The Royal Tenenbaums: do not see this movie.

Just got back. I'll first say that the movie was original with an allstar cast of actors and of course your mileage may vary. I'm sure some people enjoy this movie...but this person wasn't in the theater with me tonight.

You know when you see a really bad movie and people start leaving? There were about 50 people who saw this tonight and a total of 8 people left the theater.

It starts off interestingly and one can't help but think "perhaps this will be a really really good movie"...as time goes on one continues to hope, but that hope is shot when, God willing, the movie finally ends and we can leave. I should have done the same but alas I was willing to stick it out. The movie goes nowhere. Although each of these skilled actors/actresses plays a very interesting character the plot does nothing with them. This is not one of those movies that has no plot but is still kick-butt just because of the characters and certain scenes (such as trainspotting). It's a tired movie and I can truthfully say that the majority of moviegoers will feel dissapointed with it.

It's a rental at best, and it's the sort of rental that many people would just go "blah" and stop it half way through as they become convinced that there is no point to the movie.

Some parts I laughed. Most parts I didn't. It fails in it's attempts to be a comedy and it fails to make one take it seriously. Overall don't bother. 5/10 score.

I saw that and great expectations is a better movie. Like I said SOME People will like it but I really did not and I gave it a thorough chance, and neither did most of the people in the theater. I was belittling it as soon as I got out (I hate people who do that but I had too) and the couple who got out in front of me were knowingly chuckling at my words. How many movies with 50 people have 8 who leave the damn movie? If my words mean nothing that must at the least.

I enjoyed it very much, and most of the folks in the theater (in Seattle) seemed to feel the same way. I can see how it would be a polarizing film since it is definitely odd, but I liked it and I do not agree that any individual "can truthfully say that the majority of moviegoers will feel dissapointed with it" - keep in mind it has a very high 8.6/10 average rating at IMDB. Gene Hackman was wonderful as always, and those of us with a quirky sense of humor are sure to enjoy it.

I saw this movie and I didn't think it was that bad. A little random, but funny nonetheless. Gene Hackman got a Golden Globe nomination for his performance.

He is a top-notch actor, but a nomination for golden globe doesn't mean the movie is any good

I found it hilarious from start to finish. I found nearly all of the performances (especially Gene Hackman, the always-funny Bill Murray and the Wilson brothers) were very good and I generally thought it was very cleverly written and witty.

This is one of the better movies of the year. It definitely does assume a lot of the audience, particularly a certain level of intelligence. Not to say that someone who doesn't like it is not intelligent.

From Rottentomatoes.com that tabulates reviews of movies and such:

Reviews counted: 91
Fresh: 72 Rotten: 19

I agree!! Very good movie.

People just can't appreciate witty subtle humour. Everything has to be over the top. I guess that in this day, the minds of the masses are so watered down that unless a comedy has poop humor, it's not funny. :frown:

GO SEE THIS MOVIE and rent Rushmore too

I resent you questioning my intelligence and mass-like mind. I didn't like the movie; it doesn't mean I think Rushour 2 has any redeeming qualities either (though I imagine it's a more entertaining movie). And in regards to Rushmore god that was a boring, boring movie. Boring.

Man, I loved this movie!

I love eccentric movies such as The Royal Tenenbaums, and I highly anticipated seeing it when I found out Wes Anderson (sp?) was behind it. I loved Bottle Rocket, and Rushmore, so I figured this would be a good one as well.

As others have noted, it's not a movie with mass appeal. A movie with Adam Sandler gets lots of laughs from lots of people, but not me. Conversely, a movie like The Royal Tenenbaums, Rushmore, etc. doesn't get a laugh from everyone, but from those it does, it's a great thing

Id rather be nailed to a wall and have a big rig filled with gasoline jacknife in front of me and burst into flame, than see this movie again.

Skoord, my man, what say you?!

I find myself laughing still when thinking of certain points in Rushmore. Definitely one of my all-time favorite comedies.

Anyway like I said some parts were funny! It's not an awful movie. It's just not a very good one IMO. Clearly some people here liked it but I think that one would do well before going to see this that it's not the sort of movie everyone likes.

Boy, you are the ONLY person I have ever heard from who did not like Rushmore, which to me offered many of the strengths of The Royal Tenenbaums with none of its minor flaws. I can't imagine why you even went to see The Royal Tenenbaums, which after all shares its writers, director, and much of its cast with Rushmore. I thought Rushmore was one of the most clever, refreshingly different films I have seen in years. I guess there is just no accounting for taste, which is one reason I doubt I would have started a thread like this in the first place if I did not like a particular movie.

I was the same way. It was highly recommended so I checked it out and a few parts were really funny, but overall I just felt sorry for the guy in the movie and it was semi-hard to even finish.

I'm not trying to insult those who didn't like this movie, but I absolutely agree w/ you. I can't sit still during hardcore action movies or slap-stick comedies, but I'll watch movies like Bottle Rocket, Rushmore, and The Royal Tenenbaums time and time again.

To each their own I suppose...

Skoorb,

I meant that as a generalization, not directed specifically at you. It was more of a rant about the types of movies being made these days. Although, I do like the occassional mindless comedy

I actually thought the movie was quite good, but I can definitely see why a lot of people wouldn't like it. A lot of my friends hated the movie. Quite a few people in the movie theatre just left shaking their heads after the movie was done as well. Some of the humor in the movie just doesn't do it for some people style wise. Then again, I was one of my few friends that liked rushmore too................

And yes, I did like Rush Hour 2.
