<< Whoa didn't realize that there are data recovery centers that can retrieve data after a hard drive has been formatted. Can someone please further enlighten me on the subject? >>

Unless you actually "wipe" your HDD, the right little program can get anything off of the disk if it hasn't been overwritten. Sometimes, it goes as far as taking a "picture" of the actual residual magnetic fields of "1"'s and "0"'s in their order, and putting them back together in their order on another drive to get the files back. I saw a show on the FBI on the Discovery channel a while ago (last year?) and that's the best I can remember it. It's some crazy stuff!

Good riddance ya criminal bastid!

I don't care how minor the crime, maybe now you'll learn your lesson and this'll prevent you from doing anything else more major.

Oh, and I must say... with actions like that your mother is on her way to raising a fine young man.
What ever happened to punishment? If she's giving you money it's like encouragement. Absolutely ridiculous.

If you are found not guilty or the charges are doppped you can definitely get your computer back! I'm speaking from personal experience. And it has to be in the condition it was in when they took it or else thay have to pay! Were you able to get all your porn off before they took it? I bet not!! And as mentioned above, they could only take it if they had a search warrant or you let them take it. Which did you do?

<< Your parents sound like they where fed at the same trough as Johnny tailban Walker's parents. You are a 16 year old criminal. you knew exactly what you were doing when you did it and you knew it was illegal. You find favorable treatment from your parents because you schmooze them like you try doing here?

I sincerly hope that you are taken from your parents home and put in a juvenial institution until you are 21(or longer if thats possible). I do not hear one bit of remorse from your sorry ass for robbing the transist system and driving costs up for the real ticket payers who now will have to pay for the litigation on your prosecution.

Your parents have blown their oppurtunity to raise you. They have failed. You are a criminal. You are a thief. You are gulty of fraud and conspiracy and counterfiting. Just by your own admissions in this forum.

Hell, I hope the prosecution gets a whiff of this thread. No one should feel sorry for you. You will get what you deserve, but it probably won't mean a thing. I truly don't think you will learn anything from this. You are enjoying it too much. Hell, all your buddies are talking about you now. You got popped and thats' cool huh?

My family isnt even PO'ed at me, my mom is really cool and already offered to advance my xmas money to build a new pc but i declined.

Wow, then I really feel sorry for you. If your mom considers condoning your illegal behavior as "cool," then you're going to be collecting frequent butt-bumping miles at your local jail or juvie hall.

How sad. As much as I love my son, it's just plain bad parenting for your mother to be acting the way she is. No wonder you don't get it that producing counterfeit bus passes is wrong. I hope you never see your rig again. :disgust:

I really have to agree with this.

It seems to me as though a few people have the wrong idea about data recovery. Ive had a few hds crash or were accidently reformatted and lose almost a decades worth of data. Of course I searched high and low for a way to recover this valuable data.

I found PowerQuest's Lost and Found at Frys for $70.00. It scans the hd surface for data and takes several hours to complete. When finished it shows you every possible recoverable file. Its very effective and saved my ass! Frys also had a $500.00 program that apparently had even more features.

The only way to 'wipe' a hd is to use something like Nortons Utilities Wipeinfo. It writes all ones on every single kilobyte of free space (or files) on your hd, the goes back and writes zeros. I do this every time I sell a hd, especially since I know how easy it is to recover data.

oh you bet they can.

Even after a several low level formats or wipes. In the worst case scenario, they will physically open up the hard drive and examine bit-by-bit under an electron microscope and it can identify each layer of the data. All the data written by wipe is looked over as redundant and it will focus on data in much deeper level..

Even RAM can hold evidence here

and considering how cheap it is to analyze the disk now adays and how data remanants may not get removed even after repeated wipe, it doesn't matter what that guy did with his hard drive. Heck they may find more trace of convictable activity he's been doing and been erased and wiped a while ago..

<< The police took my computer!!! >>

This probably isn't your biggest problem at the moment. Although I assume someone has pointed this out in 139 posts that were made before mine, I thought I'd point this out because your "other problems" seem to take a backseat to the fact that "the police took [your] computer"!!!

After one format it's relatively easy to recover data. After several formats and writing and erasing data it would be much harder. I'm not saying it can't be done, but I doubt a local police department would expend the time and money for a case like this. After I posted before, he mentioned the FBI had it, and they do have the resources. BTW, the government standard for erasing data is to overwrite it 7 times.

Edit: Typo.

<< The reasons my moms so nice is because im not a bad kid. You cant disown your son for making 1 friggin mistake. It was punishment enough for me to see them taking all my computer equipment which i spent over 1500$ of my hard earned money on (hard earned as in earned legally). I get almost straight A's in school, never recieved 1 detention in my life, and I am (was) in 2 AP classes for college credits in 11th grade. >>

Hard earned as in selling pirated intellctual property? By the way don't worry about the system. At the best you'll probably have to surrender it in order to pay the fine

Wow, you holier than thou folks really have no idea what the hell you are talking about when it comes to the law eh? This kid knows exactly what he faces so stop trying to use your ridiculous scare tactics on him, as they just make you sound like overgrown babies angry at the world for your crappy lives.

He did his crime, got caught and is now going to get what the law deems his punishment to be, not what you fools think it should be, so back off, because your preoccupation with anal sex is scaring me and the rest of the heterosexual folks on this forum.

If it bothers you so much that you feel the need to search the net for this poor kids name(and trust me, I know who has already tried, and probably succeeded at getting his info and giving it to the authorities)and info and giving this thread to the authorities where he lives in hopes of getting him in more hot water, get a frigging life, you are truly losers. I hope you are at the wrong end of a crime and I also hope it's at the hands of someone who's buisness you stuck your nose where it did not belong. You know who you are so i'll not mention any names.

If the FBI were involved, which they probably are not, the only sure fire safe way to wipe a HD is to hit it with a hammer and drop it in a river.

<= is a good boy since both the CIA and FBI has his fingerprints on file.

Bah, what was he doing? Printing fake bus passes? He will get 6 months probabtion and community service, wiped off his record when he turns 18.

I got charged with seven felonies for what I did and walked with a $100 fine and one year probabtion. No one wants to send a kid to prison for computer crime.
