Just curious what everyone's take was on who they see as composing the majority of this group. My initial take was that it was mostly hippies, as that's what I've been exposed to personally (friends, coworkers, FB, etc). But my newsfeeds keep churning out articles indicating that it's the Tea Party "don't tread on me" crowd.

It makes sense either way: hippies taking their organic, holistic beliefs too far... Tea Baggers rejecting rules and common sense simply because it was forged by someone else.

What have your personal experiences been?

The OP is correct in that is whackos from both sides of the political divide. Regardless of political affiliation, nutters gonna nut.

I don't think it's so much about politics, as it is about a combination of affluence and ignorance. Some of the biggest proponents of the anti-vax stuff are rich, affluent, and uneducated wives of men who stay out of the debate (i.e. Jenny McCarthy). They are basically soccer moms who have created their own anti-intellectual ideology derived from psuedo-science and a sense of entitlement about their children and society at large. These parents don't even understand why vaccines exist, to them disease is something you see on television or when you visit your dying relatives to peg down your spot in the inheritance.

You have to think of it from the perspective of a 30-something mother with a highschool education, who spends all her time watching reality TV and taking care of her kids. I am not saying that a person is bad because they do these things at all, and these women aren't bad people, but they have zero business setting public policy in the US regarding anything let alone our Medical system. A good majority of the anti-vax crowd probably would have trouble writing a 5 page book report on Lord of The Flies. They just don't understand what a disease is, how it works, or why they should care about anything scientific. They have gone through 30 something years without learning any of this and the biggest thing is when they think back and say "Well, I was vaccinated, and I never even needed to be! Nobody gets these diseases. My child will be fine, it's all conspiracy".

Much of all of this is the fault of the massive "Autism" circle jerk going on over the last 20 years in the medical profession. In the 80s and 90s it was "ADD and ADHD", and they stuffed our kids full of amphetamines. Now it's autism and their solution is to let their kids get horrible preventable diseases in the hopes of avoiding a disease that for the most part appears to be inherited. It's nothing more than stupidity. Where you have incredibly affluent, stupid people... you will have anti-vaxxers.

It's a mixed bag of:
1) people who fear the government (usually conservatives)
2) people who think they know better (usually liberals)

This is one of the rare occasions where stupid from both sides of the political spectrum are agreeing on the same thing, but for different reasons.

Nonetheless, the fundamental flaws traditionally associated with these folks are the cause of all of this - again, fearful conservatives & know it all liberals.

mostly educated, liberal elites.

<-educated, liberal elite

If I remember right studies show that the anti-vaccine movement cuts across party lines and resides mostly in the middle to upper middle class. It is certainly not just a liberal phenomenon.

This is probably the best explanation ...

Even Obama, a couple years ago or so, cautioned about the use of vaccines. Not saying that to make it a partisan issue, btw. I'm agreeing that it's an a-political thing.

Ignorant.

There are many things that have a negative component. I don't like pooping, but I would literally die if I did not poop. You get over the part you don't like, because there is a positive part that is worth the negative.

As for the part of you not fully understanding, that is stupid and not just ignorant. I would bet you do not fully understand computers, yet you use them. I would bet that you don't fully understand your own body, but you use that too.

Anti-vaxxers come from that part of the political spectrum where both the extreme ends curve around to meet each other.

I know some via Facebook. Each one is a helicopter-parent mother who is upper middle-class, holds liberal worldviews, and can't deal with the fact that sometimes random bad luck is all there is to it.

That's obviously just anecdotal though as the people I know tend to be liberal and upper middle-class.

It's a sad comment on our society where every bloody issue has to be couched in political terms, trying to vilify one side or the other. This topic is a great example of that. Oobydoobydoo's post was the best description of what's really going on with this. The DC power crowd is laughing at the lot of you that keep falling for the partisan BS while they keep bending you over and ah heck you with barbed wire.

I believe in freedom. If someone wants the shot, good for them. If they don't, good for them.

It's not for me to say what they do with their body. Sound familiar?

To quote George Carlin, "if you're pre-born, you're covered; if you're preschool, you're fucked."

It becomes our business when their choices endanger the health and safety of everyone else.

Thats BS. If I choose not to vac my son from say the measles, how is that affecting anyone? According to you vaccers, you are vaccinated so what will my non vaccinated son do to your vaccinated son? If your son gets it then obviously the vaccines dont work.
