  Cuba and Zimbabwe

Anyway, this is exactly what needs to be said. People need to understand that the more the UN allows stuff like this to happen the more worthless they become. If the UN wants to be taken seriously, then they'd seriously contemplate the suggestions in this article like:
Scrap this horror of a "Human Rights Commission" and start a new group that's willing to acknowledge that not all countries are created equal ? that's a right reserved to men.

Does anyone know who nominated them? I know it's by regional blocks, but which nations came out and said "I want Zimbabwe to be my representative on the human rights commission"???

The new leadership of the United Nations Human Rights Commission calls to mind an old story. Told that the World Bank would be holding a conference on corruption in his country, a Cambodian official joked, "Why ? to learn how to do it better?"
LOL! Gotta love a gov't employee with a sense of humour.

if you had read the article...

Which I DOUBT ANYONE has, you would know.

They vote in blocks. What happens is that some of the worst human rights nations tend to vote togehter and pass the leadership among themselves. What is the cost - well, they just have to help eachother.

So, in the end, the guilty are serving the guilty.

Cuba and the US are equally inappropriate to be crtiticizing anyone of human rights abuses.

Cuba is poor domestically

america is atrocious internationally

America is the beacon of democracy, freedom and liberty. It'll always be that way, whether you like it or not.

Cuba is a turd world nation.

Alright now Cuba is a third world nation I came from there and yes it has the worst human rights ever my father spent 10 years in prison for political reasons and was tortured for most of them.My grandfather was a former Sierra Maestra fighter along with Nunez Jeminez and Huber Matos but unlike Jeminez they both denounced communism and got 30 years in prison.

Whoever says Cuba is poor domestically obvious hasn't seen the houses of Castro,Raul Castro,Julio Fernandez and such they all live in big ol mansions and let the ppl rot to death.Cuba is in the condition that it is in because of Castro and his messed up ideas on economy, human rights plus the medical treatment isn't anything special either.

Seriously too many ppl on AT don't know much about Cuba because sometimes I see post which are really ill-informed.

Obviously you didn't get the memo. The US is not considered a beacon of democracy, freedom and liberty by people outside of your nation. Rather, we are left speechless at your hypocrisy.

I don't think anyone of any significance would then be appropriate when criticizing human rights abuses.

The question becomes - should we listen when things are set up this way? Why doesn't the UN start taking itself seriously so the rest of the world can?

You mean like the U.S? Well maybe they take us seriously because it can be rather deadly if they don't.

When Syria or Cuba lectures other about Human Rights it's like reading a post from McGowan. You know it's BS and you just ignore it to get to some of the more intuned members posts.

Close - what I meant was that until the UN actually holds itself to higher standards, it'll just be seen as a worthless debating club filled with dictators.

How worthless can it be as long as it gives us a forum to debate with those Dictators?

And is debate the ultimate goal? Or is change and action the ultimate goal? If you just want debate where nothing is done - then fine keep the UN like it is. If you want the UN to actually be worthwhile and show results - it needs to change. It needs to hold itself to higher standards.
