Well, I will admit, that I'm one of those petty managers that doesn't like when people wear t-shirts, slippers, flipflops, hats or jeans with holes in them to our professional offices. And yes, I will say something. Sorry for being petty.

that's a lot different then ragging on someone for wearing tennis shoes when they have busted feet.

Maybe they are just annoyed about all the time you spend posting on ATOT but don't want attention drawn to their web browsing habits? And it makes it look like they care about the company standards

lol, sorry, ooops, wait.

I guess the point is if sneakers are usually not allowed, then I don't see what the harm is in the office manager saying something, especially if he has no clue of a busted foot.

I'm with you on this. At my previous job, I was IT for a law firm and the attire that some of the people came to work in was ridiculous. The lawyers all dressed professionally but the regular office staff was terrible. Guys with big floppy t-shirts down to their knees, pants hanging down with exposed underwear, women wearing shirts with excessive cleavage, baseball caps. A woman even once wore a mid-riff top with spaghetti straps. Management one day finally found the balls to put an end to this kind of crap.

A few people around here wear sneakers with their business casual. Looks stupid as hell but they don't get in trouble for it. Then again, we are a government entity (public utility)

I find dress codes (beyond offensive words/images on clothing) for non-client facing office workers to be pretty stupid. My productivity has nothing to do with the material or color of my pants. What I wear on my feet affects absolutely nothing other than my comfort. Who cares?

I agree with this. We don't really have a dress code in my studio. Shorts/flipflops/jeans/ppl earing suits etc. You can wear whatever you want as long as it's not "in your face" offensive.
Mostly because none of us interact with customers, only other parts of our studio and sometimes marketing.
The other departments have dress codes however. It's always funny going to a meeting with the entire dev team and 90% of us are in casual whatever we want and the rest from the other departments are in suits.

I guess I'm just a grown adult and if you have concerns over my appearance how about you ask me or confront *ME* first so I can tell you why instead of taking the passive approach and trolling my mailbox or tattling to my supervisor.

Tennis shoes in general - are wearing tennis shoes REALLY that bad? Most leather shoes look bad with jeans/polo anyway.

Assuming your tennis shoes don't show dirty and aren't torn up - whats the big deal with wearing shoes other than dress shoes? I draw the line at t-shirts, jeans with holes in them, cleavage, shorts, flip flops, etc.. etc.. as well though... but thats just common sense.

Don't get me started on that. Half the stuff the guys wear around here are those sketchers like shoes that are basically a tennis shoe in a brown color. Others have those walking shoes that are basically a black leather "tennis" shoe. I just had a silver running shoe on for two days until I could comfortably get my unforgiving dressy shoes one.

No real dress code where I work. I can roll in with a wife beater, shorts, and flipflops and no one would care

But personally, I like to keep it a step above that. So I usually wear a polo, jeans, and dress boots.

its funny that you had to explain the point after 33 posts. and youre totally right. my office consists of 12 people. if i wear something im not supposed to, the owner will pop his head in and tell me not to wear it again. if the office manager has an issue with it, she will write a memo and email it to everyone, then tell the owner that it was because of me. shes never even bothered to come to me personally.

i cant wear tennis shoes for work. i do tho, especially when i know ill be in my office all day. the times i have to wear work shoes are when i visit customers or do site work. i dont think id like to wear skate shoes to a waste water plant tho, i wear waterproof tall boots for the site visits.

Petty or not, if you do it others will follow so someone has to handle it.

Buy those black/brown skechers if you're busting up your feet once a week.

Mess up their minds tomorrow. Come in with a tennis shoe on the bad foot and your dress shoe on the good foot.

But this is why I have a pair of all black tennis shoes. You can get away with this stuff easier with them. Also Sketchers makes tons of shoes that are inbetween a dress shoe and a tennis shoe. They would never know.

Most of these feel like tennis shoes but could pass as a work/dress shoe.

Seriously? Do these people not have anything better to do than police footwear? I feel like sending out an email to all of the office with a picture of my toe telling them I'd glady trade them toes so that I could be in compliance with the almighty Zapato Gestapo.

Actually they do not have anything else to do. Once their bosses realize this... their asses will be out the door. So I imagine they have to stay relevant somehow.

I wear sneakers, Jeans and a polo shirt, work in IT. Not sure if the sneakers are alloweed but nobody has ever said anything. I remember a couple of years ago they cracked down on t-shirts. Sometimes I will wear a T-shirt on Friday and nobody has said anything. Sometimes it is kind of funny. The dress code says something about woman wearing excessive high heels but then I see some of the woman in HR wearing 5" Stilletos so I guess that rule isn't enforced.

In your case if there was that type of crap of before I would have just gotten a DR note when the DR was working on your foot. Who knows the Dr might have written a note for 2-weeks and then you could wear tennis shoes for 2-weeks and the petty office managers could have pounded sand.

If you work in an office environment, you should dress as a professional. That being said, it is perfectly acceptable to wear tennis shoes or something more comfortable as you recuperate from an injury. The OP was perfectly justified in wearing them, doctor's note or not. Said manager should go pound sand if they knew what the situation was. If not, then perhaps the OP should notify them.

I work in an office environment. Just because of that comment, I'm coming in tomorrow with a tank, shorts, and sandals. Weather permitting which it should based off weather.com.

A good manager would ask questions before reprimanding.

manager: "is there a reason you are wearing tennis shoes today?"

employee: "Yes, I have a foot injury, dress shoes are extremely painful"

manager: "sorry to hear that, hope it heals quickly, have a good day"

Why? What actual impact does it have if people wear jeans, shorts, tennis shoes, sandals, etc.?

It looks trashy and shows that management does not have control over its employees. As negative as you think that sounds, it can be extremely important depending on what business the company is in.

So glad we have a reasonable dress code where I work. All it excludes is shorts or overly revealing clothes. I usually wear a casual polo, jeans and tennis shoes. The dressiest I would get is wearing leather sketchers.
