That is what I figured. Mine does not let me play it though as I get a popup box after hitting play saying I need an original copy installed :confused

That's weird. This promo is definitely for the full game, you should not need anything else in order to play it. Maybe try repairing the installation? (right-click on the game in origin, repair)

If that doesn't work, Origin has built in support chat.

As you may know, EA released a full collection of our beloved Sims 2 and decided to give it away free to anyone who had Sims 2 registered in their Origin account... then because of the high demand, they decided to give it to anyone who had an Origin account. What they didn't tell anyone was that they had implemented SecuROM into the mix.

Edit: Actually looks like it's the original Securom from when it was first released, not some new stuff. They forgot to take it out..

The problem is DRM on top of DRM.
Origin is DRM, and securom is DRM that is overly bad.

There is no excuse for having double DRM be it on Origin, or Steam, or Uplay.

EA won't as they are no longer supporting or updating the game. Also keep in mind it's the digital-only version of SecuROM and not the disc version too.
