Hi Guys,

I know it's been a while back but i just got a duron 1600. put it in my epox 8k5a2+ and it shows as duron 1600. everyone works great. i oc my fsb from 133mhz default to 166mhz and i got 2000mzh. so everything works great. I was reading a post that was telling me to close my last L2 bridge to enable the rest of the cache to become a fully XP processsor.

Here are the steps i did.

1. bought a conductive ink pen from radioshack and close the bridge.
2. comp boots up and show in my bios as a k7 processor instead of duron processor.
3. boot into xp and latest cpu-id shows my processor as an athlon xp. Before i applied the ink pen, cpu-id shows that it is a duron chip.

But my cache is still 64k L2. does it mean that my chip doesn't have the extra cache?
or did i do something wrong?

BTW my chips is an MIXJH or MIXJB when i open it up, i forgot but it's one of those.
and the chip was week 29 of 2004?

can anyone tell me what i'm doing wrong? or I'm just outta luck?

Well, if the cpu is the applebred core, is only has 64kb of l2 cache total. If it is throroughbred based, then it has 256kb of l2 with most of it disabled to 64kb. AMD did a pretty good hard lock on that so you couldn't unlock the cache for the latest thoroughbred based cores. Especially if your cpu is a newer one, you will most likely not be able to get the bigger L2 cache.

i can't remember if it's thoroughbred or applebred core. i'll check on cpu-id again. i think it may be an applebred core. will check be right back.

The Applebred moniker generally means that it was originally a T-bred that had cache disabled. The actual .13 micron Duron core was the Appaloosa, and people that found that some of them were actually cache-disabled t-breds started calling them that. Similarily, we have also had "Clawcastles" which were Clawhammer K8 cores that had cache disabled to match the specs of the Newcastle core.

All of the .13 micron durons were thoroughbreds with the full amount of L2 cache disabled via a bridge cut. The cache mod worked great at first, but AMD managed to "super lock" the later steppings so that the L2 cache could no longer be enabled. In the present, the majority of these "applebreds" can be unlocked, but you may be unlucky and have the locked version.

well,

i found out it is applebred core.

But i believe it is superlock and there may be no way to enable it. Because i did the pencil trick and it shows on cpuid as athlon xp but no cache available.

I have very related question: I've seen photos of the similar Duron DHD1800DLV1C showing L2 bridges trick, BUT it's different packaging than what I've got. Mine is GREEN and has different layout of L2 bridges (as if L2 bridges share contact with L9 bridges). Does this mean that my CPU is locked and I can not use the same trick to unlock its cache?

My Duron although 1800 is also MIXJB stepping
