What should really leap out at you from that list is just how lucrative "public service" is. DC, MD, and VA are all on that list due to DC and it's suburbs. If that is not enough consider that the recession has barely grazed the DC metro area. Sure housing prices took a tumble and unemployment ticked up a couple of points to 5.8% but that is far below the 9.5% nationwide rate.

It's not government jobs, it's the private sector that leeches off the government. How much do you think Blackwater employees make?

Well, if you consider a family earning 200k plus.
Where do they live?
Well, the top 10 states might surprise you (note that its a percentage of the population).
1. District of Columbia
2. Connecticut
3. New Jersey
4. Maryland
5. Massachusetts
6. California
7. Virginia
8. New York
9. Hawaii
10. Illinois

Wow. I guess high taxes and high services really does make you healthy, wealthy and wise.

Not really surprising IMO.

1. Nation's capital
2. Old Yankee money and Yale
3. New York City Suburb
4. Nation's capital suburb
5. Boston and MIT
6. Silicon Valley, tech boomers
7. Nation's capital suburb 2
8. New York City
9. Vacation Spot
10. Chicago

Basically around major centers of economic and political activity. Makes sense to me. *shrug*

isn't DC really really shitty?
took a trip there when i was young, holy shit it made the south bronx look nice.

Parts of it certainly meet that description, but other areas (ie: Dupont Circle) are actually pretty nice. Above all, DC is where the government is. Government = high paying jobs for highly educated and/or connected people. A lot of these people also live in neighboring VA/MD and commute. Hence their presence on the list.

CT & NJ are on this list because of NYC. Fairfield County is where many of the ultra-wealthy from NYC live-they skew CT's numbers drastically. I'm sure there are similar parts in northern NJ. For that matter, NY state outside of the NYC region is totally different-think a hilly Iowa with a lot more snow.

Like IrishScott said, centers of economic activity generate money. No real surprise there.

I don't think it is the different between high and low tax states, I've lived in both. What I look for is EFFICIENT spending of tax dollars, with a minimum of waste and graft so the populance gets the most bang for their bucks.

How many of those states have top tier higher education institutions?

Bolded the two I know for sure. Maybe Illinois.

Loudon county Virginia has been rated the richest county in the U.S. for the forth year in a row. When I visit my brother there, it's like going to a different world from where I currently live and where I grew up in Arlington county. Of course, you can't hardly find anything worth living in in Arlington anymore for less than half a mil. The house I grew up in was torn down so they could build a Mcmansion on it. It's happening to about one out of 5 houses in my old neighborhood due to proximity to the Metro line.

Everytime I go back to visit, the reality of where the federal tax money has gone to smacks you right in the face. To make it even worse, when I grew up there, there was a high mean income due to all the government and military living there, but now many of the companies, especially defense have moved there headquarters and executives into the area so they don't have to travel so far to drop off their brief cases full of money to the lobbyist and members of congress.

Sticking strictly of the (eight) Ivy League institutions: Add Princeton for NJ, Yale for Conneticut, and two for New York: Cornell and Columbia.

Orange County, one of the most conservative in California was the one to go bankrupt in the 90s.

Voting republican isn't what conservatives make. Orange County is hardly conservative in any true sense of the word.

Yeah but you are surrounded by Okies and have Texans to the south of you. It's like being a urinal mint

Could be worse, he could have New Hampshire above, and Connecticut to the south, That would be like being an elitist masshole.

I live in NYC (and have lived in NJ, CA) and I pray for the day that my kids get married so I can move out of this over priced dirty place. People the COL in NYC is insane.

Rent $3000 a month
Parking $300 a month
NYC Income tax
NYC Sales tax
It costs more money to drive out of NY then from NJ to CA

Housing costs are Crazy

Anyone consider that fancy? 579k!!!! 12k a year in taxes!

This is what that buys in Florida

So cruel. I feel guilty for laughing at it.

And, technically speaking, the term "masshole" is generally reserved for that state's drivers. Think the courtesy of a Washington, DC or Memphis driver combined with a florid face and indecipherable accent.

Hey, none of that. We're not supposed to talk about cost of living. Living in a densely populated urban area is exactly the same cost as living in rural Alabama. Everyone knows this.

Parking $300 a month
This is surprisingly cheap. My metro area is about 1/14 the population and it costs $300 here as well.

Now research which states are likely to be bankrupt in the very near future and cross-reference them. It's a short list so it shouldn't be a big deal. Feel free to then give us any opinions you may form from that information.

So true. Conservatives today are not social conservatives like Edmund Burke or economic conservatives like Adam Smith but instead do whatever is necessary to preserve the mansions on the hills from the rabble of the slums below.

I won't comment on the 'quality' of your theory.

But I will point out the facts your theory is based upon are wrong.

Connecticut's highest rate is 6.5%; that's hardly considered a high rate.

Maryland's top rate is the same as CT's.

Virgina's top rate is just 5.75%

Mass is just 5.3%

Illinois' top rate is only 3%.

Half the states in your list don't even have what can be considered high tax rates.

I suppose I could list the numerous states with higher taxes and ask that you explain how come they don't have rich people living there etc (under your theory), but I won't.
