I'm planning on getting a new 22" LCD, maybe a BENQ FP222W, but I realised that all my PCs don't support the 1680x1050 native resolution. What's the closest resolution that will be supported by the PC and monitor?

Depends on your video card specs, any decently modern card should be able to support that resolution I would think.

You can create and apply any resolution (and refresh rate) specification you like through the graphics card control panel.

If your present video card does not support the native resolution, replace it with one that does. Just about all current cards support 1680 x 1050.

1. Go to your desktop > right click > Properties > Settings tab and see how high it goes.

You also want to make sure that you can get that resolution at a decent refresh rate.
Right under where you adjust the resolution there is (for me) an Advanced button. Click that > Monitor tab > see how high of a refresh rate you can run at that res.

Personally, I have a hard time with anything below 75 Hz, but my video card at its highest res (1600x1200?) only goes to 60 Hz. For alot of people 60 seems to be OK.

2. Make sure you have the following for any potential upgrade to your video card:
a. power supply with sufficient juice and the right connectors
b. a slot to fit it. AGP or PCIe or god help you just PCI
c. room to fit it

LCDs don't have refresh rates. The 60 setting is just there - it really has no effect because LCD pixels are staring - refresh relates to a CRT electron beam scan. LCDs do have response time, but that is not user adjustable.

I have canceled the option "Hide modes that this monitor cannot display"
Around 1680x1050 I see: 1360x768; 1600x900; 1600x1024 (this looks like the closest one); 1600x1200;.....This is from a 6600GT.
I'm not going to upgrade only because of this, but if you know a cheap video card able to output 1680x1050 I will buy one and install it on an older PC.
Thank you.

You don't want to run at a non-native resolution. What video card do you have? You can probably use hacked drivers like Omegas to get custom resolutions.

What about Nvidia 6100 and 6150 IGP? Do they support 1680x1050? I heard the Intel G965 does not.

I can get higher than 192x1200, but that's not the problem. The problem is there is no 1680x1050.
mercanucaribe, do you have a link to this drivers?

ghidu, have a look at THIS LINK to a picture of the control panel for my nVidia 7900GTX. As you can see, you can set any res you like as a custom res to choose from in the drop down menu.

Also, you graphics card driver will automatically pick up the supported resolutions from the monitor when hooked up.

What graphics card are you currently running?

A 6600GT. Do you know what is the minimum required for a 22" LCD?

I?m not entirely sure, have you a link to the monitor you?re looking to buy?

EDIT: Is your question with regards to the minimum resolution supported by the monitor?

edit: when my 6800GT was in RMA I used PCI 5200fx to run my 22" CHIMEI monitor.
6600GT is ABSOLUTELY ENOUGH to run a 22" LCD.
Just go ahead and buy it. No additional configuration necessary, ur comp will pick up rez of teh monitor!
