"The most progressive Pope" is kinda like saying "moderate Republican". On paper, sounds good, in reality it only makes any sense when you look at the more extreme rest of the group. So yeah, relative/bell curve.

Old bigots that grew up with their bigotry being accepted/the norm aren't going to change. Best you can hope for is that they manage to mostly hide it. This dude is not exactly surrounded by enlightened modern diversity examples. Hopefully he'll score better in stopping priests from kid-diddling.

Yes and by all accounts it looks like he is aware of that and is trying to change. I don’t follow religions so I’m basing my point of view entirely on articles or reporting I’ve seen in passing. The church needs updating and he’s been updating it, has he not?
