Dear Gov. Bob McDonnell: I laud your carefully crafted backdrop of ethnically diverse allies and sycophantic GOP lawmakers. At least you didn't suck as much as Bobby Jindal sucked. It was close though.

So before I spend time reading the first 15 pages, can anyone tell me if I should expect anything other than the elephants saying how much the speech sucked and the donkeys saying it was great?

That about sums it up. No useful details are discussed, unless you happen to be a psychiatrist studying Human behaviour.

15 Pages? Dude, you need to adjust Posts per Page.

I watched CBS's webcast after the speech for about an hour. They had a really small panel of one democrat, one independent, and one Republican. What was interesting is that both the (R) and (D) gave the speech a B-. The independent gave it a B+. Anecdotal evidence for sure, but I want to see last nights dial polls.

The funniest part of obama's speech was him pretending to go hard at the banks and wall street. Funny because you filled your cabinet ONLY with finance and wallstreet guys! There is nobody from industry background, no small biz representation, not even a women. His administration is like a goldman sachs board meeting. fucking disgusting.

I actually don't think the country is divided as it seems though dems and reps alike know Washington and white house are all crooked and are not taking their marching orders from the people. The D Vs. R paradigm is collapsing and the illusion is starting to fade.

The House votes and passes the Senate version.
Senate uses reconciliation to modify "budgetary" issues that are not palatable to the House such as exempting Unions health care plans (the passed Senate version did not have this).

It is actually quite simple yet it would be political suicide. The biggest problem is that once it is passed, there is almost no practical way to roll it back.

(I don't know how any Democrat can defend exemption Unions from health care tax)

Please don't start listing things you don't know.

Why should it be the usual suspects? You can call for it right now!

Because unlike those usual suspects I prefer to counter speech with more speech, not silence that with which I disagree or find offensive. I am really just making note of the hypocrisy of the selective outrage employed by Race Inc. when it comes these things.

Nicely said, but alas, there are those that will never get it.

Obama is a disgrace to the office of president.

It was nice to hear Obama actually mention nuclear power. Maybe people in Washington are starting to understand that nuclear is the only clean baseload power. Or maybe Obama has just given in to the fact that there are 29 commercial nuclear power reactors currently in the licensing process with the NRC, and they're coming whether he likes it or not.

Too bad he's still being Harry Reid's little bitch about Yucca Mountain. But I gave up on that long ago.

I agree his Nuclear and Off-shore drilling points were surprising (and you'll see my posts about this when it was airing live). I'm really wondering if he did that b/c he knew the "Republican Response" was gonna bring it up. It's like he got a sneak peek at it, said "ah HAH" and then put it in the SOTU. So when the Republican Response was aired - it was like "Wtf? Didn't BO just mention that he was for nuclear?"

Plus - I know people working at the NRC - they are doing pretty damn well

I work for a utility, licensing one of those ~30 reactors. The NRC definitely has a tough job right now, just an insane amount of work. They're doing well, hopefully we get through this whole licensing process without too many issues.

Here's the deal with the speech - much of what he was telling congress to do... was in *direct* opposition to what he himself did just week & a half earlier when campaigning in MA for Coakley...

If Coakley had won the Senate race keeping the 60 vote super-majority, I guarantee you Obama's speech would have been little more than "Fuck Republicans, fuck 'em in all of 2010"

Just my humble observation.

I am pretty sure that he has had his speech writers working on tSOtU for more than a week.
It seemed like the speech was choppy, like some of it was removed/rewritten.
I suspect that this was due to the fact that Brown did win which I also suspect the WH didn't expect when the speech writing process started.

Most def., his actions as of lately (flooding the media after Brown's win) is targeting the independent voters (re-work smaller health care bill, freeze parts of govt budget). That lost has caused him a great deal of political power. The Dems are falling apart themselves after a year with almost absolute power in two branches of government. (Nebraska healthcare deal, increasing deficits, continuously bailing out big companies - not just banks). The independent voters are absolutely coming out swinging right this upcoming election in November.

Wow this thread is so full of content. I've lurked this site for several years and only recently started posting.

It appears that BDS is really more like a rash than ODS which is more serious like herpes.

I fully expected that the biggest thing that the righties would be bithching about was that President Obama is going to let the Bush tax cuts expire. Crickets.

Instead it's nothing but adhominum bullshit, with that unsavory smell of that R word that we know is only in the imagination of us lefties.

Absolutely true. He had an "oh shit" moment when Brown won. Complete reversal of his message. It went from "we'll pass healthcare before the state of the union so we can tell you how great we are" to "Oh, you people care about jobs and the economy? Really? We've got this great free healthcare for you though?"

Completely changed the message and I agree with how disjointed and all over the place the speech was he was throwing crap out there to see what stuck. He was in pure campaign mode and not state of the union. The Scott heard around the world, we're taking this country back!
