The Rebuilding.

This will be a quick thought, no doubt getting less thought than it deserves. Maybe this has even already been done.

I've heard talk abotu rebuilding the towers, and several arguements against it. I already made a post similar to this in the Ars fora, but I was much more awake. Go read that one if you want.

Esentially I think, once all is clear and a reasonable time has past for mourning there, the new construction should be a monument, but of a different type. There should be a new building constructed, but not financial towers.

Now I'm hazy on the details, as this has just occured to me, but some sort of (as I described it on Ars) Pro-peace building needs to be built there. I don't know if it's the RedCross who needs a building, preferably somethign international. The antiterrorism effort has an estimated $40 billion to burn, I think that would be an extremely fitting tribute. I'm a little wary of the whole antiterrorism campaign though. I hope it doesn't end in breeding new hate and violence. I think a building dedicated to spreading love/care/hope would be the perfect slap in the face of terrorism.

That's about all I am able to squeeze out of the small logical part of my brain that is still functioning at this time (we have no caffeine, only water). Please let me know your thoughts, and hopefully somebody out there feels the same way I do.

Well, it's a nice idea, but the $40 billion anti-terrorist money would not be well spent on a memorial as it would not combat terrorism.

Well it's not a memorial, as in a functionless memory-place. If the 40 bill went towards it, it would be an anti-terrorism headquarters. Obviously not functionless. If it is some other kind of peace-building, the 40 bill isn't involved.

Thats the first thing they should put on those buildings if they are rebuilt.

yeh, yeh, I've heard this. But that effectively makes it a military target. Leaving it succeptible to ground attacks. So you say, have military gaurd. Congratulations, you have a fully armed military base in downtown NYC. And unless you have military rule over every building in the nation, we'll be succeptible to attack.

When kids attack their fellow students, we put in metal detectors. When humans strike out against other humans, we get bigger guns. Stop trying to cure the symptoms, go to the source. We need to both eliminate the terrorist networks and find out what caused them in the first place. Only then will we have some peace.

i dunno about putting a memorial there. i'm sorry to think of this in a business perspective, but the real estate in NYC is way to valuable. the WTC was arguably the heart of the business world. unless a new WTC-type building is errected (stop giggling!) elsewhere, i would think they'll rebuild it...bigger & badder. maybe a new WTC-type building and a memorial wouldn't be out of the question tho...
