Stop discrediting kids today. Have you even taken a new SAT recently? They aren't easy and we are studying much harder for them than any prior generation did. Almost all of my friends took prep classes and have a stack of books to assist them on the test.

I'm tired of having to listen to all of the past generations say we are lazy. AP classes are at an all time high and making college is harder than ever.

wtf?
SAT wasn't hard, I took my 4 years ago.

It hasn't been that long.

Didn't study for it at all, actually I was about 20 minutes late for my ACT ~_~

took it 5 years ago, 1370. 770 math, 600 vocab. Never bothered taking those classes or reading them books. Probably should've in retrospect, but it all doesn't matter now.

I cant actually say thats entirely true. Its a half truth at best. AP Classes may be at an all time high, but only 32% of high school graduates are academically ready to go to college, meaning not needing to take remedial math or english courses after graduation. Our generation is not at fault, we arent the ones who control public policy. Education quality has been on a decline since the late 1970s.

It was so bad that in 1993 the GED standards were lowered because of a study in 1989 where over 50% of high school seniors involved in the study flunked it. Granted the GED standards were raised marginally in 1997 and again in 2002, but those standards are still less than standards which the seniors in the study flunked.

I took it twice, got a 1410 then a 1520 (800 M, 720 V). I took a class before the first test, and did nothing before the second (well, I skimmed a prep book the night before).

Its no fault of our generation, we arent the ones who control public policy. Education has been on a decline since the late 1970s.

Although I'm not going to disagree with you, despite being part of the supposedly dumber generation, you have to realize that it's not the fault of kids being dumb entirely (if these statistics are valid). I've had a bunch of very, very poor teachers throughout the years, and I'm in what is supposedly a pretty good academic school (better-than-average public school).

Like I said our generation isnt in control of public policy, and the education system has been decling since the late 1970s.

Education is what one makes of it. Which isnt much for most of our generation. Anyone that doesnt have a handicap can take remedial courses and go on and do well, if they have the dedication. Most of our generation lacks this dedication and motivation, and wants instant gratification.

No it doesn't. The SATs are not a true sign of intelligence or learning capacity. It measures what you have learned, not what you are capable of learning. It doesnt factor in outside circumstances. People that do poorly(sub1000) can still do quite well in college. Even better than the avg college graduate's GPA of 2.75. If one applies themselves and has the support, even a highschool dropout can match the avg college grad GPA. Do many? No. Do many highschool grads? Relatively speaking, no. But its entirely possible, and there should be alot more support for students that don't feel well. The pressures of doing well, and then not doing well takes a pretty heavy toll.

Its all about ones desire, dedication, and motivation.

First time - 7th grade (don't ask - it was some special program to see where we compared with high school seniors) - 580M 320V

Second Time (1988) - 740M 420V

Third Time (1989) - 740M 510V

Scores were always lopsided. Go figure. While I use math to analyse sales information and (try to) predict future sales. I use the English more in my everyday job. Goes to show that the SAT is only a guage of how well you take a test. Not a test of knowledge.

For the youngsters on ATOT.... The SAT's have been curved upward since then. His 1300 equals a higher score today.

I had a 780 on the math part, I forget the exact score on the English. I was soooo pissed because I made a couple of stupid mistakes and realized them when walking out - each of them was on problems like "which of the following is never true?" I'd eliminate 3 of the choices, but an asterisk next to the question to go back to it later... and at the end of the exam, I solved every one of them. Unfortunately, I put for my answer the last one I eliminated, rather than the one remaining.
Good news! I got 1250 back in 1987.

Edit to add: I was hung over like crazy that morning, too. My proctor was my Calc teacher, he had to wake me up twice.

Hmmm

http://www.pisd.org/rating/satscores.htm

Here is a sampling of changes made in recent years:

The vocabulary section is shorter
Students are allowed to use calculators
There is more time allowed to complete the test
The scoring was "re-centered" in 1996 resulting in an artificial, 100 point leap in average scores nationwide.

So...I'm more like a 1400? Interesting.
