Celebrated the 10th anniversary of my 30th birthday last december. I remember my Grandfather being the most popular guy in his neighborhood he was a tv repairman in the 60's.

Holy Smokes :Q

We were using out trusty 'Daisy Red Ryders'. We used to wear those vest type life jackets for canoeing as flack jackets.

32 and will see 33 in the unpcoming months.

I remember my only worry was coming up with 75 cents a day to buy 2 packs of baseball cards (30 count packs and a stick of cardboard bubblegum) and a can of coke. Wish my computer toy fix was that cheap!

Locutus of Board: Yes, I remember Batman on network TV. Adam West and Burt Ward. I think it came on at 7:30 PM Either Tue and Wed or Wed and Thurs evenings. Also remember Rat Patrol, Green Acres, Beverly Hillbillies on network TV too. And, when we'd visit relatives in the city, we might have a look at Star Trek on NBC. Didn't get color TV until 1971.

The Apollo missions. I'll never forget watching and listening to Neil Armstrong on B/W TV. Captivated the entire time that we had the technology to put men on another sphere.

BB Gun fights. Oh yes! Good old Daisy rifles. Which became Marlin .22s when we were older.

People were complaining about 29 cents per gallon gasoline during the 60s. Baaa Blam comes the 70s and fuel shortages.

I fondly remember purchasing premium gasoline for my first car and paid 58 cents per gallon in 1977. 10 cent telephone calls. 8 cent stamps. My first job paid $2.30 per hour. College tuition was an astounding $18 per credit hour.

To me, people seemed not as superficial back then as they are today. More distractions perhaps? Are we really more evolved? I wonder.

Remember watching the Dallas Cowboys beat the Detroit Lions by the lofty score of 5-3 during the NFC playoffs way back when.

Vietnam War.......... Quite a few relatives went over there to that one.

First Presidential election I ever realized was Nixon vs. Humphery. 1968.

Who could ever forget the muscle cars? And the George Barris cars from the Munsters, Batman and the Green Hornet.

Yes, this is a good thread.

At 59, (60 on October 1) I may be one of the oldest of the flati (plural of flatus - fart gas). :Q

I remember Time For Beanie (Beanie and Cecil the seasick sea serpent) as a hand puppet show, as well as Howdy Doody, Space Patrol (very early TV sci-fi) and many others. I'm so old, I remember listening to The Lone Ranger, Red Ryder, The Shadow, and other radio adventure shows. You remember radio, don't you? You know... TV without the pictures.

Alright, something for you 30+ folks.... My wife 6 years younger than I, gives me the strangest look when I told her about how we would get returnable glass 32oz soda bottles in a six pack and would return them to the grocery store to buy more 32 oz soda bottles. Does anyone else remember these and 160z returnable bottles, or was this just a midwest farmtown freak of nature?

I remember getting up early and not being able to wait for the Nat. Anthem to be over so Saturday morning cartoons could start.

Wylers Cola Drink mix...how about "Libby's Libby's Libby's on your table table table"

One time my best friend and I got into a fight while we were playing Emergency.Remember the show? We couldn't decide which one of us would come out of the firehouse(his parents garage) first. The problem was in the show,I think the rescue unit came out first in the opening credits and on the cartoon, the fire truck would come out first.

I really loved my Schwinn Stingray, banana seat and big handlebars ,till someone stole it . Then dad bought me a Schwinn *Typhoon*!...balloon tires!argh!

And Disco still sucks

Funny this topic came up ...

A week ago I dusted off my old $1000 Atari 800 system, built an SIO2PC interface that allows a PC to emulate an Atari disk drive and loaded up some of the best games I'd ever played - Star Raiders, Jawbreaker, Caverns of Mars, Threshold. Talk about memories. And that stuff runs on 8-16K RAM.

Nope. I remember them as well. Coke would wash the bottles, and refill them. Tell her it was the age of glass bottles, that's why.

OK anyone remember THIS??

