Yup. Real Chinese food is not something I want to eat. I watched this news special on Sars and they went to a Chinese market and you wouldn't believe the shit they eat. Disgusting. No wonder stuff like Sars originated from there.

not all Chinese food is based on unconventional ingredients. In fact I would say it's just a small subset that does.

but I agree with your comments about Sars. Many chinese will eat just about anything, just so that they can say they ate it

Is there a special meter that I can buy at DealExtreme or an interrogation technique I can perform on my local Chinese Restaurant's owner and staff?

Speaking generally, most American versions of cuisines are devoid of flavor when you compare the authentic counterparts. This goes for everything from Indian to Mexican.

Much authentic Chinese (not all of course) is complex and layered with flavor. The average American style has the same flavor pervasive in almost all of the dishes.

Is that speculation or a fact? Serious question. I never got that impression. It seems like the foodie culture of the US and perhaps the UK really influenced this eating conquest; most other countries are still eating traditional foods that give them sufficient calories with little regard for eating something for the sole purpose of being different or interesting.

I was also under the impression that many Chinese eat foods that they believe have medicinal qualities, like eating various animal penises because it will have a positive effect.

I don't understand.

Real deal chinese food > orange chicken, crab rangoon, chicken wings... the stuff that chinese people don't even eat.

But "American Chinese food" is so much better than the stuff that Chinese people actually eat...

It's fact. Food culture has always been important in China so people are always looking for new things to eat. It's a bit of a fad to eat exotic animals; the rarer the better (and the more expensive of course). This is perhaps more prevalent in the southern regions (Cantonese), which the Chinese culture in NA happens to be most representative of. Of course they don't eat these things all the time. It often falls under the guise of medicinal use, but frankly if you eat it once is it really so beneficial? I would say it's a combination of superstitious beliefs in medicinal properties of foods, and bragging rights.

A lot of Chinese restaurants have a second menu in Chinese. The stuff that I've seen people order off that does not seem very appetizing.

I think I'll stick to the "fake" PF Chang's.
