It doesn't. The OP's topic title is misleading.
The article makes a good point. There is nothing wrong with using recycled paper to make toilet paper and there is no good reason why we can't start using more ecologically friendly toilet paper in this country.
The wood used for TP comes from renewable tree farms.
Recycled TP is rough and abrasive.
Not only do I fail to see how TP is harmful to the ecology, but I fail to see any benefit from using recycling to make the product.
Trees are the ONLY consumable, renewable resource crop that people cry about when harvested. WHY???

Google tree farms +paper to find out that the vast majority of wood going to paper pulp comes from tree farm lands. The minority that comes from old growth is actually leftovers from timber harvesting (old growth makes for the best large timber, tree farms makes for the best small timber and pulp.
It would be absolutely silly to use large, old growth trees for pulp when solid wood is in such demand and sells for so much more.
Trees are a renewable farmed resource, people. Don' let alarmist activists mislead you into tearing your asshole to shreds with rough recycled TP for no good reason.
