A friend shipped me his computer to fix, in a big dell computer box. He insured the thing with USPS for $2000. I have received it and i know that at least one thing is wrong. The Antec 830sx's front is destroyed. The plastic top and bottom (the part surrouding the drives and the grill below) are both quite badly cracked. Anyone know if Antec sells replacement fronts? Also, what is the process of going through the post office to get money back, do i do it, or does the sender have to use his original forms to do it somehow?

Whoever haas the insurance slip should file the claim. However if he sends you the insurance slip, you may file the claim. Take pics if possible.

Goodluck!

Also take pics of the packaging material and do not destroy the packaging materials, that's a big claim and you'll need to keep all the evidence that the item was properly packaged for shipping.

Ok, but can he file the claim if the computer is up here? Also, how do I prove what is broken, such as if the burner no longer works properly (just an example) how do I prove to the post office that it isnt and how much its worth? This is all new to me so I have no idea how to get the money I need to replace whatever parts are broken.

The post office insurance (if they decide to cover it) may in fact send you to a computer repair shop to examine the computer and find out exactly what is / is not damaged. And then they'll pay for those repairs. Hopefully the items were packaged properly otherwise you'll (likely) be SOL.

Since the rate changes and the fact that they're losing tons of money this year, the post office has started cracking down on insurance claims. I had something sent to me from an Ebay auction. The package was opened before I got it and the contents smashed and sloppily repackaged by the post office. I took it in with all my stuff and they refused to cover it. They said they're not covering Ebay stuff now. It's terrible because they sure don't have a big sign out there when you purchase the insurance. They have no problems taking the money but forget about filing a claim. It should be illegal but what you can you do against a government monopoly? You would have been better off using UPS or FedEx because at least they guarantee their insurance unlike the post office which can pick and choose who it will pay claims to even though it sells insurance to everyone.
