Each individual of the society has a right to be protected by it in the enjoyment of his life, liberty, and property, according to standing laws. He is obliged, consequently, to contribute his share to the expense of this protection; and to give his personal service, or an equivalent, when necessary. But no part of the property of any individual can, with justice, be taken from him, or applied to public uses, without his own consent, or that of the representative body of the people. In fine, the people of this commonwealth are not controllable by any other laws than those to which their constitutional representative body have given their consent.
-John Adams

Obama will have doubled our national debt by the time he leaves office. Yes we are all Americans but not all of us are equal in terms of being self sufficient. In brief ( because I am typing on a crowded bus on an iPad)... Welfare payments by the government are a safety net I do not want to see gone.... Yet I do not want people accepting this circumstance as a way of life. It makes us weaker as a country.

Reagan tripled it during his time in office, So Obama won't be as bad as Reagan's was.

well when you put it that way... I guess everything obama does is excused because Reagan took the national debt from $700 billion to $2 trillion.

I just love the expectations of quality leadership that emanates from these forums.

The Tea Party supports the US Constitution. You love to spread lies about them. They aren't ultra right wing or anti-government. They believe in small government that is restrained by the Constitution.

The fundamentalists are the ones who keep insisting that spending more money and borrowing from China are the solution.

Not really they don't. They support the parts of the constitution that support their world view. Any parts that don't will be ignored and not mentioned at all. That's even assuming tea party supporters have read it. It is even more likely that they have only read the portions that support their view.

They are no different than Christians that selectively support the bible to support their existing views rather than using the bible to change their views.

Hey Constituents! We just had a little Tea Party and threw $24 billion of your taxpayer money overboard!

Only a fucked up government could shut down for 2 weeks or so and piss away 24 billion. Right there is the problem with government. To start with, these employees that were furloughed shouldn't get back pay. If you are going to pay them, they should have been doing their job. Whats the point of furloughing them...So fucked up is this government, but you got tards on both sides of the aisle that don't give two shits about this country.

Yes, punish the people who aren't at fault.

Not paying someone for work they didn't do isn't punishment. Punishing people that weren't at fault is what the asshole Obama did when he prevented veterans and other citizens from seeing their National Parks and Monuments.

That is the symptom of the underlying cause. Taxes need to go up on the highest earners and spending needs to go down in a sensible manner. Anyone raising taxes takes a hit at the polls and anyone enacting spending cuts takes a hit at the polls. People doing the right things lose at the polls. So now lawmakers have to create these crises to get the changes the country actually needs and still be able to say they didn't vote for them.

And above all else, anyone who has the audacity to tell the American people "you are wrong" loses at the polls, even if the people are demonstrably wrong. People don't necessarily understand the ACA or the shutdown or the debt ceiling debates, but they think they're informed because they've seen news clips on Fox or CNN, and dammit, that's good enough. You can't tell these people they're wrong because no one wants to feel stupid, and so politicians bend over backwards trying to kowtow to ignorance because standing up to your constituent base and telling them they are ignorant is political suicide. You have people cheering all over for the country nearly going into economic collapse because, hey, our side is winning! It is insane. Democracy no longer works because the people have too much access to misinformation to make informed decisions and no one in a position of power is willing to correct them.

We get the government we deserve. We've elected one that is willing to destroy America as an economic superpower as long as they can keep cashing a check. And barring violent revolution or the complete collapse of America, it will never change. But on the plus side, we'll have shiny new Xboxes and PlayStations to sate us. Global economic policy is stupid; I'm gonna go play Madden.

The problem is more with the two parties and their monopoly of the government. What needs to happen is to desolve those two parties, and just vote on the people for who they are. I know that will never happen. I view this two party system that is currently in place as the reason for the downfall of the country. They are doing more damage to this country than any terrorist could ever do.

This would never work. Remember what I said about the ignorance of the average voter? How the hell are these people going to know which candidate is a true patriot and which is a cheese-eating terrorist if they don't have a little letter next to their name? American voters, by and large, don't learn about policy or candidates, they figure out which party they think they align with and proceed to vote a straight party ticket forever. The two party system can never die, even though neither party represents what most Americans want any more. The convenience of it is irreplaceable.
