in the past the selling point of multiple consoles was to play the exclusives. is sony going to have any must have i will die if i don't play this for the PS4? Nintendo always had their loyal fans. last i read Sony doesn't really have any big console selling exclusives.

God of War, Uncharted, LittleBigPlanet, Heavy Rain, Gran Turismo, inFamous, Metal Gear Solid, Resistance, Demon's Souls? You've seriously never heard of any of those.

That's still a ton more powerful than what we have now. The new Xbox is supposed to be pretty similar in power from what we've heard.

When it comes to exclusives, Playstation has always seemed like a grown up version of Nintendo. They rely heavily on first party exclusives. A lot of third party, multi-platform games are still half arsed on the PS3.

As for them using an A8, it's an interesting decision. The PowerXCells can supposedly reach 100 GFLOPS at 3.2ghz. Remove a core from that. That would put it on par with some of the higher end i7s from a couple years ago. I wonder if a quad core would end up being slower than the current PS3 chips.

ign.com confirmed that the PS4 isn't simply getting raw parts. The GPU and CPU will get some customized adjustments for the new console, so simplistic evaluations can't be made until more is revealed.

Correct. That's like people saying the 360 was going to use Mac hardware because the units used at E3 2005 were made by Apple. I still have the pics from under the demo units.

I think people forget what kind of hardware developers are having to deal with right now. The 360 and PS3 both have GPUs that are 6-7 generations old built in 2005-2006 with pitiful amounts of RAM. Just about all triple AAA titles struggle to run at 720p60, and if they want special effects to not look so terribly dated compared to their PC counterparts, the either cut the FPS down to 30, switch the resolution to 640p, or do both. So any upgrade is sorely needed.

All I wish is that Sony and Microsoft both secretly agree that 1080p is the defacto standard so developers aren't cutting resolution because the amount of aliasing on current-gen games is atrocious!

First off, the next Xbox won't play back BD movie, most likely they are just using the tech for storage and not paying the license fees associated with movies. .

that would be an extreamly stupid thing to do. they have been pushing the xbox as a home media hub for forever, not letting it play HD videos would be beyond moronic

I just hope they don't ram starve it just to save a few dollars. I never understood why they put such a small amount of ram in the PS3/360. Even considering ram prices at the time, it made no sense.

I wish I was in the room at the time when some GPU nerd started talking about severe ram constraints and fill rates and was quickly cancelled out by the guy talking about how the cell was powerful enough to defeat Deep Blue in the next chess match.

The PS3 and 360 have the same amount of RAM. The difference is that the 360 can dynamically adjust it's memory usage between CPU and GPU. So if a game only uses 128mb of RAM, the remaining 384mb can be allocated to graphics. The PS3 has a hard locked 256/256. It's worth noting that 256mb was fairly standard on non-enthusiast PC cards at the time.

The PS3's graphical limitations boil mainly down to how it's programmed. The Cell certainly would benefit from 512mb though.

I'd normally agree, but with how long these consoles have been the standard, a LOT of games have been created. Much more so than previous consoles.

That said if I can't sell a used game, I'm in the same boat of not getting the next gen and stock up on 360 / PS3 games.

100% of the ones that sold over 80 Million units had BC. Also, the console with the best BC has 'won' the console race for the last 15 years every time, even when the console was agreed to be a total POS by the majority of the enthusiast market.

For the general rumors- the GPU the PS3 shipped with was from the most current generation of PC parts mere months before the console shipped. Yes, it is likely they are shooting for a lower cost model this time, but using a part that was low end when new 3 years prior doesn't sound remotely likely, although the thought that they have the GPU choice finalized this far out doesn't sound remotely likely either. At 18 months out the PS3 was going to have dual Cells with one dedicated to graphics duty. Obviously, that didn't happen.

I would also be surprised if they went with a CPU less powerful then they used in the previous generation. People can gripe about the issues of exploiting Cell and how rough it was on developers, at this point they have the tools and Sony owns the IP, seems like a Cell variant would make far more sense then swapping over to a less powerful architecture(for gaming uses certainly) to attract the small handful of PC native devs there are left in the world. Even if the rumor stems from their looking for a more cost attractive solution, a 16 core A15 derived part would likely be cheaper and offering comparable performance while allowing them easy portability with the Vita.

The Wii, PS2, PS3 and 360 had BC and the've all done well. We went from having no BC to having virtually all current consoles having some level of BC, whether it be through the console hardware or via emulation. I think BC is nice, but I don't think it's that huge a thing for many people.

The Wii didn't decimate the PS3 and 360 because of BC with gamecube, thats for certain, and the PS3 and 360 had there own limitations. The PS2 is the only console that had virtually trouble free BC with it's previous generation, but since the PS2 is arguably the greatest console every released based on other merits I don't think we can necessarily use BC as the deciding factor, though I'm sure people could make a solid argument for it.

I don't think BC will ever go away now that developers know there is money to be made on nostagla, but I think built-in BC is dead. Why let people play their old games for free when they can resell them online?
