The reason Intel is not producing hot chips anymore

Since I put an SSD in my wife's 2009 or 2010 Dell 500s, she won't let me spend the money to replace it. It is more than good enough. So I don't see Mom and Pop needing an upgrade. So much for the need for speed.

Servers, though, always will demand more processing power.

I think the real drive in the consumer space well be for ever more miserly CPU's for the mobile market.

Where we fit in is . . . where? When Intel builds an enthusiast chip, is there time left for new lessons learned to influence the server CPU's?

We fit in by moving to server parts. LGA 2011, and its successors. With the new generation of consoles game engines are getting a lot better at using many cores, so moving to 6 or 8 core CPUs will finally be worthwhile.

Intel is competing, just not on SPEED anymore. They're racing to get chips into smaller and smaller devices. That's what the race is now. The performance race isn't as important as it used to be.

Since a few months, they have Atom for that. I think Intel will make Core even more suitable for tablets and maybe phones, but of course they won't stop improving performance. That doesn't need to go at the expense of power or performance/watt (Intel has a 2%/1% rule for performance/watt improvements), the smaller nodes will make up for the increased power.
