On a per-core basis an overclocked G3258 beats just about everything that isn't $$$. It is a budget chip which seems well suited for a cheap gaming rig, with the exception of a few titles which make good use of additional cores. Can also undervolt and get strong performance from very low wattage (IIRC ~0.85 VCore for 3 GHz Prime stable).

Have a Phenom II X4 830 @3.6 GHz which benches slightly higher than the G3258 @ 4.7 GHz (4 cores VS. 2 cores).
The G3258 @ 4.7 GHz, with two cores, roughly matches an AMD FX-4130 here @ 4.6 GHz (4.7 Turbo).

Check the single thread performance numbers, then look lower down on each page & you can see some scores from overclocked rigs.

Well since it hasn't been posted yet, Fry's has it for $49 by itself again, second lowest price it's ever been carried at. Making me consider returning the cheapy Celeron I got for a basic htpc for the family and just "upgrading" to it...

Edit: Now I see the new thread about the price lol, oh well mini update for this thread.

So almost a wash.

G3258 versus a Phenom X2 B55 (unlocked to X4)

Who wins?

If you already have the Phenom processor, then it's not really worth the upgrade. Coincidentally, I have my overclocked G3258 system right next to a system with a a Phenom X2 B55, unlocked to 4 cores. The both have decent video cards (GTX460 and HD6850) and there is really not much of a difference in gaming performance. Maybe the G3258 feels a little faster, but it's a newer system with an SSD, while the B55 has a Seagate hybrid SSD. If you already have a PII B55, you really have to spend more money to upgrade. That's the problem I have - I would like to upgrade this system, but there is nothing I can buy for cheap that will provide enough of an upgrade to bother. If I recall, the Anandtech review showed the overclocked G5258 barely performing as well as a Core i3 in a lot of benchmarks. It's a nice cpu, but $50 only gets you so far.

Yeah, I'm actually looking for it for an additional computer in the house (specifically for my son to use to play Minecraft and junk like that)

Sadly, I can't seem to find a G5258 deal anywhere

FYI- I can vouch that Minecraft plays ok on the G3258, but I agree with the last post that the AMD chip would probably be better overall for light gaming. For the same price as the G3258 combo you can even get an A10 cpu, but that A6-7400K + MB deal for $45 is amazing. The main thing for Minecraft is having modern OpenGL drivers, so avoid the FX processors unless you use an external video card. (Minecraft is very laggy on my FX-6350 computer (6 core!) with onboard HD3200 video, but fine was I added an oldHD4850 video card).

on multithreaded, you'd beat it, at worst tie if it's been heavily overclocked. If you're heavily overclocked, you beat it hands down

single threaded, you'd lose.

I looked into this for upgrade from my current sig rig. core i3s at 4.5ghz were getting 80-90fps avg in handbrake BigBuckBunny encode using the provided handbrake release; my Ph2-965 was getting 120fps avg.

New combo, "$50 savings", but not cheap. G3258 with an upscale overclocking Z97 motherboard ($10 MSI rebate & $1 shipping). Might talk yourself into this if you have plans to upgrade someday with an i5 or i7 cpu.

Reminder: Microcenter MSI Z97 PC Mate & G3258 combo deal is still alive, $90AR, in-store.

In-store only (great deal if you can find one).
$9 after rebate with the $16-off emailed personal promo code (must sign up to get these codes).
It was online as well at first, changed to in store only. I was able to order online with in store pick up at the Irvine, TX store.
Thanks for pointing out the promo code price, that code came out after I ordered mine yesterday. I'll have them adjust the price when I pick mine up today.
