Hurting for Cash is becoming much more common these days and complaining about it just makes it worse, so I would like to post a few pros about the lack of $$$. These are a few recently experienced.

1.More likely to ask for help and seek out better choices to save the dollars on the purchases I have to make. Not only do I end up more educated, I feel better about my purchase.
2.By asking for help, someone else finds more value in what they know and the humanity of sharing causes us to grow as a family. I meet more Friends than I would have met otherwise.
3.More time spent enjoying what I already have. I am getting to help some neighbors with tools I bought for projects completed and have not used them again for years.

If my Clients had more cash, they would be making more request for my time and I would have less personal time for what happens incidentally which is often far more rewarding in the long term.

Try as I may, I just can't see any positives to having less money.

I suppose people may try to rationalize some positives, but at best, they're only fooling themselves.

One PRO of not having enough money to buy a condo (as discussed in a previous thread and confirmed by a financial advisor) is that we won't be locked into a place for 5+ years. Staying mobile is probably the best decision we could make right now since we can leave in 1-2 years vs having to wait any longer than that.

Some other PRO's of learning to be more being frugal:

1. Learning useful ways to save money, i.e. coupon clipping, bargain websites, etc. that can become lifestyle habits to be used at any income level.

2. Truly appreciating what you have even more. Before I went back to school I made much more than I do now. I was stupid with my savings and didn't save nearly as much as I would've liked but when I had the $$$ I didn't relish a massage/facial/good dinner out as much as I do now since there are that much fewer and far between.

3. Finding fun things to do on the cheap - in LA there are a million of them! Free shows, free tastings, free events, and of course there's always the beach which is 100% free.

While I generally agree with that premise, I know plenty of people who have turned down the opportunity to make millions because it wasn't what they wanted to do, despite the huge amounts of money in it. Now, none of these people are poor by any stretch, but they consciously chose a path that lead to far, far less money.

Many times I have ended up in more incredible places than I think I would have been in if I would have had the money to go where I wanted to go.

Many times I have seen potentially wonderful relationships end because one or both people had enough money to leave when things were getting uncomfortable.

And just as often I have seen people make it through the hard times and grow in their partnerships because they could not afford to pull up stakes and start somewhere new.

An abundance of cash often causes us to get addicted to comfort and turn our backs on confrontations that need our attention.

Less cash could make us more conscious, and more conscious can make us do less for cash and do more because it just feels right.
Not a rule, just a personal observation....

Life isnt all about money, but being smart with what you have and appreciating every green back you earn by spending them wisely sure does help.

Yes, making less money can reduce stress levels but as mentioned above it gives you less choices. However, it strangely fosters a sense of community and comaraderie with like minded people (i.e., the under employed or unemployed).

When you have the bucks to be a pig and ignore everybody, you are less likely to notice the plight of others. In fact, one "those homeless people" might annoy you to the point of anger if they beg from you. If you have nothing to share with them because you have little or no money you are more apt to at least sympathize and gently decline them. You might even engage in small banter to lift their spirits and thereby feel better about yourself.

Good luck.

Yep only the people with no money are the ones saying that money doesn't buy happiness. Money makes your life more comfortable and allows you to do things that you couldn't do with less money.

The OP could have done this with our without money. He's just trying to make himself feel better.

Making less money makes you STRESS MORE cus you have to worry about bills and your life. Making more money allows you much freedom and relaxes you cus you don't have to worry about what you need to cut this month to pay rent.

I grew up poor and now have a tiny bit of money. I'm less happier than I was before but I'm also older so my values have changed and have greater responsibilities. Hard to say but some of the only pros of having less money was that I was probably a bit more creative and driven and now I'm not nearly as much and completely bored out of my mind.

More money looks like less stress when it comes to paying bills but less stress does not make me truly happy. Just more comfortable.

People look happier when they have a boatload of bucks, but I have worked intimately with many of that income bracket and most of them have as much angst and grief as the majority does. It is just that a large part of their apparent comfort comes from the constant distraction of their belongings that obligate their attention. In general I find most people do not know how unhappy they feel until they start to get bored with their distractions.

So as we see our money become devalued and harder to get, the more and more important it becomes to know how to trade with our neighbors. And when it comes to trading who is going to get the better deal, a person who is good at communicating, a reclusive person, or a smart ass? The reclusive, or the ass might not be someone you want to trade with at all.

Obviously with less money we are going have to learn better social skills which is another positive that comes from having less $$$.

Being happy seems to be more about how we treat ourselves and if we have learned to be inclusive. Because if your having an internal dialog that is nurturing and a few people who love being with you, then who could not find happiness like that?

We have plenty of money and definitely do not think it buys happiness. It does quite the opposite actually. Stressing about bills and life is only at poverty, otherwise you are living beyond your means which is your own fault. There is no stress in the typical situation other than what is self induced. People just aren't willing to cancel all of their outrageous and stupid bills. We save my wife's entire paychecks so we could easily afford cable but we choose to do the things the OP is suggesting instead - spending more time with people instead of the TV and making better decisions.

You can say he's justifying...it doesn't really matter either way because he's still right.

Having been a billionaire for most of my life, I simply cannot relate to your current situation. I suppose I might be missing something, but my money more than makes up for it. You see, I'm guessing that you are simply in a stage of denial. Once you have money, you'll quickly see the error of your ways. Everyone knows this.
