I just bought an 8800GTX and I don't wanna have buyer's remorse in a month or two

Hopefully at most the R600 is only 5% faster then I'd feel fine with my purchase... I'll get benchies up when the card arrives.

You also have the G81 refresh coming soon as well.

I don't suspect the refresh will be out before March. Stop trying to get me down!

And hopefully it's just cooler/quiter/draws less power, and not much increase of performance

That depends what the R600 is if it beats the 8800 GTX by ~20 % you can bet the refresh will be a 7800 GTX 512.

Considering it has been confirmed that R600 has 512 bit bus with 1.2 GDDR4 which = 150~GB/sec bandwidth.. I doubt they will be equal, specially with high AA and high res

It will do nothing but kill it !! it will strangle the 8800GTX , blow some extreme scorching heat at it and lower its hearing aid. It will totally destroy it with its 1Billion + transistor. 8800GTX is a stupid kid really to be totally bashed and pawn :!

no no no. GDDR10 is already being secretly produced. its going to operate beyond 10Ghz levels and will pwn any card out there.

*goes back to making miis*

8900GTX with GDD4? The way the G80 works, it has plenty enough bandwidth and 512-bit wouldn't make sense. A die shrink with faster speeds/more scalar power? The architecture seems modular enough to implement this. Not to mention we haven't even seen the full power of the 8800GTX (DX10, constant buffer fetching?). No, the G80 has taken a baby step and long strides are in its future.

Are there plans for a 8800GTX GO? Stick two of those on a double-decker PCB and call it a 8850GX. There are so many options.

The R600 will have to be beyond an engineering marvel to beat out whatever nV has in store next. It would seem the GeForce is holding all of the cards atm, with ATi relying on its R600 trump.

R600vs8800GTX specifically? I'm guessing R600 wins in pre-Oblivion games but the 8800GTX takes Obv+DX10.

I hope that's around right I just want my 8800GTX last me until late spring/early summer of '08. Considering that my 7800GTX lasted me until now (I didn't need the 7900GTO that's currently in my sig, I pretty much got it for $50 and for that, why not?), I don't see why the 8800GTX will be able to play all new games for the next year and a half or so.

Even with a bandwidth advantage, assuming that is true. You need to have sufficient shader power to take advantage of it.

Yes we have.

When they showed the actual gameplay of the armored character running outside in the rain the frame rates were horrible, especially for there being no combat in that same environment.

I'm not all that excited the R600 / G80 performances in DX10 and that preview explains why. Granted, it may just be unpolished game development, but I'd hardly think they would give a public preview of it if they felt that it wasn't almost done. Not to mention we don't really know if it had a GTS or a GTX powering it.

But, by general rule-of-thumb, first cards for first DX versions don't perform that great. These cards are truly meant for outstanding DX9 performance with an introductory level of DX10 usage.

Oblivion has been an ATi strong-point until the G80. I'd be willing to bet that once ATi answers with their product it will be another mislabeled TWIMTBP title.
The R600 will have to be beyond an engineering marvel to beat out whatever nV has in store next.
Or it could be just another X1900 type of product, performing right on par with and sometimes better than the 7 series refresh but arriving before it. I personally don't think that will happen again but who knows, we are just speculating.

I expect the r600 to be faster than the 8800gtx, but since you already bought the gtx, be happy with what you have. At least you didnt shell out $1000 for a 7800gtx-512 a month before the x1900xtx came out.

Edit: And neither did I, I'm just bringing up an example.
