the old data center I used to work at was frightening... my first day on the job, some guy lost a finger
it was very, very poorly designed on both sides (my company was renting space, and we surely overloaded the racks beyond what the facility was designed to cool, but now that I'm more experienced, looking back I can clearly see that the facility itself had a poor cooling strategy)
since everything was cooled so poorly and everything was a degree away from overheating, the facility -- I think this was Qwest -- installed these giant industrial standing fans along every row. common sense would dictate turning off the fan prior to moving it, but I guess this employee didn't even think about it... his finger slipped through the fan grate, and bye bye finger.
I was in that rack area later that day and there were still some spots of blood on the floor :\
this facility was also in the ghetto and I worked a night shift, so there were frequent run-ins with crack addicts. I don't know anyone who worked there who didn't have their car broken into at least once.
