I am guessing it will be Rio when all is said and done.

Rio has huge crime problems, the favelas where the poor live are no-go zones for the most part. Sao Paulo has more of them but in Rio the slums are on the hills to avoid the flooding problems and are thus very apparent even to tourists.

Though putting on an Olympics is very expensive it will be an unbeatable showcase for what I think is one of the nicest, craziest places on Earth. If they manage to do this right and get positive cash flow the city will really benefit from the expected upgrades to infrastructure.

The Brazilians are sports fanatics and I mean FANATICS, so I would expect them to make this one of the best of the modern Olympics in terms of the general population pitching in, just like the whole populace participates in Carnaval.

Chicago & Tokyo Out!

Do you think it cost more or less than Bush traveling to and from (mostly to) his ranch in Crawford?

At least Obama was trying to accomplish something for the country with his trip. Oh that's right, Bush accomplished clearing out all the brush around his ranch.

Maybe he should work on passing bills here with his own party instead. Don't bother bashing Bush.. that 8 year nightmare is over thankfully and anyone who misses him isn't going to be convinced otherwise so why bother with the comparison.

I hardly think this a smack down. Lots of people in Chicago worked very hard to bring in the games, the odds were not great because many others also applied, and at the end of the day Chicago did not win. And when the next application process comes along, Chicago can use that same blueprint and enhance it some, and maybe have better luck next time.

Feel better sour grapes or not in terms of the Olympics are not profitable, we still should credit the people who did try to bring the games to Chicago. And also note many others in other cities worked as hard and did not win also.

Is there any prestige left in the Olympics that make this a big deal? With all the doping, bribes, and crooked judges. Who gives a shit?

I was merely trying to point out the difference between President Obama taking a 1 day trip to try and bring the Olympics to the U.S. and the former president taking something close to 500 days off for his personal needs.

What bills are currently waiting for him to sign into law that should exclude this trip?

Ah yes, the "Bu...Bu...But Bush!" argument. I was wondering when that would appear and I'd be lying if I said I was surprised it was Dave McOwned that would be the one to say it.

Ouch, I read on another site that Chicago was expected to be a finalist and this was considered one of the biggest upsets in Olympic voting history.

We should blame GWB.

Check page 2. Dave McOwned already is.

Edit: I am not the OP. GT is. Mega time warping up in here!

On one hand, I do think it is funny because you could tell that the media, among other Obama fans, thought it was a slam dunk, done deal because he went over to lobby for them. Guess they were wrong!

Politics aside though, I was pulling for Chicago to get them as my state (Indiana) stood to gain quite a bit from the games as well.

Yes, let's all celebrate the United States losing the Olympics because it makes Obama look bad.

Pelé! Pelé! Pelé!

Beckham got nothing on the old man!

From Wiki -

Pelé's most beautiful goal was scored at Rua Javari stadium on a Campeonato Paulista match against São Paulo rivals Juventus on 2 August 1959. As there is no video footage of this match, Pelé asked that a computer animation be made of this specific goal.

In March 1961, Pelé scored the gol de placa (goal worthy of a plaque), a goal against Fluminense at the Maracanã which was regarded as so spectacular that a plaque was commissioned with a dedication to the most beautiful goal in the history of the Maracanã.

In 1967, the two factions involved in the Nigerian Civil War agreed to a 48-hour ceasefire so they could watch Pelé play an exhibition game in Lagos.

This. I hate the Olympics. The IOC has to be one of the most corrupt organizations in the world. Yeah, I'll watch when there's a big story, like Phelps, and I'll watch the hockey games during the winter olympics, but that's about it.

Which was mostly paid by the Atlanta Braves who turned it into Turner Field for baseball afterwards. Win/win for both groups.

If I were going to go to the Olympics I would rather see them in Rio.

Swimming in Lake Michigan vs doing Copacabana, Ipanema, Aproador? No contest.
