The question is, for the same price do i buy a X2 3800+ or a Xbox 360 ??

Hmm decisions decisions ? Well I wouldn?t mind purchasing a new processor, as I am an enthusiast and am all up for purchasing a new processor for a new OCing experience (not to mention the dual core WoW factor ), and also not to mention the new performance I will gain

But for the same (tiny bit more) amount of money I could get an Xbox 360 (the higher priced bundled version), which would be so cool to have before Xmas, and for what you get for that amount of money, the new Xbox 360 becomes very tempting. I believe the PS3 is going to be the dominate console when released, so would probably sell the Xbox 360 when the PS3 comes out, and get the PS3, but i want to get the new technology now, and yes i am aware that it comes out in november.

Anyways what are your views, would the Xbox 360 really be worth it, it just seems that you are getting so much for your money?

As im english the prices are as follows in £'s, i presume the pricing difference would be the same for the US etc.

£279.99 Xbox 360

£260 plus PP AMD X2 3800+

wow, i just read the PS3 part and im sorry i even reccomended a choice

first, DONT MAKE ASSUMPTIONS

second, stick with one..... unlike a computer a console is basically an all or nothing type of buy (ie, its really dumb to buy then sell then buy again)

Ask yourself these two simple questions, and the answer will be painfully obvious...

  1. What will the X2 do for you, that you currently cannot do?
  2. What will the Xbox 360 do, that you currently cannot do?

The answers:
  1. Nothing you'd really ever notice.
  2. Open yourself up to a new world of gaming options that you currently cannot experience.

So, the choices between the two is that he can either do the same tasks a bit quicker... Or play a bunch of great games that he couldn't play before.

its the ability to do tasks he could never do before, like play a game while doing something in the background.

Plus, the fun involved in overclocking it can't be discreditied. Personally, I'm done with consoles. You can play more games with better graphics on a PC.

There are A LOT of high quality games that you cannot play on a PC, just as there are A LOT of high quality games that you cannot play on the consoles.

Personally, I'd rather have the significantly larger choice of games at my disposal, than an increased ability to multitask. It's not even a close call.

I agree. A $400 console will last longer than a $400 processor, making it more worth your money. In a year that $400 processor will be pretty outdated and performance will be subpar considering it's not really even top of the line right now. In a year, that $400 console will be hitting it's peak, with just about every game developer making games for it and learning how to write the most efficient code for it.

I've got a winnie 3500+ at 2563 MHz. The performance is still great. Sure multitasking performance will be better on an X2, but not everyone needs that. If you had an older system the X2 would be the way to go.

I'll be getting the 360 and upgrade to a dual core when the prices have gone down some more and i have more use for it.

I dont see the point however in buying an xbox 360 and selling it again a few months later. Certainly not for the reasons you stated. A console being dominant in the market or having a larger userbase doesnt mean a thing. Just look at the current gen, the xbox is the better console but the ps2 dominates.

As for having to buy games, thats the same for pc gaming. And there are more genres than fps, pc's dont give you the choice in genres consoles do. It all depends on what kind of games u like and how you use your pc.

Seems the question isn't "which" but "when for each?" I too have a 3500+ (even if at stock 2.2), and just haven't been able to justify to myself picking up an X2 yet (as badly as I want one).

You know what you're doing, so have a good idea how much the X2 would benefit you. If like me you mainly use the power for gaming, so it would be a benefit, but not a huge one over what you've got. And for single-threaded top speed, the 3800+ could well be a tiny step back, especially if it doesn't match your nice current overclock. That 2.5 gigger isn't going to slip into the realm of wimpdom as quickly as a comparable chip would have four or even two years ago.

The Xbox 360 OTOH, whole new world of gaming possibilities (same with PS3, Revolution). First gen titles done well should be impressive, next gen even better. Then there's the whole "get away from the comp, get on the couch and console-away" fun of consoles that is a great change of pace. You probably already have an Xbox, but backward compatibility (somewhat) means lots of proven cheap titles to pick up. With 360 now I'd mainly worry about having a few overpriced titles at launch with the "What else are your options, kid?" scheme. The new Xbox Live could be a winner as well.

Anyhoo... bottom line would be "more new experiences/fun" with the 360 now than the 3800+. So howzabout this? 360 now, PS3 next Summer if that's when it comes out (regardless if you sell 360), and an X2 next Winter. Imagine what 250-300 pounds might get you by then. A 4600+ - 4800+? But you'll have fun no matter what you get.

Ditto for the PC, though. Games cost money.

Yeah I agree...I think we are being short-sighted here...WTF is he going to pay for these "NEW" games??? 50 dollars a pop...Get 3-4 games and you are up a bucnh...Those games will lose their value about as fast as that cpu in 1 years time.....

I say the console for game play cause I like them versus the PC...Now I have seen the console graphics and I do believe the PCs seem to be better, but at a substantially higher price when you figure uber cards from ATI and Nvidia....

If you are a moderate game player, get the PC...I ws and I haven't touched the console in years....

Last note: I would wait and get the PS3 cause I didn't like the Xbox (available games, crappy design, box was a little heater, etc.) so I dont think MS will deliver better then Sony, IMHO...

except that by that time the processorwill only be worth $300 and the xbox with be on sall for $300

i bought a athlon 2500 for 90 in 2003, and sold it for the same amount a few weeks ago. Of course i don't think the 3800 will do that, but i can hold out hope. the 3.0 and 3.2 northwoods are another great example.

i have had my long decision, and have today pre-ordered the XBOX-360 (the full package) except I haven?t yet ordered any games .. Unfortunately the release date is going to be the 2nd of December .. I cant wait until it comes as then I can hook it up to my 32inch plasma HDTV at home, just in time for xmas

I had a long thought about this, and realised that at the time being I am not needing any performance increase from my home PC. The only thing I lack is 2gb of RAM, because BF2 is really p!ssing me off when it starts stuttering when im in a plane, and then crash the damn thing :| ..

Anyways I now have to figure out what games I want to get for xmas .. Quake 4 is definitely going to be bought

EDIT: Also .. Need For Speed Most Wanted, Call of Duty 2, Project Gotham Racing 3 ..

ohh and thanks guys for your input
