Ausm, sounds like you have some pretty strong views about this topic. I think it's great you feel the way you do but you shouldn't expect everyone else to share your same beliefs. Let me ask you something. Do you think schools, public and private, should still be saying prayers as well? Are you a religious man? If not do you think your kids should have to say morning prays in school? Those questions themselves raise issues of what rights we have as Americans. It's all about our rights, or so they say ;-)
I personally don't believe our government and all their propaganda. So I don't believe everything they say. For example have you even seen an old cheesy movie called refer madness? If so you will know how so far from the truth our government will put things to make us see it their way. I might feel differently if I thought my government was completely honest with me. If I truly knew what I was suppose to be fighting for I may be more so inclined to do so. But if you ask me I think our government is the biggest legal group of thugs around. Using soldiers like you as paws in a chess game where their kings don't even really die. The Vietnam War was a complete waste of human life and supplies. The wars we have and the reasons we have them could be a thread in itself so we won't go there. Should we be proud to back a country when we're in wars where the true meanings being usually very benign. Sorry for babbling, but I just had to give my 2 cents.
