Well, I too see it as AMD's "1660ti beater". On a (1-day?)sale at BestBuy.com, I snagged one for ~$290 (+tax). A little more than I paid for each of my two GTX 1660 ti MSI Ventus cards (~$270 and $210), but by the TPU charts, it should be faster, at least in gaming. I don't know if it will cut it for 4K gaming, and I really hope that they have the driver and fan-curve issues sorted out by now. I intend to use it for mining, initially, we'll see how loud that blower gets during mining...

The one thing AMD need to change for 5500/5600's is the terrible reference cooler. The reason that reference 5700 is so cheap is because no one wants it because of the cooler.

Due to the regular 5700's performance level/BIOS gimp to frequency means that the reference cooler performans relatively well on it.

Now if you decide to flash its BIOS to an XT one, then AiB cooling will be essential. But for people who just buy the card the let it do its thing, the reference 5700 is a great buy for under $300.

Did a bit of digging to find this thread. Wish there was more pressure from news outlets about the high gpu prices. I've been waiting to upgrade my 1060 6GB. Still unwilling to pull the trigger on a new GPU. Still running 1080p monitors anyhow.

Sitting currently on a 3gb 1060 i picked up locally yesterday. Add a 160 core/400 memory oc which is mild for this card and its beating all expectations. Runs BF4 maxed 60+ constant at 1080p and i have nearly all the settings maxed in GTA V minus high grass and no msaa and its hanging over 60fps minimum. GTA V with my current settings uses like 2800mb vram so it just feels like a perfect 1080p card.

Had a 2070 and sold the 2070 as it was just overkill for 1080p as the 4k monitor i had paired with it just broke. I play mainly older stuff after being disappointed with more recent titles so maybe that's why i feel content with the 1060 at a lowly 1080p resolution. Others would obviously avoid a 3gb gpu in 2019.

Might save up next year for a new 2/4k monitor and perhaps a possible new top tier gpu if its out late next year. Maybe go for a cheap used 2080 super if the next gen stuff costs a new born and a arm? For now i will stick with my $120 gpu and be content.

Man, I'm lucky to be near a MicroCenter. Reference PowerColor 5700 for $280, reference Powercolor 5700XT for $322. Probably gonna snag a 5700.

I wouldn't ordinarily buy a PowerColor card, but since they are reference, and therefore should all be built the same to the same component standards, and given the low price of the XT variant, I think that I would prefer that one.

Speaking as someone that just installed an RX 5700 XFX reference model yesterday, that I got at BestBuy during their one-day-sale for ~$290 (+tax). The 5700XT was ~$360, which was out of my budget.

I know that people have dogged the reference cooler, especially on the XT model, but on the vanilla RX 5700 reference, I can't really even hear it, even while mining ETH.

Newegg has an Asus reference RX 5700 8GB GDDR6 model, for $359.99 - $60 promo code - $20 MIR = $279.99 (+tax).

Wait, so the 5700s can unlock into 5700 XTs?

Haven't heard of it before you asked, but hey, there it is.

Hmm, that is pretty awesome. Apparently, no shaders/cus are unlocked, but it doesn't really matter, similar as with vega 56 => vega 64 flashes.

I believe it still doesn't hit XT levels. Interestingly the reference 5700 fan curve is same as XT, so from a cooling standpoint, both reference cards have similar noise levels, though the 5700 runs much cooler - with the flash, IIRC, the 5700 temps go right up to at or near XT levels, slightly lower performance.

I just want a card that can handle 4k at a reasonable price. my 1080 barely cuts it at 1440p. I'd like to get a WQHD or 4k monitor but there has been so little progress on price/performance above midrange cards.

Sell off the 1080 and grab a 1080ti? Not the best idea of course but makes a world more sense over dropping $1100+ on a 2080ti or waiting who knows how long and hoping for a cheaper 2080ti performance card. The 11gb of vram at least on the 1080ti will ensure you could hold out as long as possible till something reasonable comes about to replace it.

I am wanting to go back to 2k and the idea of a 2080 Super or 1080ti certainly is nagging at me. My money is tied up till March. I would like to think something concrete with Ampere will show up at that time but i got my doubts. I guess i could sit at 1080p on a 3gb 1060 into late next year if anything did.

I'm also greatly annoyed that the best low-end card you can get still is the GT 1030.
I've been considering upgrading my GT 610 (Fermi) in my HTPC since I was forced to get a 4k TV, because the old one broke, and the GT 610 has given signs of EOL too, but the only models are five year old GT 710 (Kepler) and the two year old GT 1030 (Pascal), which is quite damn expensive for just HTPC purposes and too weak to motivate getting for playing games.

And I'm not that keen on getting a new HTPC either just because the low-end market is crap

There are frequent sales of RX570 for $109 (sometimes lower). How do you define low-end? And why wouldn't a 3400G work? I guess I get it, if you have a 2990WX or something and don't really need the GPU performance, but if you're spending almost 4 figures for a CPU, what's a hundred extra bucks for an RX570 or 1650?

Back at 1440p and well after much debate i settled on a used 1080ti. Plows through BF5 and my other games nearly or completely maxed out like no ones business. I called myself crazy when i even considered the idea of getting a 2080 Super. I could have afforded it too till i realized RT performance will mostly tank at 1440p anyways. Didn't make sense for me to spend a extra $270 before tax on the 2080 Super.

Between the price, the amount of vram and given performance the 1080ti may have been the smartest dang gpu purchase i made ever . I came close to pulling the trigger on a 2080 Super. Its possible the 1080ti could tank before a optimized game could take advantage of the 11gb of vram. My guess i got until 2021 if the next gen consoles push the envelope.
