Yes, that means AT also on the edge of becoming extinct as well.

Enjoy

The government should use all of that unused power for running distributed clients. If only there was a person that could help out with all the installations.

can laughing lead to a heart attack? because if it can i'm suing you dude. hilarious.

Of course, it will come around a full circle as it always has and things will get better in the future. But older forums generally don't reverse the trend, so I would really look to newer forums where the cycle can begin all over again.

Eh, thats BS. Its just because of all the new people that came here.

Not really, some of the old timers are just as guilty of dragging down the level of interaction - if anything, they often lead the way. Not only the old timers, but even the Moderators have become more acerbic in their comments - I am sure they feel justified and they probably are, but it definitely does not contribute toward a more friendly forum. They may carry a big stick, but they sure as heck don't speak softly. Anyway, I gave my opinion and now I'll just sit back and listen until the discussion starts going downhill

All I'm saying is that it has nothing to do with world events of the past 6-7 years, leading to a change in tone of people. I don't know the numbers, but the AT population has probably increased tenfold since then - just more pricks to go around nowadays, plain and simple. Its got nothing to do with the average person's attitude, theres just more pollutants in the air, and like CFCs, once the douches get let loose, they never go away. Since theres so many more people now, a certain amount of douching is tolerated becuase otherwise the mods would be busy banning people all day long.

you have less people here for the main topic of discussing computers (the original intention of the site) and more here to ask why sally sue thompson doesn't like guys who wear makeup and listen to emo. that would be a good place to start looking for reasons for the decline in convo here.

Trust me, a lot has changed since 2000 or so. There are very, very few people who actually stuck around since then.

There are plenty of people discussing computers in the other 10 or so forums dedicated to that very thing. Off-topic is off-topic. It's not that we're not discussing computers, its just that the level of off-topic discussion is so juvenile that it's absurd.

Threads like this pop up a couple times a year, nothing to see here, move along.

Remember AT was born when PC's were still up and coming in power and experimentation to get them stable.

Now PC's have more power than the Apps can possibly use and stable to the point of Government/Microsoft Intel/AMD looking to take them over.

In other words they control every aspect of YOUR machine. It no longer would belong to you. The PC actually belongs to the Government/Microsoft Intel/AMD platform called "Trusted Computing Alliance".

Between that and the Government/Corporations (see Internet Nuetrality) looking to completely take over the Internet to control the flow of the Internet and Information, the Internet is on the edge of becoming extinct in the U.S. as we once knew it.

Yes, that means AT also on the edge of becoming extinct as well.

Enjoy
BBSes were founded when PCs were "up and coming", AT's creation represents the early stages of mainstream acceptance of computers, no where close to "old school".

Do you take off your tinfoil hat when you get a hair cut, or do they just keep it on and give you the classic "bowl" cut?

i had to breath deeply twice and tell myself "remember he's just a raving lunatic with no sense left whatsoever" to avoid replying to dave's bait. the idea that AT was born when PCs weren't yet stable is so laughable it sorta hurts to think about.

The government should use all of that unused power for running distributed clients. If only there was a person that could help out with all the installations.

can laughing lead to a heart attack? because if it can i'm suing you dude. hilarious.

You think all the PC's the Government is running E-mail, Word, Excel and sit idle for most of the time instead of working on a cure for cancer is funny???

I actually think all the computers sitting idle instead of being in suspend mode so we can all save some bucks is funny.

First of all this is the first forum I've been a member of and I haven't been here very long. I read the articles in AT for YEARS before I became a forum poster. I was actually going for the news link or something and accidentally clicked on forums, where I was shocked to find a vast realm of intelligent (and not so intelligent) debate, humor, and idea exchange. I realize that there is a lot of imbecilic posting going on and have probably contributed to it at one time or another, but I'm also truly in awe of some of the members here.

There are threads all over the net stating the same thing as this one. "Oh it's just not the same since ****** left", or "Things have really gone down around here since I joined X years ago". Really things are just different from when you joined, more members, more young morons with nothing better to do than tease the old folk, more inane topics and asinine posts.

If you look hard though you can find those rare gems that provoke your thought processes, inspire you, or otherwise move you in some way. In fact I'll bet these occur with the same or greater frequency as they did in the olden days of yore, they're just surrounded by so much nonsense.

The biggest decline was during 1998-2001. That's when it went from being mostly technical talk among intelligent tech geeks to a "me too" AOL-type circle jerk.

Thats not to say that there weren't really stupid threads back in 2003. Just not as many. I'm also not saying there aren't any good/entertaining/informative threads anymore either, because there still are.

Mods, though I have a feeling this will get locked, it would be really great if we all could have a discussion about this. I think back to that whole "Change of Culture" thread the mods created, and the backlash of some members resulting in their bans. I guess this is more Forum Issues than OT, but maybe we can figure out why things have been the way they've been lately.

Maybe im in the minority, but I feel that it's not good to lose members who have been here for 5 years (such as Goosemaster). Granted, it's their choice and everything, but something must be amiss.

Alright im probably rambling and not making any sense so I will leave it at that. Hopefully some kind of discussion can be generated in this thread.

Cliffs:
ATOT has changed throughout the years.
Not necessarily for the better.
Discuss.

You should have been here before the kids came. It was really different.

Meh, people will mostly ignore this post as I am merely a 2004 member but this is complained about in every forum. Wasn't it 2003 or earlier that Adul got the custom title "Queen of Nef"? Not to say that Adul is on the same scale as JDrake but I really don't think the forums have changed so much since 2003.

No idea, by the time I showed up, people were already whining about the "old days".

IMO it's another manifestation of the stinking, festering elitism that is a mainstay of this forum.

If you want to change the quality, get rid of join date AND post count.

It's the @ssholes that think that a 1999 join date gives them a license to "pwn" newer members that turns me off the most.

Forums are forums. The "quality" and sense of community of predecessors such as BBSs will never be known again, so the point is moot.

This is OT I'm referring to of course, which is a world of its own. Other forums here maintain a lot of good qualities and always will due to their nature. OT is OT. Don't look for anything deep in it - if you do, you shouldn't. It's a waste of time. Forums with smaller user bases are much more worthwhile IMO.

What do you expect?

The Mods lock discussions arbitrarily (a discussion about tobacco use is locked, but people talking about weed and alcohol is fine), certain old-timers are pretty much exempt from the rules where others are ruled with an iron fist, and serious discussion is discouraged because of all the useless trolls.

It's not perfect, but we have it pretty good here as long as you don't take things too seriously.
