Understand that board does not have a USB3.0 header.
I don't think any H81 board has a front USB3.0 header. The chipset only supports two ports, so those are always routed to the rear I/O bracket.

Also has only two SATA6G and two SATAII ports.

Edit: I stand corrected, slightly. I assume that the reason that that ASrock H81 with front USB3.0 is missing a PCI-E x1 slot, is because that PCI-E lane was used for a third-party USB3.0 controller. Still, if it works ok, that's a decent deal on that board with those features.

Actually i've built many budget systems using a G3258 cpu and this motherboard:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157450&cm_re=h81-_-13-157-450-_-Product

ASRock H81M-HDS LGA 1150 Intel H81 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard

It's a nice board because it has VGA,DVI, and HDMI connectors AND front USB 3.0 connection.

P.S. Microcenter carries this board and it's cheaper

How does this fair against the Pentium G630? Worth the upgrade or hold out for an i3?

An i3 would be noticeably better. The G3258 would be "somewhat" better. The G630 is only 2.3Ghz (2.4?), the G3258 is 3.2Ghz without OC. To say nothing about the improvements from Sandy Bridge to Haswell. Plus, the G3258 has QuickSync.

Has it been so long since we had a bundle?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.2541678
GIGABYTE G1 Gaming GA-B85M-Gaming 3 (rev. 1.0) LGA 1150 Intel B85 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard + Intel Pentium G3258 Haswell Dual-Core 3.2 GHz

$99.98 - $10.00 Mail In Rebates
Economy shipping added $4 for me.

I've used that motherboard for many builds. It's a solid board with Realtek ALC892 audio and Intel Gigabit Lan. Can't beat the price/performance, especially for the combo price!!

I need to throw together a stop-gap system to ultimately replace my nephew's first-gen i5 750 while using as much as possible from it in the mean time (pretty much just the 4GB DDR3 1333). I can travel to Micro Center. Is this a better deal than whatever I am likely to find there?

I'd prefer a board he can use when he's ready to upgrade to enthusiast components when he can afford to in the near future (at least 8GB DDR3 and K-series CPU). Should we look for a Z87 instead?

This is prompted by his aging system slowly crapping out on him. I got a great deal on a GTX 680, but his system can't even handle a single GTX 280 anymore (had to downgrade GTX 280 SLI to a 9800 GT EE to get it working). He's going to need a whole new system. I can't just give him everything so he's going to have to deal with this G3258 until he can afford a decent one.

Have you considered that needing to downgrade GPUs from SLI to an EE 9800GT, might indicate a PSU problem more than anything? That problem alone could make any rig act flaky.

That being said, the G3258 is no slouch when OCed, though I would expect in modern multi-threaded games, that a true quad like the i5-750 might out-perform it.

The other factor is, that Intel has sought to shut down overclocking on non-Z97 boards. So it has become a YMMV on Ocing these CPUs on lesser chipsets, especially with Win10.

Yeah, and we addressed that months ago with continuing instability. It's one of those early boards with the flaky Foxconn sockets. Tech sites reported them failing with burn marks on specific CPU pads with moderate overclocking. My suspicion is that they eventually develop problems even without overclocking even if the burn marks aren't visible.

The time crunch is because he lives several states away and I have to get whatever I get while his father (our brother) is visiting us.

It looks like this deal is still good tomorrow. I have work so I'll send my brother to check out Microcenter first. I know the CPU is $50 there and an open-box/clearance Z-series motherboard might be cheap enough to compare. Thanks for the help.

Yeah, a Z97 board is best, and would allow future upgrades to an unlocked Haswell quad.

Well, that would necessitate buying memory tomorrow and we don't have the budget for that. If we can get a better board it'll probably be a Z87.

A Core i5 Haswell with 8GB DDR3 would probably be his next upgrade with that board.

Why would you need to buy RAM? I thought that you had DDR3?

Z97 is Haswell. I'm not talking about Z170 / DDR4 / Skylake.

No reason to look for a last-gen Z87, there should be some cheap Z97 available.

I was mixing it up with Z99, which is obviously only for Haswell-E. If I got a deal on a good Z97 board then I'd be sticking him with my Z87 board, so he's getting a Z87 either way.

You can get a G3258 and a H81 board for the price of the z97 boards. Thats what I used on my cheap set up and I am still more than happy with it.

Nabbed the Fry's Pentium G3258 Anniversary Edition CPU for $44 and a refurbished SLI-capable AsRock Z97 Extreme 4 board from Micro Center for $59.99. That's $103.99 total. Nephew's going to get my AsRock Z87 Extreme 4 board and I'll get a bit of an upgrade.

I guess you dont have windows10oem edition then.

Was that part of one of these deals?

Nephew is just going to reactivate his copy of Windows 7 and get the free upgrade to Windows 10.

Edit: I see what you're saying. My Z87 has Windows 10 Tech Preview/Insider on it at the moment. Pretty much only ever been turned on once and needs an OS anyway. Thinking of making it a Steam Machine.

The ASRock Z87 Extreme4 needed a firmware update to support the G3258 and I realized that I had to update both banks (dual BIOS) so I had to do a lot of CPU-switching to get it ready. Now it's booted with his CPU and I'm getting ready to pack up the board and send it to him.

I don't have time to familiarize myself with the limits of this board/CPU and it will be going into a different cooling/power environment anyway, so what are some quick and easy sure-fire OC settings to configure it with before I take it out and send it?
