won't sell so well now that there is 100 page threads on neogaf about how ubi revealed it running on super awesome graphics at e3 before the sonsole specs were announced and just recently revealed a trailer that doesn't look close to that saying it releases may 27th.

People were expecting it to look like that on ps4 but the new trailer is the only footage we have except for the late night gameplay on Jimmy Fallon which showed him using a ps4 controller but it was actually running on a pc.

Anyway the game is good and it's like gta but with a different style of gameplay, you can darken the whole city, hack and follow people. Your friends can make their way into your sp game if you have the online option turned on in the sp section of the game and basically hack your phone to get info from you, so on. You can also do the same or disable that option.

I think it will be a good game.

If its anywhere near as good as System Shock 2 or Deus Ex in the hacking and many ways to do something department...

Im keeping a close eye on it from the lens of original Deus Ex. Has that same cyber punk espionage vibe to it. That game took me three times longer than necessary covering every square cm and hacking and lock picking everything.

Has anyone tried the game audio output from the controller? How is it compared to just running chat audio from it and game audio from your receiver? I can do it either way but was wondering if someone has already tried it. XBL is currently down too so I can't play any games to try it...not even ones for which I have a disk.

edit: I think I sort of answered my own question. Didn't do chat but did manage to do Killer Instinct offline. The audio from my receiver and from the controller is the same. The only difference is that with my receiver it can get louder. With my Sennheiser PC360s the controller doesn't output enough volume for my tastes, so going through the receiver remedies this. I imagine it depends on what headset is used. Although I think when you mix in voice chat you wouldn't want the game audio to be overpowering to the point you can't hear either, there's an option on the adapter to adjust the mix. Gonna have to play with it more but for now with XBL down I can't do anything except watch tv.

When I get a new console I am done ith the previous gen, I dont ever go back

Same here. Don't think I've replayed a game since I was little and didn't have a choice because nothing new was coming until birthday/Christmas etc.

XB1 Promotional Price drop to $399 for Titanfall bundle :

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=783363

Sadly, it's expired now, but I have to wonder if they were testing the popularity of such an option. Given the value in having more consoles in the hands of gamers (particularly early on to gain marketshare %), I think it would be an awesome move that could really push XB1 to a strong position this year.

We should see a price cut at E3 (or at the VERY latest, November, but I think that would be a mistake). I'm thinking $449 w/bundles, maybe $399 base.

Yea that $399 would be a great price for them to pull in a sale, especially with a game where ps4 does not have games bundled for that total price.

Yep, specs be damned, hitting $399 with a game would be a game changer for sure if done early enough.

The reason I don't think they should wait is the mindshare and social media component. When a significant % of a gamer's group of friends start with PS+ and PS4, it's harder to make the sale of an XB1 down the line. The same was true with XBL and 360, the early lead in the US was insurmountable for PS3 even as they globally took over during the gen.

There were a certain number of extreme xbox fans and people with large amounts of discretionary income that didn't balk at $499 for the weaker console. But those people aren't infinite. If the weekly sales fall back to the gapped level again after 2-3 weeks of Titanfall boost, then the price drop will be here sooner than we think. The price drop that all the trolls were saying was not going to happen before 2015

Microsoft Plans to be 'Direct and Honest' With Fans

What a novel concept.

Microsoft Game Studios vice president Phil Spencer said that Microsoft could have done a better job handling information regarding the Xbox One last summer, following the console's reveal.
Noooooo! Really? A more accurate reflection would be "I'm not sure MS could have done a worse job handling information regarding the Xbox One last summer."

Yep, saw that. Also this :

A part of me could be purely cynical, but I choose not to be. A lot of my issues with the XB1 came down to their philosophy and what they were trying to do with the industry, but I think they're moving admirably fast to try to fix their relationship with the gamers that they disappointed with the reveal and all that jazz (no sense rehashing it all now). I look forward to seeing 2014 and 2015 for sure, and although many regions are basically a lost cause, there's no reason that US+UK can't be a super vibrant XB1 stronghold that sees a whole lot of very happy gamers.

If nothing else, it's a massive change from Don Mattrick's 'play the 360' silliness
