DNA Tests Confirm Bear Was a Hybrid Wed May 10, 10:47 PM ET Freaks:Text

IQALUIT, Nunavut - Northern hunters, scientists and people with vivid imaginations have discussed the possibility for years.

But Roger Kuptana, an Inuvialuit guide from Sachs Harbour, North West Territories, was the first to suspect it had actually happened when he proposed that a strange-looking bear shot last month by an American sports hunter might be half polar bear, half grizzly.

Territorial officials seized the creature after noticing its white fur was scattered with brown patches and that it had the long claws and humped back of a grizzly. Now a DNA test has confirmed that it is indeed a hybrid ? possibly the first documented in the wild.

"We've known it's possible, but actually most of us never thought it would happen," said Ian Stirling, a polar bear biologist with the Canadian Wildlife Service in Edmonton.

Polar bears and grizzlies have been successfully paired in zoos before ? Stirling could not speculate why ? and their offspring are fertile.

Breeding seasons for the two species overlap, though polar bear gets started slightly earlier.

Very odd indeed.

You have to wonder how a grizz ever even met a polar bear to begin with.

But other than that I see nothing unusual about the kill. No different than going on safari and hunting in Africa. I'm surprised you're more worried about the harvesting of a freak hybrid bear and less concerned with the *obvious* implications of global warming bringing two unrelated species of bear together.

with the arctic ice melting, and the polar bears future in jeopardy, maybe there is hope in the fact that the offspring are viable when they crossbreed with grizzlys. i'm not suggesting man get that involved, just that maybe some of the less ice dependant instincts of the grizzly could end up saving the polar bear. that is if they hook up a little more than they do.

edit: i was thinking this thread was going to be about "canned hunts" of endangered species. so i was going to post this tune by Megadeth....

Endangered species, caged in fright,
Shot in cold blood, no chance to fight.
The stage is set, now pay the price.
An ego boost, don?t think twice.
Technology, the battle?s unfair,
You pull the hammer without a care.
Squeeze the trigger that makes you man,
Pseudo-safari, the hunt is canned...
The hunt is canned.

/chorus/
All are gone, all but one.
No contest, nowhere to run.
No more left, only one.
This is it, this is the countdown to extinction.

Tell the truth, you wouldn?t dare.
The skin and trophy, oh so rare.
Silence speaks louder than words.
Ignore the guilt, and take your turn.
Liars anagram is ?lairs,?
Man you were never even there.
Killed a few feet from the cages,
Point blank, you?re so courageous...
So courageous.

/chorus/

One hour from now,
Another species of life form
Will disappear off the face of the planet
Forever...and the rate is accelerating.

And as to this being the only one in the world per the OP's thread title...

This bear was taken in a fairly remote part of the world where there are thousands of people scattered over millions of square miles of land. One of two things are possible here.

1. The hunter in question is the luckiest SOB alive and really took the only known example of a Polar/Grizz encounter in the wild.
2. Polar/Grizz combos are more common than we know about. So common, in fact, that there are now enough of them so that they might accidentally wander in front of a guy's scope.

I'm inclined to believe #2.

Evolution has cursed the bears... without opposable thumbs there is no way they could pull the trigger. Yay biology! *cracks another beer*

They should be out hunting the ugly duckling hybrid polar-grizzly bears instead.

So would this just be proof that a polar bear is just a type of grizzly bear, with the predominant difference being fur color? Just like how difference races of people have different skin color and physical attributes, why would it be a question that two bears can mate and not two people?

So is the polar bear keeping the grizzly bear down? That is the real concern here.

OK, I thought this was going to about some endangered (or previously thought extinct) animal.

As for it being the only one:
Polar bears and grizzlies have been successfully paired in zoos before

Plus, if there is one in the wild, there are likely others too. Perhaps even a sibling.

This topic seems over-hyped. It isn't the first, it isn't the only one, no biologist seems surprised etc.