The introduction of two liter soda bottles, and the advertisements that came with the introduction. It was a lady taking her groceries home in a STATIONWAGON, and the coke bottle flying around in the back, with the announcer telling you how great the new plastic bottles were.

How about you Califonians... do you remember John Wayne doing Great Western Bank Commercials with his children?

I remember playing all types of sports (mainstream and not-so-mainstream) with about 30-40 kids in the neighborhood every Saturday afternoon rain or shine. Back then, most of us could care less about pro sports (Hey...I grew up in Cleveland,OH so don't laugh). We only played because we could. Nowadays, you get that many people together (young or old) and you are bound to either have the cops called or a fight.

I can remember when the most you had to worry about was a 'bully' who threatened to 'kick your ass' after school. This 'ass-kickin' would consist of NO MORE THAN a few punches. Nowadays, if you get into a fight (again...young or old), there is bound to be a gun/knife pulled and someone hurt/killed.

'Experts' said during the late 60's/early 70's while the riots were going on that 'todays youth are desperate (sp?) because they have no hope for the future'. So what is the excuse for today's youth? They seem to be so wired and jumpy in a time where opportunities are there for the taking. I would have to say that much of this has to do with the parents (but that is a topic for another day/thread ).

As far as becoming an 'Old Fart'...I'm not worried! I guess I'm a little old fashioned (damn...i'm only 30) but I feel that the 'old' should be respected and bled for all of their knowledge. I still sit and listen to my Grandfather (now 85) talk of WWII, the Great Depression, His take on life, and whatever else he has to say (even if I've heard the same story a million times. Why do I do this? Because of RESPECT. Not ONE of us (that I know of) on this board has gone through as hard or as good of times as our grandfathers/great grandfathers. These are the true life historians who have EARNED respect simply because they LIVED it. I think that is what is lost in todays youth. The respect to know when to shut up and listen to an 'Old Fart'.

My rant is done....(senility is a bitch ain't it )

35 here...feeling the clock tick every second, I'm on the back end of a life and I hate it. Days, hours, minutes, seconds mean more than they used to. Sliding back into the void from which I came, trying to hold on? futile...Old age sucks. I need therapy, again.

35 as of a few months ago...

I can remember in school when someone was going to be getting in a fight when school let out every kid would be there to watch and it meant someone would be getting a black eye. Today it means someone is going to be getting shot or stabbed and no one is going to be there to watch.

I worked for 3.35 an hour and had plenty of money..

32. Hear, hear! (Or don't anymore, as the case may be).

I remeber when my favorite toy was a little fake shaving kit my bro made for me out of wood. I used to stand next to my old man and shave along with him in the mornings. Little did I know how much of a pain in the patuckus it would become once I HAD to do it.

Man, was I ever a late-comer to computers! Looking at everybody else's first machine, the first one I could afford was a Pentium 120 (Packard Bell, before I actually learned something about these things).

Hey HomeLAN,
My first was a PackardHell E153 (P150). I can't even count the number of cuts I received from that stupid case. No matter what I tried to upgrade, there was ALWAYS an IRQ conflict. A lot of people say PackardBell sucks (which it does) but for someone who is looking to learn about computers and Operating Systems...it's a must have . I still have that crackerjack box. It is now my 7 year old daughter's comp.

Hey guys/girls,

What say we start a 'Memories of the Good Ole Days' thread. It would probably be a laugher. Seeing what the younguns call 'memories'

"I can remember when all we had was SuperNintendo and that crappy Windows 95"

Just a thought

Anyone read or remember Tom Corbett Space Cadet? There were only 8 in the series. My parents actually used to bug me for reading too much. Some of the other stuff I was reading then:
Tom Swift
Tom Swift Jr
The Hardy Boys
Heinlein's juveniles - Podkayne of Mars, Rocket Ship Galileo etc.

As one of the radio show guys said "I'm old enough to remember when water was free."

I remember seeing when a friend was typing another (real time) and getting a response back. This was before bulletin boards or e-mail existed. That was cool. She was using something like a 9600 modem (what bazing speed). This was in the early 80's so it might have been a 2400 or less (I don't remeber).
