One common pitfall? Parents give the kids thier own TV in the kids room, usually with full cable on it... Then you have no idea what your kid is watching, and no chance to talk to them about it.

I'd love to think that this is all media hype but I have a friend who works with jr highers locally, in Sacramento, and he was telling me just about the same thing.

Yessir. That is the truest thing I've heard/read today. My second job is tourism-related, so I get to see thousands of people a night (literally) I can't BELIEVE the way some of these parents let their daughters dress! :Q (I'm focusing on girls b/c that's where the "sex" comes in...young boys today just dress like complete slobs.)

I mean, skin-tight jeans, little tiny "baby T's" that barely cover a developing chest, let alone a belly! :Q I feel like tapping someone on the shoulder and saying "excuse me, buddy, but do you realize your daughter is dressed like a cheap ho at a Rave Nightclub, and grown men are staring at her like a piece of meat?"

But I can't do that. Not politically correct. I must admit; sometimes my eye will be caught by/drawn to "some scantily-clad chick" and then as she gets closer, I realize she's about 14 years old. Holy crap, go to jail, directly to jail, do not pass go, do not collect $200.

I hate to say this, but parents let their daughters dress this way, and then they wonder why they got pulled into a van full of guys as she was walking down the street. I mean, CMON parents, monitor your childrens' behavior; they'll grow up to be better adults.

Most of that article is about little girls dressing like models, etc. I'm not saying that no middle schoolers have sex, but parents read articles like that and think that the kids who don't have sex by 14 are the exception rather than the rule. I remeber my mom would always worry when she read studies about high school students and sex or drugs or violence....

to add to this, i remember taking those polls in jr high and high school, and we always lied through our teeth. We would say we have had sex 10+ times this month, etc. Nothing is serious in middle school. Hell, nothing is serious in college

These kids make me sick. I didn't even touch a boob until I was 18! Same with people in high school. Never got anywhere in high school either (although that's probably my fault). Junior High kids should not be having sex.

My wife said her high school had a somewhat strict dress code and a pda rule which if you show any Public Displays of Affection (yes even hugging) you got detention. Her youngest brother is a senior there and he says they are getting super strict about everything. Seems like things have gotten into a catch-22.
The school gets stricter, the students rebel, the school gets even more strict, and so on. I get the impression her youngest brother is going to go through shock finding out how relaxed and different college is compared to the strictness of high school (and I guess middle school now too...)

As rule, if you cant shave you shouldnt have sex. But really, at that age you are not fully devolped. Its just not right for that to be happening. Shoot i got a 14year old little sister who is far from unattractive. Do I have to be looking out for her 110% of the time now? I do not want some little punk to be going around taking advantage of her because she knows no better. No thats not ok. Friggin kids and their music and TV

I think that parents need to explain to their children that all this crap they hear on the radio and see on TV is not necessarily the truth. When the guy on the radio is talking about banging this bi*ch and slapping that bi*ch, kids are going to think thats the truth. And girls are going to hear Britney Spears saying I'm your slave and think they are supposed to be like that. Not to mention the crap they see on TV and in movies. I could think of 10 recent movies I would never let my kids see because of sexual content. Parents need to start being involved in their childrens lives. It's not the media's responsibility to take care of people's children.
