The Retro PC FPS thread

I regularly replay older FPSes (probably more than I play new ones actually), so I’d be interested to hear from others who do the same.

Requirements:

• PC platform, 2006 or older.
• You regularly replay it, you recently replayed it, or you plan to replay it in the future.

I’m currently replaying No One Lives Forever 1 (2000). The texture quality looks mostly dated but the gun-play still feels very smooth. I also found a hidden conversation you can have with one of the intercoms by one of the starting doors.

I also recently replayed Jedi Knight 2 (2002), Halo 1 (2003).

Jedi Knight 2 still had really crisp textures considering it’s an 11 year old game, and the Storm Trooper models didn’t look dated at all. Lightsaber/force use was still fun, and the good attention to detail in the level design was quite visible.

Halo 1 looked extremely good and its visuals hold up amazingly well ten years later.

I'm not sure when, but I'll re-play HeXen eventually (within the coming month or so I'd guess). I remember completing it once with the fighter. I don't think I completed it with the other two characters (cleric and mage) although I did try for some levels with the cleric I believe (it's been many years since). I also got the expansion pack (Deathkings) for it so it's going to be lengthy enough of a play-through. I will also re-play two FPS games on my PS1 when I feel like it. Namely Codename: Tenka and Powerslave (also known as Exhumed). I won't play them "soon" but some time next month I guess I'll start at least one of them, and progress my play-through over the following weeks, occasionally. I actually don't remember completing Tenka (now that I think about it... maybe I did though but heck I just don't recall). I loved Powerslave back then, my copy is still the original one I bought (not Tenka though, that one is used from eBay).

And, finally I guess I'll try to finally complete Blood (I bought the GoG.com version). Ever since I bought it I never continued my saved-game, and as of now I just don't remember where I put that saved-game, if anywhere at all. If I can't find my old-school DVD saved-games back-up somewhere in the abyss of my cardboard box collections of games and saves I will just try to play it from start again. I could name a bunch of other games (not just for PC though, although many of them I think were released for PC anyway, such as Powerslave which I know exists for PC, but mine is for the PS1) but I've played those recently enough, or on the other hand I just won't touch them anytime soon. And not because I don't like them, but because I don't have much spare time for too many games at once, so I have to scatter them within months, usually.

I've been playing retro this or that lately.

I played a bunch of old adventure games last year that I never got around to before (The Dig, Aliens, Vampire Masquerade, Planescape: Torment, Harvester, I have no Mouth but I Must Scream) as well as System Shock 2 (again).

I almost got the Zork pack on GoG when it was on sale, but talked myself out of it because I just don't think I could go through text adventures in this day and age and scold myself for getting games I know I'll never actually play again (Like the Fallouts) and other ones that are being released there.

On top of that I am about 50 hours into Xenogears which is a game I have yet to make it all the way through, but I'm determined to this time.

I always tend to keep stuff like Doom, Heretic, Hexen, and Duke3D on my system, as their general lack of plot make them great pick-up-n-frag titles. Sadly there seems to be no complete source ports for Wolf3D.

Also if your looking for something to spice up your Dooms I'd check out Brutal Doom.

I tried Doom, Duke3D, Hexen & Heretic recently. Also Quake I & II, Half Life 1 & 2 and Unreal Tournaments.

None of them really kept my attention other than HL 1 & 2 (which I then subsequently beat all their expansions - Blue Shift, Episode 1 & 2, and the other HL1 expansions I can't think of). I played TONS of Quake 2 back in the day, but the single player never was very good.

The Dig and Planescape were excellent games. I haven't played either of them in years.

I have Vampire Masquerade waiting for me to finish the games I'm currently playing, I never played it so I'm looking forward to it. I have also never played any of the System Shock games, so I've added it to my list.
For System Shock, should I skip #1 and go straight to #2? Or is #1 still worth playing?

I have to play through F.E.A.R. at least once a year.

Thanks to GoG selling System Shock 2, I've been going through that game for the first time.

I still play the original CS online quite a bit and I play through HL1 and Max Payne every so often.

Ahh, Halo 1 multiplayer. One of the last great games with lag shooting. I spent far too many hours mastering the in and outs of the pistol, sniper rifle, banshee, and ghost.

Lag stickying a fleeing warthog from a cross the map on Blood Gulch...good times.

I started playing System Shock, and put that on hold for now. The mouselook mod helps, but I wish Dosbox could run the higher-resolutions better. I was screwing around with System Shock 2 before gog re-released it, and I'm playing around one more time before going back to System Shock. Running all of the most recent graphics mods on SS2, and surprisingly FINALLY got the Nurse Bloom mod to work correctly.

Serious Sam First and Second Encounter are always good for a larf. As mentioned earlier, CS: Source is older than 2006 and that's probably the game I play most frequently.

Just the other day I was looking through a thread about old games and the nostalgia was overhwelming... So many amazing games I used to play as a kid that I had forgotten about

Yup, FEAR is a yearly played title for me, same with GTA4.

Been meaning to pick a copy of that for ages now, but my Steam backlog is so huge I've been trying to fend off buying other titles unless they're dirt cheap.
