I remember when I was in High school (15 yrs ago) we had combination locks from master. They were real thick and you could throw them around the hall and they were still good. I went to target and picked up a Master Combo lock. The case is made from thin metal (a little thicker then a coke can) and the back plate is so thin I can actually bend it in. The case is crimped to the back plate so poorly, I can actually pry it away with a butter knife. And it still has their saying on it "Tough under Fire"...

A butter knife doesn't count as fire.
If it said "Tough under butter knife" then you might have a point, but it doesn't.

This is a genuine Master Lock. It says on the back "Master Lock Company LLC"

Did you get a luggage lock or something? They seem the same to me, except they now have all these colored ones now...

It's true - I bought a new Master Lock this summer, and compared it to one I had from freshman year of high school (only 8 years ago). The new one was absolute shit compared to the old one. It was maybe 30% lighter, the spinning mechanism was not smooth at all (it "caught" on many of the numbers as you went around) and just seemed like a cheap piece of crap.

I think you should have read the description, it's made out of Aluminum for light weight, best uses "Backpacks, Duffel Bags & Sports Bags" where you don't want some thing heavy. Plus 3 locks for $12 should tell you something about the construction too.

I bought the same kind of lock from the same store at different times. They are significantly different, and the more recent one is much lower quality. why does no one believe it when someone says a product's quality has deteriorated?

Didn't say I didn't believe it but company's do make similar products for different needs and markets. The one he linked to is a light weight model for backpacks, gym bags etc. Yea it's going to cheaper and lower quality, 3 for $13 bucks should tell you something right there, light construction to keep weight down also equals lower perceived quality. I'm just saying use your brain and think for a minute about what's the intended market before condemning all of a company's product line.

True, here is the one they recommend for lockers.

It's like crying about buying a Kia Rio and it not being able to tow your 30 foot boat
