New day new stats. I'm getting more curious every day .

Earlier in this thread I joked about the PF giving some blocks to me, and yesterday i noticed some extra blocks showing up. It was only 300 extra blocks, but still kind of strange. This morning I checked and I had easily doubled my best day ever. I don't know if it was the PF, but thanks to whomever or whatever is giving me some blocks.....

Could't this just be a trick of /. ??
I mean, both our teams are the greatest threat to theirs. TA, because it's to close it'll certainly beat them anytime soon, and DPC because its the fastest runner op (next to TA). If /. can make both our teams loose some blocks (by order of d.net), that would prolong their number-1 ranking.

Only 2 teams really are competing against eachother (DPC <--> TA), If those other teams where a little bit more creative, things would be more exiting, I think D.net won't take action against both our teams without a good investigatiion, we're the ones that keep the fight going.

Who will be number 1 tomorrow, see it fisrt at distributed.net.

Gizmo, your theory is not a bad one by no means, but there are a couple holes in it. First one is that /.'s rate has not dropped any since the appearance of PhF, so unless they have been skimming some amount of blocks off the top of there dailey rate for some time, they would not be able to start donating this amount of blocks with out us noticing.

Second, Decibel, Moose, Stats Guy Mike, and Leto have all stated that they have no reason to suspect foul play with any of these blocks, successfully blowing a hole in the &quot;Lets give them bad-blocks so they get banned,&quot; theory.

What I would like to see though, if it exists, is slashdots distributed forum, it seams that TA and DPC interact with each others forum, and I know TA members have been into some of the other teams forums, such as HardOCP etc... But has either of these ever seen a Slashdot forum? If such a thing exists, it would be quite easy for the members of that team to organize this sort of dumping. But, it has always been my impression, that /.'ers were attracted to the team, not by the team atmosphere, but to be on a team that shares a name with one of the biggest geek pages on the net.

I have been doing just around 1,000 blocks per day. Yesterday I had my best day ever and jumped up 600 blocks to 1,600 blocks. No idea where those extra blocks came from.

Are you saying that the DPC's are getting a large amount of blocks as well? If that's the case, nothing is making sense anymore. How many blocks a day are the DPC's getting?

If you are holding back large numbers for the megaflush, I would presume it is substantial.

This thread was originally established to get an estimate of blocks being flushed daily. It probably would be a good idea now to add the DPC's extra blocks to such a tally. I'm not a recipient, so it would be up to those getting blocks to have another go at posting their daily receipt of gift blocks, and the rest of us staying out of the thread.

I went from 600 extra blocks to 1,600 extra blocks. I'm now in the top 3,000 for the day and around the 70K level overall. I haven't heard about anyone getting less of a gift every day and a few more people seem to be receiving extra blocks. That is a lot of extra blocks every day and the PhF seems to have to ability to increase it!

Dantoo, if you don't mind I will take the liberty to answer your question, because Chakotay currently is unfortunately not able to visit this forum regularly.

Ah, I see you don't mind.

As far as we know Chakotay is the only DPC member that is (almost certainly) getting blocks from the PhF. The first day he noticed an unexpected increase in his daily blocks was 2 June.
Since he isn't using a DPC pproxy, I cannot give the exact number of extra blocks he is getting, but he used to flush something like 200 blocks a day himself.

Notice how much this list resembles the one of RaySun2Be (&amp; other TA members): large increase of mystery blocks on the 16th!

I had a theory, but it turned out it wouldn't work.

I assumed that all the 'victims' had their email address displayed in the d.net stats. But Chakotay's stats page displays his 'real' name (&quot;[Dutch Power Cows] Chakotay&quot.

Oh well, back to the drawing board.

Yeah, the only place my e-mail is shown is on this forum under my profile and on the TA proxy stats. Whoever this mad flusher is he/she had to have gone somewhat out of his/her way to give blocks like this.

I heard a rumor that DPC were going to 'GIVE' TA some blocks as a gesture of goodwill for July 4th. They will make this known on July 4th i guess.

I conclude from what's been happening that this is the case.
That Chakotay also has recieved phantom blocks is probably a Red Herring to throw people off the scent

The DPC gift was cancelled because of the risc that it would bet taken more as an insult than a friendly gesture, and because of some internal resistance to the 'spoiling' of a large amount of team blocks. Its a fairly democratic team, so their has been no blocks saved or submitted to any TA members as far as I know (DPC Crew member )

It could be a trojan, the total number of blocks increase but its split up between a number of dnet accounts. This would mean that its harder to spot so it might be worthwile to program.
And it shouldnt be to hard to make, make a central server with the &quot;victims&quot; email addy and let the client check every block on what ip addres they need to flush. So I do think its a trojan.

If it is a corporate herd, they either have some awesome servers, or a huge amount of cracking power. Didn't someone say they figure about 300K per DAY is being cracked by the Phantom Flusher?

I still feel like it is a trojan though.

One way the Phantom Flusher could control a trojan's # of blocks per person per day output is by using a perproxy for each email address. They could then set to control how many blocks per day is flushed to DNET. No matter how many blocks per day were cracked, the perproxy would flush only a set amount. it's not like a LOT of people are getting phantom blocks.

We use a similar technique for PTE, where we all flush to a proxy that holds the blocks for a one time dump, but couldn't we set it up to dump a certain amount per day?

Set up one perproxy per person, and you can control how many blocks are being sent per person, per day, so it ramps up like a trojan, but levels off, appearing to be legit.

If it is a corporate herd, then DNET should be able to check some phantom blocks from several different people, track down the source IPs, and see where they came from.

If the phantom blocks are from various IPs, they could track down some and determine if the source PC is legit or not, as they were able to determine Rabbits blocks were from trojans.

Just some more thoughts on it. I just keep getting this feeling that they are from trojans. I hope I'm just being paranoid.

So what kind of progression in gift blocks have the other PHF beneficiaries seen? For me this started 4 days ago, with a gift of about 200 blocks. It continues to grow daily....first 200, then 1000, then 2000, then yesterday over 3500 extra blocks... Does it max out at some point or just keep rising??
