It's called iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. Right now the iPad is about as fast as an Xbox 360, but graphical power is doubling every year. To play on tv you need the apple tv

That's one of the biggest piles of steaming BS that anyone has left around these parts. IPad as powerful as a 360? Not even close...

ipad 3 is pretty close to the 360

no 20GB games like Mass Effect yet but flash is becoming cheaper

the main thing is the CPU/GPU power in iOS/android devices is doubling every year on average, they have a huge installed base and publishers are already releasing a lot of time intensive games for it with story lines.

if i had to guess i'd say Sony and Nintendo will get pushed out of the console hardware market due to mobile devices stealing customers. if this DRM no used games nonsense actually comes out i'll just keep my 360 till it dies and do most gaming on PC or my ipad

And if that happens it will be a sad sad day indeed. Touch screen games? Not for me. Its not just about processing power and graphics. I need a good control mechanism. If tablets replace consoles then they had better come up with being able to attach the tablet/gadget to a tv and add control capabilities. Hmm, thats a console in my eyes.

touch is crappy for shooters, but there lots of other games

pirates is pretty good
i just bought bard's tale
baldur's gate is coming

and if these geniuses let Apple have their way you can just buy a $99 apple TV to play on the TV. i bet that in a few years as the storage increases on iOS devices we will see more controllers on the market to play on the TV. or apple can just do something like come out with a new wifi router with apple TV built in and a hard drive you can attach

instead of a powerful console box, the model with iOS is a powerful device you carry around and a cheapo dumb display device attached to your TV

apple doesnt have to kill off all the consoles. the console makers just have to annoy enough customers to keep them away from next gen devices and only leave the hardcore gamer market

Nope, impossible. The iPad 3 has the same GPU as the Vita does.

You also have to remember that the 360 hardware is about 8 years old at this point - I would hope that other stuff is catching up. The next gen (even with the modest rumored specs by PC standards) will put "console-level" graphics out of the hands of mobile devices for the next decade.

mobile GPU's are doubling in power every year, consoles have a lifespan of years. in a few years we will see a mobile GPU as fast as the current console.

1080p is going to be around for a while so no need to plan for a higher resolution

No you won't, and that's hilarious to assume. Do you think GPU power will double every year forever? Smart phones are still "new." They WILL plateau, and it won't be at the same level as consoles.

why not? consoles just had a 5 year life span for business reasons. it's not like tech stopped in those years. nvidia and others have yearly upgrade cycles for their chips

I just don't even know what to say, really.

Consoles have lengthy life cycles for multiple reasons. It isn't just business. barely increasing the power on something, or not changing it hardly it all (4S) and then selling it for FULL price or at a markup is business. Keeping your console for 5 years prevents everyone from having 10 consoles and lets devs focus on one from each console manufacturer. Can you imagine Microsoft releasing a barely more powerful Xbox every year and then trying to have devs learn new hardware all the time?

Consoles are not PC's, and neither are crappy smart phones for that matter.

the 4S was a big improvement over the 4 and i have hundreds of apps that work on the 4S, the 4 and the 3GS as well as the ipad and ipad 2. a lot of iOS devs will even release some new content for a new device like the ipad 3 while preserving compatibility for older devices. not a big deal. most apps today don't even need iOS 5, they will work on 3 and 4

the problem with consoles has been they totally change the hardware and kill a lot of backwards compatibility every new generation. unlike iOS and mostly android where older apps will work on newer devices like on PC's

if MS picks a stable CPU/GPU platform they can upgrade the hardware every year and still keep backwards compatibility

I'd imagine that it will be tied to your PSN account, similar to Steam. Otherwise it'd be absolutely ridiculous.

I'd also be very upset with the lack of PS3 backwards compatibility, I don't see how it'd be hard to implement that compared to PS3 - PS2 backwards compatibility.

These are all rumors as it is, everything should be taken with a huge grain of salt.

I bet the cell cpu combined with the NV gpu made it hard to license and develop a fast emulator. If they stayed with an NV gpu for the PS4 they probably could have done the emulation.

In regards to the DRM, blame Gamestop. They actively try to undermine new game sales, so I can see why the console manufacturers are giving them the finger. They can lessen the ire from the consumers by going to greatest hits status sooner.

the quality of some of the games is what undermines new game sales
This is a big thing for me. The developers can say what they want, but they come out with some horrible games. They expect gamers to buy them at $60, and get mad because people don't want to waste money on a crappy game or a broken game.

Why do that when you can get a console for about $200, talk and watch movies with friends over XBL/PSN, play games, youtube, hbo/mlb/specialty programs

It's all there.. The lowest iPad is what, $300?, AppleTV, $100?

Apple is going to be releasing some sort of TV with AppleTV built into it. It will not doubt have games for it just like the iphone does but I don't think it will be a strong console. However, I do think it will be Apple's first foray into serious gaming. It will probably have some sort of fancy motion controller remote with touch screen and buttons. I doubt that it will have serious graphical horsepower but it will probably have at least twice as much horse power as the ipad 3 and also a hard drive. The price will be very high ($1000+ for a 42").

yep

no real complaints about black ops but you can only really play it once. something like Mass Effect and Dragon Age can be played many times with different strategies and choices each time

one i sold after i finished it, the others i still have and will keep

I'm not going to carry around multiple phone to use apps, but I can have multiple consoles under my TV. MS and Sony have seen the numbers, most people do not use or care about BC. I know probably 10 console owners, none of them have ever used or asked about older gen games.

All the Wii owners I know, none even know what a GC is.

all the PS3 owners I know, none have ever brought up PS2 games.

Hardcore people with large collection care about older gen games, but they also don't mid keeping there old systems.

in the past the selling point of multiple consoles was to play the exclusives. is sony going to have any must have i will die if i don't play this for the PS4? Nintendo always had their loyal fans. last i read Sony doesn't really have any big console selling exclusives. when you factor this out i think backwards compatibility will come into play because it will be a way to sell more new consoles.

when the Ps3 first came out the PS2 outsold it for a few more years partly because of the huge library. and with accessories like kinect taking up a lot of space a lot of people won't want 2-3 consoles plus the accessories like kinect

and the PS3 has always been competitive as a blu ray player. i never use mine for gaming. with the new x-box getting blu ray sony is going to lose a good number of potential customers

just because one strategy worked before doesn't mean it will always work. check out the book Moneyball. Some of the people that worked for Bill Beanne haven't been very good once every baseball team started using sabermetrics

Old meme is old.

First off, the next Xbox won't play back BD movie, most likely they are just using the tech for storage and not paying the license fees associated with movies. Second you are trying to argue Sony doesn't have exclusives to leverage, yet what does MS have? They have the least amount of 1st party devs, Sony has the largest. MS won't be able to get by on better online capabilities, those difference will be non-existent next gen, they are all ready null with the Vita. MS is also putting there money behind Kinect and that bubble is already popping, just like the Wii waggle fad did.

I think Sony is going to hit MS at their strengths (online, social, non-gaming apps) and their weaknesses (1st party exclusives) while getting to the market first and for a good price. Don't bet on Sony of 2013 to behave like Sony of 2005, the have already shown they learned their lessons.

having both consoles, MS is better as a home entertainment device. you can use it as a cable box for comcast or some other company. it does music, better youtube than PS3 and other services. and MS seems to be adding more all the time.

if i had to guess the selling point is that the next gen x-box will be your cable box, gaming, blu ray player and the one box to sit on top of your TV for all entertainment needs. MS even bought skype and i'm waiting for it to be integrated into kinect.

i don't think the winner of the next gen console battle will be determined by the game library
