Well, after spending a week with the game - I'm going to have to recommend against it. I've played a lot of MMOs at launch and I understand the speedbumps that go along with it - but this one is especially lacking in polish. The concept is pretty cool and a lot of the gameplay ideas will be solid once they shore up the controls and visuals and clipping issues. But until then, I'd stay away.
I've never seen an MMO that neglects to tell you so much about itself. Some may dismiss knowing how to play the game at the outset as "handholding," and that's fine. I wish you the best. The rest of us though, should wait 6 to 8 months to see what they do with this title.
I have to disagree with this.
The game does have issues. Some instances of mobs shooting through walls, some server issues that they are having to take the server down for... but this is no worse than I saw in AoC and several large free to play MMO's with micro transactions.
Graphically Sector 1 is rather unimpressive. Like Fallout 3 (I head FE'ers cursing me now), it is a desolate wasteland with small towns and rubble dotted around. The graphics are above the standard of your average MMORPG and once you move into S2 (prairie style) and S3 (Forest), you appreciate the graphics even more.
To clarify, I run 1920x1080 x4 AA, x4 AF, AAA, Very High textures, basic post processing and all view distances maximised. FPS in towns is terrible and needs to be addressed, I go down to below 10 FPS at times in towns but enjoy 30-70 outside.
Controls are quite fine in my opinion. It is what you'd expect from an RPG and FPS hybrid, feeling more Fallout than Stalker.
The back office team at Icarus have been working hard to patch and improve the game already. There are GM's online almost 24/7, if one isnt online there will be one on very soon.
I quite like the 'no handholding thing'. I do think it is very harsh having no Skill Point (AP) respec down the line because it is very easy to 'make a mistake' with your AP in the early days.
Learning, exploring, 'surviving' is the most fun in this game. A good crafting system that doesn't hinder your ability to go and explore or fight compliments the game nicely. Something different from the normal and in my opinion, crappy WoW is very fun. I havent felt like I have grinded yet and im 2/3rds of the way through.
They are offering a limited free trial period starting October 23rd. I would suggest that people go grab a key and try it for themselves.
