<< I was involved in some illegal counterfeiting of bus passes, and Im 16.

the police came and took my computer and monitor and printer and scanner etc... as evidence. If you want to know what it is check my system in my sig.

Does anyone know if I'm entitled to get anything back? Anything at all? Please enlighten me.
>>

Why did you think it was okay to counterfeit a bus pass? Very smart...

Maybe it's time to edit your sig so that the link reads "The T-bird rig I used to own"

This is from the SIIA's site:

What are the maximum civil penalties for copyright infringement?

In the United States, the infringer is liable for damages suffered by the copyright owner plus any profits of the infringer that are attributable to the copying or statutory damages of up to $150,000 for each work infringed.

What are the maximum criminal penalties for copyright infringement?

In the US, the infringer could be fined up to $250,000 and jail terms of up to five years.

Dude i know this wasnt right, and Ive already learned my lesson, and wouldnt even dare to copy anything right now.

Its my 1st offense, so that gives me some leeway.

Juvenile court is really slow though...It will probably be at least 6 months until im convicted.

Lying would get me nowhere, especially when the FBI's involved. I told the truth to the police and they said that the judge would go easier on me since i told the truth and have very good grades and attendance in school.

freejack2 I'm aware that technically you can get it hardcore for what millions of people do, but practically speaking it never happens. When was the last time you saw a story on the net about somebody getting in trouble for this? There was a thread recently about a couple guys arrested because they'd taken part in a major warez operation. Although punishable under law people who have this sort of thing for personal use are never punished very hard.

Why the fck is our police department going after high school kids spoofing bus passes when they can't keep illegal aliens from blowing up our buildings?

<< Im using my family's system downstairs...

My family isnt even PO'ed at me, my mom is really cool and already offered to advance my xmas money to build a new pc but i declined.
>>

Wow, then I really feel sorry for you. If your mom considers condoning your illegal behavior as "cool," then you're going to be collecting frequent butt-bumping miles at your local jail or juvie hall.

How sad. As much as I love my son, it's just plain bad parenting for your mother to be acting the way she is. No wonder you don't get it that producing counterfeit bus passes is wrong. I hope you never see your rig again. :disgust:

There has to be a balance in these things. Your argument could be brought further saying "Yes officer I know I just stole this car, but why are you concentrating on me when that mass murderer from '98 is still on the loose?", see?

The reasons my moms so nice is because im not a bad kid. You cant disown your son for making 1 friggin mistake. It was punishment enough for me to see them taking all my computer equipment which i spent over 1500$ of my hard earned money on (hard earned as in earned legally). I get almost straight A's in school, never recieved 1 detention in my life, and I am (was) in 2 AP classes for college credits in 11th grade.

Any time it starts : "I was involved in some illegal"........., I say, you're a dumb a$$.

This is why people think hackers are evil, computer geeks are evil. Because a punk kid and his buddies want to save a few bucks on, of all things, bus passes. Then come on a public forum and ask how to get your computer back?

You, gdawson6, take the moron of the day prize.

Edit: << The reasons my moms so nice is because im not a bad kid. >>

10 years down the road, gdawson6 says: "Just cause I beat a man to death, doesn't make me a bad kid. I got good grades in school!" Give me a break, you broke the law, time to pay.

Just so you know for future reference, the cop was lying to you about telling the truth. First rule when you get in legal trouble, keep your damn mouth shut. You only open it when you have a lawyer there to shut it for you when you start digging your own hole.

Consider getting your computer confiscated as minimal compared to criminal charge and record.

Counterfeiting is a malicious attempt to steal service and is just like illegal cable TV hook ups and such. You did something illegal that is of malicious intention and lost a computer. Too bad. Take that as a lesson. Consider your self lucky if you don't get thrown in jail.

Despite all the *ahem* learned opinions voiced, you do indeed have the right to your PC back -- but only after it is no longer deemed to be evidence in the case, meaning after all cases are done. That could be a while, considering how quickly the justice system works...... You'll have to consult a lawyer (and quickly) to figure out how to best defend yourself, and make sure you don't get screwed over in the process. Odds are you won't get anything too serious, but I'd think you'll be doing some community service time.

Good luck!

I just dont understand how an expensive Sony Monitor counts as evidence....

Does any money from the parts go towards the fines ill be charged with?

Monitor maybe, pc, probably not. When an item is used in the commission of a crime, the person usually does not have the right to have it returned.

First off, formatting the drive means SQUAT. It may not have to be sent off to a data recovery center. Software is available to recover the drive, and I'm not talking measly crap like Norton SystemWorks, either. So it's gonna be a toss up there, depends on how smart the local PD is.

Second, bus passes? BWAHAHAHAHHAHAHA, you gotta be kidding me...........Friggin bus passes AHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Third, if the judge that day has a bad case of heartburn, forget about your rig, you'll be more interested in keeping your cheeks clenched.

Check please, dinner's over.

God, I hate assholes with reasoning like you. You're probably the same kind of dumbsh!t who tells a cop "Why aren't you going after REAL criminals?" when you get pulled over by a cop for speeding/traffic violation. It's a crime, and if you are caught you pay the price.

I heard the guy who made Yahoo was some big hacker who hacked into some major website and was slapped with Major fines, but then offered tons of money to make yahoo. Is this true?

LOL.
Last cop pulled me for speeding and ask me how much I had to drink.
I said, "Nothing, but I can smell the alcohol on your breath. How long after you have been drinking are you guys allowed to go back on duty? I don't really care. I won't bust you or nothin..I just wondered. Seriously."

I have never seen a cop speechless before.

gdawson6 - Why are you worried about getting your PC back? Your parents had better be trying to figure out how they are going to pay for the subsequent civil suit once you are convicted. Even though there is little in the way of actual jail time that the state (except in NY) can do to you since you are a minor, in 99% of all juvenile cases involving fraud with a PC, the courts issue a writ order banning the juvenile offender from using a PC (even at work) for a period of 7 years (10 years in NY and CT). The next time that you are legally allowed to use a PC they will fit in your pocket - HaHa you dumb @ss

<< dood, you need to be concerned about your ass being in jail more than about getting your rig back! >>

No crap! Counterfeiting gov't documents is a first degree felony punishable by a 250,000 fine and 25 years in jail! Better start stretching that butthole now to get it in shape! :Q
