I think Quake has aged wonderfully. Game still is a blast to play. Doom not so much in my eyes.

Duke Nukem and Soldier of Fortune. Add in a case of Mountain Dew and Popcorn and I will never leave my prison cell.

I'm in definite agreement with Fear 1 - that game still has great particle effects, gunplay and AI, and the graphics hold up really well too.

I doubt it runs Crimson Skies properly...as well as other games.
I meant it runs all of the games in my library.

F.E.A.R. was a big step forward in AI for the FPS genre, IMO. I think that is one of the biggest reasons it was such a great game.

I remember that being the first FPS I played where I felt like the NPC's were real characters and not just a handful of polygons stamping around.

One of the things I love about F.E.A.R. is that it actually takes time to slowly, and effectively build up the horror elements. Which is quite impressive considering most western horror now consists of endless jump scares and some guy beating you over the head with a monster screaming "OOOOOH! SCARY! SOOOOOO SCARY! BOOGLE BOOGLE BOOGLE!!!"

I played Doom 2 all the way up to Downtown fairly recently, but haven't played it much since then.

For those looking for more recommendations than what has been said, give Tron 2.0 a shot. And if you want a laugh, Witchhaven 2, Shadow Warrior or Rise of the Triad.

in case anyone is interested, there is an unofficial patch for Quake 2, ver 3.23, that fixes a few things and gives wide screen support.

makes the game more enjoyable.

Another Doom 64 project I'd forgotten about is Doom 64 EX. I'd originally left this out because the last time I tried it it was rather spartan on some features, (poor mouse look, no crosshair) but has added more functionally recently as I have found out

The main difference between EX and Absolution is that EX comes with an app that creates a WAD from a Doom 64 ROM (which you must provide yourself for obvious legal reasons). The same fellow is also working on a Turok EX, which I must say I'm rather excited about. I really like Turok 1 and 2 but playing them with a gamepad (especially with the N64 pad) is less then a pleasant experience, not to mention the awful frame rates and the very muddy visuals of the N64.

Another nifty title I ran across awhile back is Star Wars: Republic Commando if your into squad based shooters. Note that the AI can be a bit obtuse at times and there is one enemy that you will come to hate with the fury of a thousand suns.

Lots of great titles in this thread, I just recently replayed Far Cry and intend to replay Max Payne 2. Always loved the original FEAR too but I'm not a horror fan and there's just something about creepy undead kids that gets to me. FEAR always made me tense inbetween action scenes where you never know when Alma might sneak up on you.

Another game I love that I don't believe has been mentioned yet is RTCW, while its SP was nothing to write home about I still love it and for it's day the MP was brilliant.

Who has mentioned the oldest and most obscure game yet? That always determines the winner in any forum "remember back in the day" threads.

I'm not sure how old Dark Messiah is though, but I enjoyed that game quite a bit. Its main problem was that the kick was overpowered. I couldn't get into the multiplayer either.

Terminator 2029 (actually not free FPS, but step by step FPS) but when you took enough damage you had to hide and "repair" which was just a time based shutdown.. The later true 3D terminator FPS where quite fun too I thought..

Cyclones by SSI true 3D but you used the mouse to shoot ANYWHERE.. think DOOM but you could move the cross hairs anywhere (like a shooter game in the arcades).. sure true 3D movement is in all games now.. but it was the first of the single plane games that let you shoot anyplace.

F.E.A.R. definitely, awesome game. Not much besides that, been eye balling systemshock2, but worried i won't be able to stand the aged graphics.
